Tackling the surface

Recommended Posts

Because of the incoming rocketry upgrade, I have worked up the courage to actually breach the surface and have made my own meager attempts to clear out some of the regolith and slowly build up some kind of bunker there.  In my current game, I discovered meteors about to break through into a large ice biome, set up some exosuit stations at the top, and began building a few layers of tiles in the hopes of protecting it while I work on steel production.  I know progress will be slow.

Would any of you mind sharing your methods and the order in which you establish yourself on the surface (while also dealing with meteors?)

Also, I assume it would be safer to tunnel through from farther below?  I tend to be a bit frantic about it and break through at the top, which can cause heat problems from the scorching material sitting directly above.

I build a horizontal Corridor 2 high, with mafic rock floor.

Any position covered by only regolith I clear The regolith & bunkertile The open space.

Any position covered by regolith + granite/mafic/abyssalite I leave The regolith in place.

Took about ~15 steel tiles for entire space biome.

I think building a few layers fo tiles at top of each biome touching the surface without even breaching through the surface is a good way to buy time befeore you are ready with a long term solution. The positive side is that you don`t have to set up exo suits for that just explore the top of the map right under the space biome.

Personally, I found that its much easier to start building in a bordering biome and then dig up to the space biome.

This way construction is much faster as you don't need exosuits and deal with the meteor showers.

Here is my WIP - Solar tower, for example:

Exactly what i meant. You could even use just regular tiles when steel is not available yet just to buy some time.

Side question: ladder + tube = gas seal + dupe movement ?

I have not played with tubes yet

This needs a tube entrance to be usable. Probably a WIP.

Its WIP, here are the blue prints (fully-automated solar farm) I'm working with (designed by me-self!)

If this works, this would be my first success at taming the space biome and constructing my first solar farm!

From there, I could hopefully expand this to the 2nd part of the plan...a rocket launch base!

P.S. also tubes are awesome.
