HowlVoid
Ecological reasons: Sea striders reside within the safe leafy canopy of knobbly trees. Adult sea striders fetch daily meals for new born hatchlings, which would otherwise be eaten by the fish. Sea striders carry their prey in their mouths after injecting them with a paralyzing toxin and deposit them into their nests. The new born striders enter the fish from its mouth and begin nibbling at the soft insides first. All while the prey is still alive. Gameplay reasons: These new spiders are very cute and just great in general. Apart from their ability to "walk on water" they have the same stats as normal spiders. There aren't a lot of sought after foes that wouldn't be quickly downed by a few spitters and nurses (outside the new Crab King cheese). This ability is also tied to the ocean, where as in land they're just regular spiders. There doesn't need to be a gameplay reason to keep them around but it would be nice. Since they would die for webber I don't doubt they would do this kindness for them. Personal reasons: I would honestly like to keep all spiders as different from each other as possible. I'm also a HUGE fan of blue pikmin (so cute when they pick stuff up in the water) in the pikmin franchise; they're my favorite. I kinda expected for them to hang out outside the border of a boat and that that would be the incentive to use them over other spiders. Technical reasons: Not sure how much work would go into this and I know Klei won't go out of their way to implement something outside their schedule. Perhaps the game can give the last spider Webber befriends as the "collector". This "Collector" water strider would be the only spider capable of collecting things to keep the chaos to a minimum. They could do an attack to attach an item to their mouth an then deposit it at Webbers feet. Conversely to reduce the time it takes to collect something, all spiders can be "collectors" but will stop if a threat shows up. Edit: Just realized nurses can't follow them into the water so that's another weakness. A retreating Malbatross would probably kill them away from the nurses. Kelloggs Dogfry
Honestly them fetching things in water is an amazing idea. Kelloggs Dogfry
Yeah I mean gnarwails are mildly ok once a blue moon when you find them, but Webber having access to a crew of collectors sounds perfect, especially assuming the striders don’t already do anything special. While I'm not against this they already set themselves apart by being able to fight mobs on the sea being the first horde friendly mob to do so that already is a very big reason to use them while they're isn't a reason to craft every spider I find every spider type has it's advantages. Hmmm... Should I type out another "buff gnarwails" post? They would still be superior to gnarwails for several reasons even if they had a designated den. Being able to take them on land being and being permanent followers being the biggest ones. Just casual adventuring can bring you items from the shoreline. Webber can also pacify them at key times (shark attack), heal them directly and indirectly, etc. Just overall better synergy. 1 hour ago, Mysterious box said: While I'm not against this they already set themselves apart by being able to fight mobs This is one of my main points. What mobs are worth engaging at sea? Unless you have them chase down a squitter squid for some reason they are actually worse at sea than any spidet because there are no strider nurses. Maybe they can clear out a salt formations biome (who even needs salt past a few salt boxes) but spitters can do that too and from range. Quote on the sea being the first horde friendly mob to do so that already is a very big reason to use them while they're isn't a reason to craft every spider I find every spider type has it's advantages. Well Warriors and dwellers are exactly the same kind of spider. Spitters and nurses tend to be the best combo. I also find cave spiders to be kinda useless because of nurses and burrowing is a dps loss. Warriors and normal spiders still have some use. Giving striders this small passive will give them a technical reason to have them around all the time. Not that I wouldn't use them when ever I could, given how cute they are. Dwellers are useful not because of what they do but because of where they spawn and how many there are. Warriors are good because of of again their availability, high hp, and their leap attack to push past other spiders and catch fleeing mobs for cheap. Cave spiders are the cheapest to make in mass and the higher hp means they're less likely to get 1 shot by stronger enemies and blocking gives them enough time to get healed when mobbed. Shattered spiders are the fastest movers making them ideal to put miner hats on and their aoe attack shines against other hordes. Enough nurses (even just one nurse for general use. Non boss) are better in my opinion. Gets even better late game when you can just place down a bulb and heal your spiders to full all the time. No mob in the game one shots spitters, not even bosses. 2 minutes ago, Mysterious box said: Shattered spiders are the fastest movers making them ideal to put miner hats on and their aoe attack shines against other hordes. Your missing my point the maze has around 40 to 60+ dwellers all packed into a dense spot why bother amassing warriors for the ruins when you can get 30 dwellers for 10 pieces of meat which is enough to kill the guardian without nurses and roll over all other mobs down there. 55 minutes ago, HowlVoid said: Enough nurses (even just one nurse for general use. That may seem viable to you but I rather not spend 2-3 days farming monster meat when I can hide behind a pillar and kill it in one day. Even if you don't cheese it, you can grab a magi and kite it and it will still take less time. Another thing is that Webber doesn't need ruins loot as much as other characters. He can just grab a handful of spitters and nurses and kill important bosses with a hambat. Case in point dwellers are less preferable for what their cousins can already do. Quote Again your missing the point cave spiders aren't about being the best option but the cheapest and easiest option for people for players who want something more durable than a base spider but don't feel like investing in higher tier ones. Cheaper than collecting them in the wild? None of their switcher doodles are efficient. Look no further than a sinkhole and fill your pockets to your hearts content. Then pen them for any number of uses down the line. Nurse spiders are the only exception. Let's get back on topic though, this is about striders after all. My initial review of them is that they don't need to be viable, in a meta sense, anyways. Seems a lot of people agree this would be a nice addition. Or just kill 1 kolaphant again getting 10 meat isn't hard no matter how you slice it using dwellers is the fastest way as I doubt anyone has trouble gathering the 10 meat needed togather 30 dwellers. Dwellers are weaker than warriors but they spawn in a place worth visiting and in much higher numbers than warriors which is my point they have value due to their number and location. Also no character needs ruins gear so that is a weird point. 13 minutes ago, HowlVoid said: Cheaper than collecting them in the wild? None of their switcher doodles are efficient. My point is that it's useful for casual players who don't want to spend the day doing the trap method something most of them don't even know about rocks are very abundant even more so than stone fruit so yes it is useful and cheap for less knowledgeable players and no as I said it isn't the best way to build a army. A easier comparison is the spear vs the hambat yes the hambat is superior but to a less skilled player the spear is more ideal for ease of access. Also again I said the water spider idea wasn't bad I was just saying that they already set themselves apart from the others in a good way. No, that's not how it works. Any meat you take from above ground has a good chance of spoiling before you find the labyrinth early game. Just stand behind a pillar and kill the guardian. Not sure why you're also dismissing my alternatives that require 0 meat investment? Just kite it. Quote Also no character needs ruins gear so that is a weird point. Not sure if you're skimming what I'm writing but I said they need it less, not that other characters need it. Essentially, it is less practical for Webber to seek it out when nurses and spitters can substitute the power of ruins gear. That is something I consider in my own personal games which is why I mentioned it. Quote My point is that it's useful for casual players who don't want to spend the day doing the trap method something most of them don't even know You're only making that point now, you did not mention "casual players" until now. I would recommend "casual players" to use the trap method if they don't know about it. Seems every time we have a conversation you bring up the "poor clueless new players" to back up your claims. Not sure why, I guess you think it somehow makes you seem more correct when you propose methods that have shortcuts. I didn't think I needed to specifically use the words casual I assumed it was implied at first but let me ask you this plenty of people on public servers use torches instead of lanterns or miner hats the latter is clearly better but why do you think that is? Also unless a player would check the forums, wiki, or specific content creators how would they know about the duping method with traps your speaking as if every player who plays webber does and immediately knows that traps can dupe spiders feel free to explain how this point is invalid tho. 1 hour ago, HowlVoid said: Not sure if you're skimming what I'm writing but I said they need it less, not that other characters need it.
