      UPDATED - Studio Note & Rhymes with Play Streams Temporarily Canceled.   03/06/2020

      UPDATE (3/19/20): Just a quick note regarding the team at Klei Entertainment. As noted previously, everybody at Klei Entertainment is working from home due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Many of us have been working especially hard to help maintain operations as we all move out of the office and into our homes and with everything being done online, extra time must be spent in organizing conversations and trying to maintain communication. As some of you may know, we have a very open office and we are almost always in contact with each other as we go about our days. Some of us work across multiple teams and that work has become a bit more challenging for everybody.   That being said, at this time the transition has not caused any major disruption in our operations, but it would be overly optimistic to expect that we won't have any delays at all. We're going to have to be especially mindful about this in the coming weeks and make sure we don't take on too much work so we can keep things running smoothly.  We will let you know as we see how these changes affect our timelines.  Thanks UPDATE (3/10/20):
      The test yesterday went well. We got the whole office (mostly) to work from home without significant issue. As a result, Klei Staff that can work from home have been asked to do so until further notice.  This means that we will have to cancel the Rhymes with Play stream until we are all back in the office. This shouldn't affect anything else at least in the short term, but if things change I will update you all here.  Original Post: Hey everybody,  This Tuesday March 10th, 2020 the entire staff at Klei will be working remotely for 1 day in an effort to prepare the studio to work remotely for a little while if the need arises.  Klei is already set up pretty well to allow for working remotely, however we are going to have a one day "dry run" with the whole studio so that we can identify and avoid any issues or downtime that may arise should choose to implement a work from home policy due to COVID-19 outbreak concerns. Unfortunately this does mean that we will be canceling the “Rhymes with Play” Art stream this coming Tuesday, however unless the situation changes we expect everything at the studio to be back to normal Wednesday and we’ll continue our regular stream schedule Thursday March 12th. If the situation changes at all, we'll let you know. Thanks for your understanding.

  1. Help Australia with forest fires

    Hello, Not my usual post around here, but I wanted to bring attention to this as a good buddy of mine is Australian. He has been deeply troubled by what is happening in his home country. I am not going to pretend that I fully grasp the situation, so it's best I quote him directly. If you want, please make a donation. The service(s) you are donating to are verified and we know for sure the money will be directly used to fighting the fires, or helping those who are affected by it. Thank you. A message to all members, The Californian Bushfires Total Size: 1,900,000 acres The Amazon Fires Total Size: 2,250,000 acres The CURRENT Australian Bushfires 12,000,000 acres... and rising every day I do not think that people understand what is happening right now. These are not normal Australian bushfires. The entire country is on fire. Most people have no conceptual understanding about just how big Australia is... and therefore, just how bad these fires are. They also just cannot fathom how terrifying and unstoppable a real bushfire is... Have you ever heard of, let alone seen, a fire tornado rip through nature? Being an Aerodynamicist, and therefore having a knowledge of how air (oxygen for the fire) moves and how heat causes it to, means that I have some understanding of how these fires flare up fast enough, that you cannot our-drive them, let alone out-run them, simply when the wind blows... which they generate for themselves by the extreme temperatures they scorch the ground and air with (see the video I linked below to see what I mean). The fact that only 15 people are dead is astonishingly low, but the half a billion (yes, with a "b") animals are dead, should give you some perspective. We have the worst air quality in the world now. Our Prime Minister has left the country, its wildlife, and nature to burn. He ignored the warnings of potential catastrophic fires, and his response to societies call to action, was to cut funding to the fire services by 70%, crippling the fire services across the nation. Fire-fighters have flown in from around the globe, to help us in this time of crisis. So, not only are our incredibly brave fire-fighters under resourced, but they are also fighting fires that the world has never seen before, dwarfing even the great Californian and Amazonian fires of the past. I live in Europe now, and so my ability to help my fellow Australians is limitted, however, I do have a reasonable amount of reach within this site, and in my friendship circles. I have linked the NSW Rural Fire Service website, who are trying to fight this on the front lines of the hardest hit areas, and need all the support they can get. https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/about-us/fundraising Secondly, to the Australian Red Cross. They are supporting people at evacuation centres by providing psychological support, first aid, emergency assistance (cash grants to people who have lost homes), supporting volunteers, and more. https://www.redcross.org.au/ And finally, to the World Wilflife Fund. They are housing and supporting injured animals from the bushfires aswell as rescuing others that are still in harms way. They will also be making an effort to rebuild the habitats and re-populate the species killed in these fires. https://www.wwf.org.au/get-involved/bushfire-emergency Any support that you may be willing to offer, is not only very much appreciated, but desperately needed. My sunburnt country... my... home... is burning to the ground, in an inferno... and we are absolutely powerless to stop it...

    I second that. I think given it is still early days, it's not really an issue that we for instance have to play with unfinished art or unrefined game mechanics. If bug and crash fixing pushes that backwards, then I can definitely cope with that. Just want to be able to try stuff out and give decent feedback. That's what testing is all about.

    For the record, I always agreed to have the water sieve a variable output. I even fully agree with a standard rise in temperature. However, a flatline base of 40°C and from there a variable output is shifting the balance too much to the other side. Also, I always believed that even though this was needed, additional or improved ways of cooling were also needed to compensate. The icemaker does not cut it, and with wheezeworts also somewhat nerfed, this will make cooling much more difficult. I think most experience players will be handly this, maybe even comfortably. However, do know new players will fail at this and maybe get extremely frustrated. Given the QoL updates were to make things easier for those players, I do feel this is nullifying to a degree the efforts made in QoL.

    You do get what I was saying, right? I hardly call sweepers not working a feature . And yes, the bunker door animation bug was quite annoying, but they would close and open eventually, just with a delay you could alteast build around fairly easy. Sweepers not working, that is game breaking for me. I am at the point where I want to automate my base as much as possible, including the food storage and supply. That's gone out of the window now.

    IMO, sweepers not working should be a high priority to fix. I can accept that for instance the steam turbine issues are lower priority, but conveyor and automation are a large part of the game. Not able to use them is missing out on a large part of the game. I effectively cannot play the game without the sweeper working!

    A new player would of course have less gripes with it. New players are always much more adaptable than us concerning gameplay mechanics. I do think if you put the choice of either having the convenience of double layering, so a new player has more ease in experimenting and constantling adapting his or her designs, or having to pay a (small) penalty for each change to a setup he or she is not immediately happy with and wants to improve, I think they'd also choose for convenience. Question remains of course: is double layering intuitive? I can't really answer that as a more experienced player stuck in his ways. My guess is if that if you are allowing double layering, it should be reflected in the tool tip which would help said new player understanding the capabilities of drywall. That was the original change, but that brought issues with doors and airflow/mesh tiles not being compatible anymore with drywall in space designs. That one change was very easy, but did not account for other gameplay mechanics. Changing those other mechanics was more difficult, and will be more difficult as again ladders proved surprisingly challenging in regards of inter replaceable. This has been a very time consuming experience for the developers and will consume time in the future. I agree with @Cairath when he says that time could have been spend for more pressing matters, like for instance the broken steam turbine.

    In my case it would be oxygen. Slightly more of an inconvenience, but ok: still just an inconvenience. It's something I can life with, but what it's more difficult to swallow is: why. Why did the change had to go this way. We talked about there's perhaps an exploit with more mass being able to absorb more heat. I think it was you who proposed a much better alternative by reducing the mass of the drywall tile. I am all for stopping exploits, but most people do not use that exploit and those people are also having to do a lot more work now. As it stands now, you'll manually have to deconstruct and construct when you want to adapt your setup of tiles and drywall. Now I assume this will change in the future where tile and drywall can just replace eachother. Doors too hopefully, and the issue will become minimized towards loosing gasses when replacing doors. I can life with that. But was it really necessary? It's possibly even a much bigger inconvenience towards the developers because having tiles replace other tiles is not straightforward (just look at the bugs that came with replacing ladders). New art had to be made for the doors. They had to code that open doors would not loose gasses anymore. They had to code that pneumatic doors let gasses through but not let it suck out into the vacuum. The had to do the same for mesh/airflow tiles,... . So yeah, again: why.

    Doors will be impossible to replace with leaking out some gas. As soon as one drywall is done, the door should be deconstructed, at which point the second tile will leak out gas. Not even mentioning the technical challenge this brings and all the bugs along.

    You don't have to. Cairath developed a mod a week or so ago: And yes, I will be using this mod. If there was a meaningful exploit that had to be fixed, it should have been done differently. I'm all for making the game more difficult. Hell, I would love for instance the drywall break and leak out gas if the internal pressure got too high of a pressurized room in a vacuum. But this change is just tedious and only leads to annoyance. I'm sorry developers, but this is the opposite of a QoL change. What also annoys me is that the developers never put out any reasoning for this. We can only guess based on the bug reports and what they have answered, but was that the true reason to go to such lengths just not to revert the changes? IMO, it looks more to be intellectual stubborness than anything else.

    @Ipsquiggle do not forget background art for the airflow/mesh tiles as well (should be pretty straightforward because of no animations).
  19. Cannot build Walls, Doors on top of a Drywall

    Will the doors, which have opening animations, and the mesh/permeable tiles, which have textures you can "look though" have some sort of back wall texture? Functionally what you propose would definitely fix the problem, but aesthetically you will have a hole/opening to space. This might create the impression said doors and tiles do allow gasses to escape, while that isn't the case. Plus it simply gives an "unfinished" appearance.
  20. Yeah, I agree. We should be allowed to turn it off (please, do leave it enabled by default!). My current base is large and operation stretch across the whole depth of the asteroid. On top of that I harvest wil grown sleet wheat, which automatically brings long traveling times with it. But the dupes I need to stay near one spot -chefs, ranchers- have low traveling times. All the rest have to travel a lot due their roles in the colony.

    Hello Cairath, Is it possible to make a mod for the preview branch that reverses the drywall and background window changes?
  24. I'm just going to point out, next to my own separate topic, how this change makes it unable to retain gasses with pneumatic doors, gas permeable tiles and open airlocks. This change is frankly speaking rediculous and has to be reversed.
  25. I do agree that this should be tweaked eventually, but I'm more than glad to wait for that in favour of game performance optimization and bug fixes. Get the game running smooth first, worry about content and game play tweaking later.
