Save the Ocean Initiative

Recommended Posts

It’s not a secret that almost everybody likes the new content added with The Return of Them, you can now sail, battle with new mobs, build more structures and overall play the game with more freedom since the jump mechanic and boats are a thing right now,but there’s one little detail that I don’t like about the new updates, and it has to do with the ocean.

When I first jumped into my boat and started sailing,I was impressed by how beautiful the ocean was,the different colors in it,the new bird, kelps, sometimes a white log appeared in the distance, and of course, the lunar island was absolutely fantastic. But now my oceans are literally infested with twigs, grass, rots, and boat parts that I think came from my last sinked boat,I REALLY don’t like how the ocean looks right now,It’s starting to look like the real life ocean (please Klei don’t add plastic bottles into dst).
And the fact that we cannot retrieve this items in the distance with a fishing rod bothers me too, sometimes there’s a rot or a white log very near the shore and you cannot pick it with any tools you have.

So I thought at something :
•Itens like grass, rot and twigs should disappear after the player don’t return to that certain area for 5 days.
•Harvested kelps would not float on water for more than 2 days.
•Seeds should be consumed by some mob offscreen or onscreen.
•Wrecked boat parts should be harvested and turned into logs or just sink as well.
•Adding coral to the games as a environmental bioindicator if the water is clear or not.

•Fishing rods should be able to retrieve an item that near to the player but not in the water.

Just to be clear I’m not a hardcore player or a game designer,I just think it would be a nice change if this little thing could be fixed in the future, maybe there’s people who don’t even bother with this kind of situation, but sometimes it makes me a little anxious to see a beautiful ocean crowded with trash.

I agree with this. I'm not taking the time to paddle up to some seeds in the water. Those are all turning into rot that will just sit in the ocean indefinitely.

Edit: except the boat wreckage. I like to make little boat wrecks for decoration.

Yeah, I kind of find it weird. I assume it's either a natural thing, or somehow items can  fall into the ocean randomly and float somehow despite the fact there's no wind mechanic. There are alot of items in the game that can cause alot of clutter such as, Charcoal, stingers, twigs, and ect making it an absolute nightmare if it fell in the ocean. I agree with that fact, and I think ALL renewable objects in the ocean should despawn in a few days unless it was dropped by players dying or something else not to screw those people over.

As far as I know, twigs, grass, (some) driftwood and (some) boat fragments are spawned into the ocean by a mechanic for players to see and removes them days later if the player doesn't take them. I think its completely intentional for you to see them in the ocean like that.

Seeds, however, are a nightmare. Birds leave them everywhere and they don't get removed unless you stay near them for long enough for another bird to come. If that takes too long, congratulations! Your world now has one more rot that won't be removed unless you or someone else gets rid of it manually.

I think the best course of action would be to make seeds spoil into nothing rather than spoil into rot.

What if as an idea, Rot actually dusts away like ashes? Theres not really much to do as rot isn't really useful and both you end up storing the rot having it over take your storages as they get larger and larger in supplies. If they go with this as a way to clean the world naturally also make charcoal do that as well, as the servers can easily be screwed by someone burning a random forest and leaving there... now we just need to find a way for the world to clean stingers as there not really useful with only about pretty much 2 or 3 crafting recipes that uses stingers. ( I know I'm talking more about world cleaning and not the ocean being dirty. But I think if Klei is going to add alot of items in the ocean, they should focus on fixing the clutter in the forest then work their way onto the ocean.)

I find stockpiling large amount of rot to be very useful: they're good fertilizer for anything that doesn't use farm plots, and I can burn them for ashes whenever I need those. Rather than putting it in chests, though, I just leave it in a spot where I know no mobs will come and eat it. Plus, I don't think rot building up in the world is really a problem with rot itself. Seeds (and wet goop from catcoons, but that's minor) are the major source of random rot in the world, and I think just making seeds not turn into rot when they spoil would fix the issue.

Also, there's already a mechanic in place to prevent a burnt forest from forever lagging your world with charcoals. Burnt trees get removed a while after they've been burnt, and when they get removed they take nearby pine cones and charcoal with them.
