This got me thinking...

I think there have been a lot of suggestions like this in the past but I'm told not to necro so here...

Have you ever wanted your bird cages to give you a little extra something? Want that special something to be feathers? Well... I've got a seemingly logical method!

If we feed birds certain crop seeds, they eat them and they "molt" a feather!

Of course I don't mean for them to go bald... so here...

  • Feeding a Redbird a Dragon Fruit Seed will yield a Red Feather!
  • Feeding a Bluebird a Water Melon (RoG content)/Eggplant (Night Shade)/Durian/Pumpkin Seed will yield a Blue Feather!
  • Feeding a Crow an Eggplant (Night Shade)/Durian/Pumpkin Seed will yield a Jet Feather!

Now you may ask if that's fair?

Well, first you have to raise these crops... keep a constant supply of them lying around... If you want to get a Redbird Feather, you have to grow dragon fruits... but to make more, you have to plant the seeds...

You get crop seeds by feeding the bird the crop itself and will yield a crop seed... but sometimes it only drops 1... so you get the issue...

This also raises the usage of the farm plots... so that gives you more things to do!

@Asparagus, Hmm.. I think it would be a little strong if it were one-to-one guaranteed conversion. And you give the most options for the snowbird feathers, but those are the most valuable.

Maybe if it had 50/50 chance of giving a generic seed or a feather, and there was only one crop to give each (Dragonfruit = red, watermelon = blue, durian = black).

Or maybe if the birds could only drop feathers so often... Maybe they have a preening animation when they can drop a feather, but once they drop one, they can't drop another for 3 days. Then if you really wanted feathers, you'd have to have whole aviaries o_o

@rezecib, I wasn't really sure about what crops to feed the snowbird so I just listed some options... I do agree that...

Yeah... I always wanted an Aviary... (now you made me want to capture buzzards and perds in cages O__O)

Wait...what if you did this with mushrooms?

Red- red feather

Green- crow feather

Blue- blue feather

That way, the rarest mushroom gives the rarest feather.

Also, it should probably be a drop chance because having a guaranteed feather is a bit op in my opinion.

Cool concept but there is a mod like said before @Michi01

Also I think I find it a bit unnecessary as you can just trap or hunt birds and having your pet bird drop feathers is a bit too much and people would mass produce darts, making a lot of mobs too easy to kill.

Very true, I think having a way of getting feathers that doesn't require materials like silk for bird traps or charcoal and boards for boomerangs is rather op and would make darts much easier to acquire.

Uhh...

Well...

I actually meant to say that we should implement this... in the official game?

My thought exactly, the different darts should be hard to obtain items since they can be very powerful.

OK, why not we make the drops a periodical even... say every 15-20 days? That's not too much... but not too many too...

I actually have a lot of excess Blowdarts from killing McTusks every winter... I get like, at most, 6 per winter... I don't usually use them much so I horde them... so... yeah... I didn't have to kill for feathers really... I only kill birds with boomerangs just to fight Krampus for a chance to get at his coveted sack...

...

I really like making aviaries O__O

...

Or we can make a separate bird cage-like structure where you can put in at most 6 birds and could drop stuff from time to time... but you have to feed them else they die... that should balance out the feather drop...

@Asparagus, The time interval could actually work, maybe a feather drops every 5-10 days, 15 seems a bit high IMO. Actually better yet a bird in a cage could drop 3-4 feathers at the beginning of each summer, as birds do molt their feathers at least yearly. That way you have to survive a winter in order to get the dropped feathers...

..Not sure about the season that happens in or if it really matters tho =]

Oh and I agree if you are smart about it you can get lots of blow darts in the winter by both trapping snowbirds and killing Mctusk n' son... Which may actually support the reasoning behind making it too easy to get darts because they would be even easier to get.

Spweee! I forgot about the molting thing!! Yeah, like an event! I like it! But should we actually show that these birds molt? should we make them look bald? Like beefalos after being shaved...

@GoshJosh, I will now add you as a friend... O__O

HERE Are THE FORMS
