What is the use for ...

Recommended Posts

Hi team.

I have been wondering, what is the actual use for:

  • Nuclear reactor - I understand that the main (or only) use for it is to make power from steam but at this point in game most players will already have enough power for all their needs
  • Mutader crops - those crops dive just a slight difference in the way they are used plus it is hard to grow those as they need radioactive environet. Once a player aquires mutated seeds, they should already have a stable source of food.
  • Sweepy - well you know.. who needs this?

Regards

Reactor: nuclear waste, radiation (legit source), big booms.

Mutant crops: way more efficient use of fertilizer, smaller builds. The challenge (?) of providing radiation to grow them.

Sweepy: it's cute. Can go where an autosweeper cannot. Mobile pedestal. Torture?

But most importantly, variety and fun :wilson_blush:

I'll go with cynical "players wanted it so they got it". Reactors and sweepy were requested as such.

With the reactor, it was pretty obvious that most of the people requesting it wanted it because nuclear power is cool. As far as I recall, most requests for sweepy were associated with either regolith cleaning (something it would be terrible at in current implementation) or just "we want robots". Mutant plants seem to be an answer to players wanting radiation to affect living stuff.

There was no need, just want. Maybe the need will be created in next DLC.

Nuclear power allows you to skip other power options. And easily set up a large power plant on other asteroids where you can ship uranium as fuel. As said it's a great source of radiation.

Sweepy isn't all that useful due its very slow speed and capacity but there are some niche applications

The nuclear reactor is mostly another option for power. You can do it at around the same stage of the game as you would be doing petroleum boiling, or basically any other long-term power solution. Try it, its fun!

If you aren't satisfied with feeding a ludicrous amount of duplicants on tiny amounts of crops, its always worth bringing up how insane experiment 52b's appetite can be, and how much proper mutation can help with that.

One of the coolest things about video games is Options. You could totally be old-school and do old-school techniques, or you could do all this new stuff that works just about as well, if not better in some situations! :butterfly:

dropped food in my great hall

The over powered solution for this is to fill your great hall in CO2 so it doesn’t go off. Leave conveyer loader to allow manual drop off and done. Sweepy is not necessary but it’s an option. I personally avoid it. I’m fun at parties lol.

You also need to have subzero temperature great halls for it to work. Unbreathable dining rooms are messy.

It's more efficient to use corner sweepers or pneumatic door separated sweepers.

Practice putting exosuits right outside a Duplicant housing unit. When dupes wake up and are out of the unit they are in their exosuits. When downtime comes by they can use the bathroom, shower and eat.. all with their suits on. But it's also not about just leaving the food on the floor activate the allow manual use on conveyers. In time they will come by and pick up the food. Another thing I've noticed if you limit your Fridges to only 1kg of food they never leave food behind.

I agree with this, and I personally would have liked the devs to focus on bug fixes. Always, always bug fixes.

But I also like that these useless-to-the-end-game items exist, and am glad the devs spent the time to make them. There needs to be a nice balance between creative weirdness and goal oriented needs.

I love to see people in the forum arguing between “I have done all of the math and this is the optimal way to build” vs “I’m going to build this here because it looks cool”. I’m not sure about others, but I always find myself changing between these two opinions depending on my mood. ONI is great because it has that breadth of gameplay.

Nuclear reactor

Absolutely no use/need. We don't need that much power even  in the end game. Solar power with a bit of natural gas or coal power is enough for most of the game.

Mutader crops

It is hard to manage them in the current form. The best food in the game is Berry Sludge and there is no need for any other food unless they add some sort of moral reduction if dupes eat a same food over and over.

Same as rovers and telescope module. Mostly useless.

I have always been a strong advocate for new additions to be part of the gameplay. Rockets are partially working in that regard, but power reactors and mutations are not part of the gameplay yet.

I am eager to see how many players in survival mod have a nuclear power plant. I am pretty sure that KLEI can see the stats. To see if the people asked for it, build one in their gameplays or even play the game.

Wow lol we’re very pessimistic.. but it might just be! I have done like three maps already without even building one because I forget to lol. And I played in sandbox and I didn’t build it. I’m gonna try to actually build one this time….. I’m so lazy lol

The nuclear reactor seems to be made mostly for producing diamonds (for space mining) and for activating the temporal tear for the victory condition. It will both produce tons of radbolts and provide power to sustain the radblot collectors. If nothing else it will be useful for that.

Mutant crops are kinda weird. They don`t usually provide enough benefit to warrant the radiaiton setup and when they do it`s a hussle to get enough seeds. I imagine i could use the more efficient mutations for the resin tree.

I use sweepy everytime i have this dumb idea to move ice around (like when trying ice makers -> icy fans). Dupes will drop melting ice everywhere. Also when using farm tiles on swamp planetoid. There is always some liquids that will end up on the farm blocking it. A sweepy can do mop jobs unlike auto sweepers.
