https://oxygennotincluded.gamepedia.com/Ceramic Ceramic is produced from a Kiln using 100 kg Clay and 25 kg Coal.

Ok...  granted, Coal has a relatively low power conversion rate, but it's still power with by far the easiest waste produce to get rid of -- CO2.  Send it to Slicksters, use a Carbon Skimmer to make P-H2O, vent it to space, or even just create an infinite volume storage room using the vent flooding trick.

I'm sure someone could even find a way to make use of the waste heat in the CO2 for some other process if they really really tried.  Coal is anything but useless.

With stone hatches and a regolith melter, you can turn 3kg of regolith into:

4 grams of dirt, using sieving

25 grams of dirt (with 100g of water needed), using slime

5.6 grams of pWater, using molten slicksters into petroleum generator

I agree.  I use coal for power in almost all my bases.  Its quick, its easy, and if you're ranching hatches for things like eggs and meat, it becomes very renewable.  Are there better fuels? Sure.. Petroleum and Natural Gas are equally renewable, but it takes time to research and design systems to produce their fuels.  In other words, there's a larger infrastructure necessary to use them.  A coal generator uses a raw resource already on the map in your starter biome that is also a waste product from creatures found, again, in your starter biome.  You don't need to DO anything to get fuel for a coal generator because odds are, you already have some laying around as you build your base.

As my base matures, my use of coal diminishes as my main power grid will be making use of steam and petroleum for the bulk of my power needs -- but early to mid game is always coal as the primary source of power.  Also, if you have an outpost that needs power, setting up a coal generator is quick and easy until you can extend your power grid.

I build my coal gens with the intention of making them my emergency power once I get the other generators up. If I run out of say nat gas, there's still reliable old coal to keep things going.

This.  I don't run out of NatGas, but given my power station is far from my geysers, it is possible for me to interrupt supply with remodeling.  Having coal on backup is great because if all else fails, dupes can always carry the fuel to the gens.  But I keep most of the coal next to them anyway, so it's a pretty reliable failsafe.

I have usually 0kg of clay sitting around unused and coal is 200t+ and I don't even care for it. I have to burn it all the time.

I just can't take it anymore!

@cpy coal is a lot more useful than for instance materials like sedimentary rock, regolith, etc later in the game. Yes, as a power source it gets superseded by advanced sources, but it's still very useful as a backup power supply, and you still need it to make steel and ceramic. If anything, just produce refined carbon with 5 kilns and use that to heat something that needs temperature.

It was just a ligut joke :) no biggie. Im only on cucle 700 and have lots of clay. Havent used coal in forever since im relyong on petrol generator but im also running out of that so i moght switch to nat gas and solar.

Does anyone here know what the ideal number of batteries are per solar panel?

Ive been using smart batteries for lower heat but the regular large batteries can store more power
