Yeah they're open when you are in distance but basalt gives no pathfinding feature for mobs unlike walls so as long you place a bait toward the basalt you can trap a Bearger inside forever. But with how infrequently it's used on pubs I would bet you could trick people by handing it to them and telling them to use it on themself.
