Recipe availability

Recommended Posts

A question keeps popping up on the forum; why can't I make steel.

Recipe's should be available when researched, not when the ingredients are available, this would be a much friendlier system for newer players.

The current system of enabling a recipe once it's ingredients are available is just obtuse and completely unnecessary.

Unlock it when you research the metal refinery.

Unlock space age material recipes when you research the protowhatchamacallitinizer.

Buildings appear with a mystery icon in the menu when they can be researched; are greyed out when researched but their mats are unavailable; are colored and clickable when it becomes possible to build.  Recipes should follow the same pattern, not simply appear at the last step.

You cant research steel. So?

But you can research a structure that creates steel as well as structures that require exclusively steel to be constructed. I guess we can count that as researching steel.

I think all recipies should be visible from the start. Just so that new players have a direction to work towards.

Yeah the recipes should always be there.

There's no way this is good for new players or even entertaining, because the only solution you have is google, and when you google you kill any intention of "They want players to discover new things.".

+1 vote for recipes always being there.

They should change it, as it's insensitive to new players and unnecessarily awkward, aka obtuse.

Another daily case of, How do I cook that?

I agree. In our local FB group, there are so many newcomers keep on asking this type of question since QoL upgrade

Fully agree.

There's no reason why recipes shouldn't be visible from the get go. If Klei wants to keep the lists smaller for brevity to keep newbs from being overwhelmed they can slot the recipes at the bottom of the list, greyed out, under a bar saying [unavailable].Clicking on it should give the same message as for greyed out buildings that a certain material hasn't been discovered yet.

I agree as well. Started a new game and was just confused why no recipes at my musher were appearing. For a brand new player it must feel frustrating/confusing (or like a bug) considering one of your first priorities is food yet when you build a food machine nothing appears.

The only way I can see it working is by adding 2 things:

1 - The machines should have a message saying new recipes will be uncovered as you find new materials. Maybe backed up y a tutorial message from the Overseer (you)

2 - There should be a notification when a new recipe is added to a machine (for example "Water discovered: new recipe available at Musher: Mush Bar" (with a clickable link which brings up the nearest musher).

Even so for some of the basic food items I think the recipes should be there from the start, they give you some direction as to what resources you need first.

And now, new player comes and asks what fiber is almost every day in our local community. They do not know that what they are looking for is actually a product from plant, and yet blindly search through database under material/element category. At current state of the game it is not wise to introduce ONI to new player at all.

I like the idea that the ingredients of the recipe should always be visible. This way you always know what you need to discover to unlock the product. The product could remain a mystery or just be identified by name.

This could even be tiered. If you build the Molecular Forge it could simply state you need to discover space travel (ie, build a telescope). This would help guide new players in right direction without taking away all the surprises :)

I fully agree with this.

It is just simply weird not to see options for steel etc.

New players will not discover this in game, instead they will just ask endless questions on forums or gwt discoruage thinking that this is not yet in place as it is alpha version.

Not everyone love this game from beginning and at day one jump to forum to spend multiple hours to read about it.

It will get with time of course thats why we are here, but just like in other (well designed) games doors open always outside this change would just make game more approachable

Looks like this is changing:

Changed Status to Fixed

We've improved this for the next release, both by adding a message when no recipes are discovered, and by being more generous about when recipes show up (only one ingredient is needed rather than all ingredients).
