Gas geysers should be fired. Lets hire... relics.

Do we need gas geysers?

  1. 1. Should we fire gas geysers and hire more relics instead?

The best geyser in ONI is by no doubt the cold slush geyser. It produces COLD Polluted water, which is capable of cooling down/ produce dirt/ produce oxygen / produce food. So many things are inside this one little geyser, that having two of them in a map is basically enough for a normal colony to survive indefinitely.

However, Most of the gas geysers are basically useless. A colony only needs oxygen (and maybe hydrogen). Anything else is impractial. Most of the job a gas geyser can do, a water geyser can do. They don't deserve to be in the game at all.

So, why don't we just dump all of these gas geysers out to space? Our colonies have no space for no-good geyser colonists. Geysers are supposed to be rewards for pathfinding and mining.

Instead, shove in some relics we can research. Some part of spaceship so we can learn about rockets.

Honestly, and this may very well be an unpopular opinion, cold slush geysers should be the ones to go.

Why? Like the OP just said, all other geysers are useless by comparison. There is far too much variety in geysers that is wasted potential when you're made to feel like a map is useless without slush geysers on it.
No matter how you buff the other geysers (which is sorely needed with several of them), slush will still come out on top because of the incredible usefulness of polluted water compared to everything else, it being cold to start with is just icing on the cake (pun definitely intended).

So, yeah... for the sake of good game balance and variety we should get rid of slush geysers alltogether. Either that or nerf them to oblivion.
Give bad geysers a buff instead, like 10x output of the hydrogen and 2-3x output on the CO2 geyser.

Non-scientific legendary magic artifects...

Wait what the hack am I thnking?

Well really... I actually want to say NO to this.

Fire geysers and employ buried relics are probably ruining a natural-gas based early-stage economy.

Then we're still left with obviously good geysers, like metal volcanos and water geysers, vs. totally useless geysers like CO2, chlorine, pO2.

A CO2 geyser would need average output around 2kg/s of liquid CO2 to compete with utility of water geyser+oil well. And that's assuming the player has a way to use all of the CO2, like a massive slickster ranch.

pO2 geyser would need output comparable in quantity to water geyser to matter.

The idea of having good geysers, like slush and water, with crap geysers, like CO2 and hot steam, on the same spawn list, is just plain unworkable. This is why nowadays everyone should use the seed database https://toolsnotincluded.net/ until Klei figures out a way to fix their mistake.

The difference is that cold steam (water) geysers are guaranteed spawns, and made that way for a reason. They are simply too essential to leave up to chance. The same with Natgas.
IF cold slush was also made into a guaranteed spawn I wouldn't hate on it so much, because then it's output would be an intended part of the difficulty curve. As it is now, it's basically a toss up whether you get a normal map or an EZ-mode one.

Metal volcanoes basically adjust nothing. There's already veritable megatonnes of metal already on the map, and meteors constantly deposit more. Not so for sub-zero polluted water.

Hot steam is utterly pointless though, I agree. It's output and temperature is near-completely worthless, whereas CO2 geysers you actually CAN utilize to feed scrubbers for PH2O or slicksters for oil/petro. Chlorine has a late-game use for moos, and the only way (AFAIK) to get more of it so they should stay.

Cold water is overrated - cooling is very easy after early game. You only need to cool water for plants. If you're cooling air in main base, you're 95% likely to be doing it wrong. Also, you don't need that much cold water if you don't need to refine metal. In the end, slush geyser is just a tiny bit better than the hot pwater geyser.

The labor and cooling need (refinery) saved by having a gold geyser is worth much more than any cooling a geyser could ever hope to provide. And that's even before factoring in that it's infinite.

We need some balance for the geysers that`s all. CO2 geysers produce so little you can`t sustain a single slickster. PO2 can`t sustain pufts. Hot steam produces almost nothing. Meanwhile cool slush floods you with cold water. One type of geyser shouldn`t be 100 times more effective than an other type. Addjust the numbers and it`ll be fine.
