I want my applied horticulture back.

Recommended Posts

Wicker is over powered, if there's any hope of her getting a rework and becoming a more compelling character to play as, she NEEDS a nerf.

She needs more, even, beyond just Applied Horticulture.

And it just makes me really upset how negatively people reacted, feels like Klei was testing the water to see how people would react to a Wicker nerf and they got bitten by angry, irrational piranhas.

You are reasonable. I'll chat with you.

1. That is true, but dst community always fail to recognize what is right and what is completely incorrect. Just look at all these people arguing with me. "it's hard to win an argument with a smart person, but it's damn near impossible to win an argument with a stupid person". Not to offend anyone, but this quote goes really well to describe this community, since noobs always fail to recognize that they are indeed noobs. And they never recognize an actual pro.

I wanted to distinguish myself to klei (I'm new to forums, they read those posts, right?) So that they wouldn't disregard me. Not that I have much faith in them.

2. Berry bushes will grow back on their own in 2 days. That's good enough to feed the whole server. Food isn't an issue in the first place, so why even bother.

3. It did not lost a lot of utility, that would be the living logs one.

This book became useless. I was a bit harsh on it and skipped the fact that it has a single minor questionable usage that is starting off your mega farms. My bad, not a complete trash, can still be used for a really bad food source once and never again.

But you understand that you distinguished yourself in the negative direction, right? If your goal was to gain respect, you kinda did the opposite. Respect's a two-way street.

Unless it's raining, berry bushes grow in 3-5 days though. Some players do struggle with hunger, and the more people on a server, the less food there is to go around. I did some math to help you see the difference between a common (not even the most efficient) crop farm and a berry bush farm down below. That said, if food isn't even an issue for you in the first place, then why do you take issue with the food nerfs?

Spoiler

Berry bushes take 4 days to grow a berry on average. A full official server would need 600 hunger's worth (8 ppl * 75 hunger per person per day) of berries per day, or 2400 hunger over 4 days (and that's ignoring the dedicated servers with around double the players). Since the berry bushes need to be fertilized every 4 harvests on average, you'll have to sacrifice a quarter of your harvest for rot to fertilize the bushes, meaning you actually only profit 3/4 of a berry every time you pick from the bush. Assuming every gobbler (spawns every 10 harvests) happens to spawn in daytime for you to kill (which realistically won't happen since you'll have to do some dusk/night harvesting), that means every berry bush harvest is 3/4 of a berry + 1/5 of a drumstick = 9.53 hunger. Let's even assume every single berry/drumstick will be used for meatballs so we can multiply the hunger value by about 1.5 (if you multiply the hunger of 3 berries and a drumstick by 1.5, you get close to 62.5), so now the hunger per harvest is 14.3. 2400 hunger needed / 14.3 hunger per bush = 168 berry-bush farm needed to sustain a full official server (with a bunch of assumptions in favor of the berry farm). This is obviously an unrealistically large berry bush farm, which goes to show how weak a berry farm actually is without the old horticulture.

Let's compare that to a common giant-crop potato-tomato farm. Growing giant crops takes 2.5 days, or 20 minutes, of light, so the amount of days will vary. The shortest day possible has 5 minutes of daylight, so 4 days is the max amount of time for a giant crop to grow possible (an assumption against the crop farm). A giant crop gives 2.75 crops and 2.25 crop seeds, and since you need a seed to replant, the profit hunger-wise is 2.75 crops + 1.25 crop seeds (which btw gives a surprising amount of hunger, the same as a berry). 1 giant potato = 80.47 hunger, and 1 giant tomato = 46.09 hunger (let's even assume that you won't put the tomatoes in the crockpot), and since they come in pairs, the two crops together = 126.56 hunger. 2400 hunger needed / 126.56 hunger per 2 crops = 18.96 crop pairs = 38 giant potatoes and tomatoes (with assumptions against this farm). That's a little less than 5 farm plots, which is very manageable, especially if you have a one-man band. Again, this isn't even an optimal crop farm compared to dragonfruit-tomato farms in spring/summer and potato-pumpkin-asparagus farms in winter.

Living logs are pretty abundant endgame without wormwood. Have you tried using bearger to mow down trees?

I'll let you know when I'll need validation from forum dwellers.

You know I meant it as a general life advice, not forum advice, but you do you I guess.

Kinda hard to image you'd act any less entitled somewhere else though

What, you think because I'm better at a video game I act entitled in real life as well?

Lmao, Klei did not test anything. They went in with the nerf without even thinking past the farms. And then the community reacted, except all they can say is "wtf we can't lureplant farm grass with this new book". So klei split applied horticulture into 2 books. One is useless and the other one is too expensive to be flexible.
