Idea to fix lag issues in preview

reading about all this lag, im afraid to test the preview branch now.

I never do preview updates anymore. Fool me 5 times, shame on me or something like that. I guess I just realized I'm not really that much of a masochist that I want to have a week every 6 weeks where my gaming experience is frustrating to no end.

The lag is caused by a flag. And yes its useful for KLEI to get the relevant data.

For myself i can say, its not playable on my computer with this flag acttive. But i want to test the new features, and give feedback and bug reports via the bug-section of the forum.

So, recently i found out, there is a file called boot.config in the OxygenNotIncluded_Data folder.

When changing the entry player-connection-debug=1 to 0, there is no more lag.

Yes, of course, its not what KLEI intended with the preview branch. But for me, its either disabling this (every time there is a patch), or wont test at all.

If hits information is not wanted to be published here, KLEI and the forum-mods may remove this, and i apologize.

Klei should make two different preview branches:

  • logged_space_industry_preview
  • unlogged_space_industry_preview

This would make it so people without top of the line computers can test the new junk without having their computer fry.

There's already a way to disable logging on the preview branch, but keep in mind it prevents Klei from getting useful information.

Open the file boot.config in the game folder OxygenNotIncluded_Data and change player-connection-debug=1 to player-connection-debug=0.

That's a great way. To respect Klei, I will report my own message and ask if I can get permission to try out the preview branch with the logging tools turned off. I really wish I could run the game with the logging tools, but I can't. I am much more of use if I can test out the preview properly, than having to wait for the live branch.

My opinion is:

If you want to test and help kley fix as many issues you and they found, you can run the game slower...if you don't want to.. then play only the stable version...

I would completely agree with running just slower. I think most would. You have to make a difference between running just slower and running to a max of 5 FPS, which would make testing things out pretty undoable. Just swatting the problem away as "just run the game slower" is not going to help things. We all are prepared to take a FPS hit as long as it remains reasonable. It's frankly not unless you start a new colony. But that is pointless too: all the new stuff is at the highest level. Should anybody do the effort to start a new colony and work themselves up to the position of utilising the new content, their game will have that same extremely low FPS problem. Not just slower, but unworkable low.

I am still very much prepared to do this on Klei their terms. That's why I did ask permission. If they don't give permission, than I will be fine with that and wait for the live branch. But if they will allow me to run the game without the debug tools, I will be able to test things out, give feedback and make possible bug reports. IMO, it's better them getting feedback and bug reports and no debug data, than no feedback, no bug reports and no debug data.

For the record, I want to make clear my pc has good enough specs. It can run for instance Witcher 3 really fine. A game like ONI does not require that level of specs. I think nobody has issues with the frames because of their pc not having sufficient hardware.
