Breeding critters to maturity with least dupe power

Recommended Posts

I have found a way to let hatches mature to adults and then join the others with the excess getting slaughtered. 51 tiles wide(2x 4 high 96 tile rooms)5b84cce29ae1d_Hatchfarm.thumb.jpg.b4b58e195b0ad7f7983650cab1659d63.jpg

The red areas are where eggs are dropped a couple times a day. There the eggs hatch and the young ones live. When they mature they use the yellow area ladders to get food and get dropped into the area with other hatches(black for normal hatches, grey for sage hatches). This way you cant kill off your critters off without watching. if the adult hatch areas have excess they are wrangled automatically and sent to the blue room to drown during the night. The problems I have had with this: Hatches getting moved to slaughtering sometimes get dropped(break time) and end up in random places and wrangled hatches dropping back into red areas when I open the doors to drop eggs. Also doors opening during the day cause dupes to stop ranching and go do other stuff. Any ideas how to improve this?

Have you guys found ways to do this with dreckos, slicksters or pufts? I would rather get the meat for barbeque than eggs for omelettes

It's a very nice setup.

The drowning room could be built right below the stable entrance, for a shorter travel path between the two drop-offs. And if a duplicant drops an hatch, it would fall directly into it.

For the interrupted ranching, maybe use automation to lock the entrance door for a few seconds after the doors opening? If a dupe is in the stable, he will be locked inside and have nothing to do but to resume the ranching errands.

Otherwise the only other thing I can think of is to use a sweeper arm instead to move the eggs out of the room.

(Edit : typos)

My setup is similar to yours but the eggs are collected by sweepers in the ranches and brought to a nursing spot where a timed sweeper drops those eggs on the floor. It's not as compact as your setup but it works for dreckos too (sometimes they survive the flooding by hanging on the ceiling but they die eventually). I assume it can also work for slicksters, never tried automating those yet.

@Sheo how would you go about the automation? from what I figured you will need like 1 egg in 15 to sustain and you can eat the rest. (my math can be way off). So if I had a way to kill the other 14 automatically like you say, that would be heaven.

this is a setup I'm testing right now. Basically most eggs fall through, hatch, die and meat is collected, while some will stay on the ledges and autoreplenish the popullation. Rest will be wrangled to another killroom which I have to setup.

also I love the idea and the design

Finaly finished my binary code counter

I was thinking of making a counter in automation but didn`t have a use for it yet. Thought about controlling how many dupes are outside the base at a time but then i realised i can just use exosuits for that. Ranch control is something where i can actuallu utilise a counter.
