A way to permanently Expand the initial 15 slot inventory

Recommended Posts

Ever since Don't Starve came out of Early access, we have basically had the largest inventory size possible (player + krampus sack can hold 29 items). While this was more then sufficient for Vanilla and ROG, it became progressively harder to manage your inventory with multiple powerful and strong items you want to carry around with you (Like bundle wraps, star caller staffs, etc.). In addition, it basically makes most chest slot items Obsolete, except for backpacks, as you basically give away a 1/3rd to 1/2 of your inventory just to use the item. It's especially noticeable in lategame worlds, where people will often only use the krampus sack as it's one of the few ways to mass haul a decent amount of items at once. DST tried to combat this issue by adding bundle wrap, which while good, mainly feels like a temporary solution rather then a permanent one.

In my opinion, a lot of this just comes from your main inventory being so small. While it's certainty more then enough for early to midgame, it becomes much more of a hinderance lategame to do anything without a backpack. That also made me realize something: if the main inventory size is the problem, why not buff the main inventory?

Of course, achieving this wouldn't be an earlygame or even midgame thing. The inventory is usually more then sufficient until lategame, where being able to expand the main inventory would come in handy.

One example how this could be accomplished (although I would highly advise against it) would be being able to deconstruct a krampus sack for 2-3 new "pocket dimension" items. Upon using this item, you would permanently gain an inventory slot that would be attached to the hotbar, directly above the first slot. You can repeat this process until you gain 15 new slots (or essentially double the inventory). Some general properties that would probably follow with these new slots:

  • The items in these slots would be dropped on the ground when you die.
  • You cannot lose these additional slots in any way, from dying to using the celestial portal (IMO, it would just be way too much of a hassle to redo/remake the 15 slots to where it just wouldn't be fun).
  • As for how the inventory would be managed when picking items up/shift clicking items to or from containers, anything that goes in a special container would be first (like the seed pack-it specifically making sure it picks up seeds in it's slots), then your main inventory, then the "extra" main inventory, then the backpack.
  • Wortox's souls could go in these slots, as it would just be an extension of the main inventory.
  • There would be a toggle to show/hide these inventory slots, similar to how you can show/hide the backpack inventory.
  • Players on console would have the main inventory in the middle, the backpack inventory on the bottom, and the "extra" main inventory on the top.

As a result of this new inventory, I feel like it would help change/adjust some things, mostly for the better:

  • It gives a lategame incentive to wear clothing. With 15 slots you sacrifice a lot just to wear something like a rain coat, but with 30 slots, the penalty of not using a backpack would be far less crushing.
  • It makes backpacks less of the main choice later on. It would still be a very strong choice, just not practically the only choice.
  • It would help increase the items players can carry on bulk trips, such as bringing items to and from base and picking up logs and the like from a cleared forest

Of course, a few issues would arise from this, the main one being how you would get these slots. I mentioned the krampus sack as I feel that's the most believable, but you would need to be in an incredibly lategame scenario to where you would have 5 excess sacks to just deconstruct for those 15 slots, especially when farming the sack is already fairly time consuming, and it wouldn't be realistic in worlds with more then 2-3 players. On the other hand, I'm not sure which boss/event would allow you to gain these slots either, as most don't really have any real reason they would drop an item that would permanently increase your inventory space.

Overall, I think being able to expand the inventory would be a neat concept, especially later on. I'm not sure of any good examples of how that would occur other then deconstructing excess krampus sacks, but I do think it would make for a neat thing for players to strive for, especially ones who like chest slot items that are not backpacks.

Sack+shadow chester/hurtch+bundle wraps+ character inventory

What are you doing to need more slots? Sure, sometime when you are megabasing you need to drop a lot of tools and materials arround but they can stay there meanwhile you build, no need of carrying them

And if you arent building then you dont need slots and, if you do, you can multiply your inventory x4 with bundles and gifts in case you were mass farming something

Is a good suggestion, gives some character progression. Just i dont see it a priority with how inventory has improved since Bundle wraps

Does the word "uncompromising" means something different where you're from, Maxil?

Hmmm?

I though we cant say uncompromising survival sandbox anymore because isnt an excuse to keep things like they are. And less when the word uncompromising is beaten in late game

But i guess is sarcasm and i got baited

I would also say no to this, as I also think inventory management is probably the most relevant skill in the game. I also think it's an underrated downside of some characters that need to carry specific items at all times, and tbh I like making those decisions early game, on what to keep and what to drop :P .
Personally I use body slot items quite a lot despite the high cost of inventory, I feel like some of them are fairly balanced.

It would of course help during late game for bigger projects and I wouldn't say no to it being somehow buffed in very late, but I think buffing inventory is bad for early game

i guess the newest boss what ever it could be could drop something that would be called something like "the knowlege of hoarding" or something like that it is some sort of item it only has 1 use and using it will give the user 5 more extra slots and that forever but a player can only use it once if they try to use another one it will not work so to fix that it needs a secondary use something about items then propably what ever it could be sounds like somthing of a reason to fight it again

Hey uh do me a favor- go right now and play State of Decay 2, load that game up for me okay? Now change the difficulty to Nightmare.

Alright here’s what your left with when you do that: You choose to carry a 6 slot inventory backpack to be light weight and nimble, or you carry a 7-8 slot back pack and become weighed down draining stamina in the process.

You choose do you want to horde a lot of stuff and risk getting torn apart by an undead horde, or trying to only carry what you NEED and be as quiet as possible so you don’t attract a horde.

Inventory Management plays a vital role in ANY Sandbox survival game- this is quite literally why the difference between GTA V and RED DEAD ONLINE is you can only carry so many weapons and ammo on you at once, the rest have to be stored on your horse or in your camp inventory boxes.

GTA V Enhanced Edition needs to take some design choices from RDO and apply it to its game: you have a vehicle, your vehicle has a trunk, freaking use it and stop carrying around everything you can ever possibly need being materialized out of thin air!

My point??? Inventory management is VITAL and when you have 50+ inventory slots it suddenly becomes Less important.

I would personally enjoy a harder mode where maximum inventory is reduced to 6-8 like State of Decay 2, OR at the very least- If your carrying around 3 stacks of 40 rocks it makes a clear impact on your movement speed.

DST is a SURVIVAL SANDBOX GAME.

Some people just want it to be a SANDBOX where you throw survival completely out the window.

Now do keep in mind that I MAIN Wendy, and Also Side Main Willow & Wigfrid and Webber- Their reworks added even MORE items they need to carry around in their inventory to be most effective- And yet I STILL want inventory to be reduced on a harder difficulty setting.

TL:DR- just a basic backpack gives you far more inventory slots then You personally ever NEED I can say this as FACT because I play games like SoD 2 on Nightmare, that doesn’t even count the 9 additional slots you get from Chester, Hutch or Woby.

do you not quite grasp the idea that it is practically impossible to die permanently in the late game?

The only point in the late game where it remains survival is the boss fights, and we already have plenty sufficient inventory for those.

stop ignoring that there is a late game and most of the suggestions to make the game more "confortable" are for this stage of the game

dst isnt just roaming arround without enough materials and food, there is more stages of the game than starving and dying from weather
