I thought I'd drop this in here, and see if we can come up with ideas to improve these little fishies.
At the moment they are pretty much useless to farm, as their requirement is algae, which is very difficult to come by in the amounts needed.
Their 'product' isn't very useful either, so their only desirable trait is that they have big eggs.

Here's some of my ideas:
1) reduce the amount of algae they eat, and increase their output to 100%

This solution is far from perfect as you would have to reduce the amount of food they need drastically this way ( like 10% of what it is now ), which would reduce their output even at 100% to next to nothing, which makes them less than useful.

2) Change their diet to polluted water even for the base pacu. Have their calorie needs taken care of by eating polluted water and letting out clean water.

Do you have any idea how to farm Pacu? Pacu is the best critter to farm, the supply meat + all the eggshell you need.

Build a big tank (by big, i mean really really big), then, feed them algae until they almost overcrowded, then stop feeding. Pacu is the only mob that can turn wild again after stop feeding,  so they ll continue their life cycle all by themself, and, supply as much meat and eggshell as how large pacutank you have for no resource at all.

Instead of farming them fast by feeding them alot of algae continuously, farming them by giving them lots of living space. As long as they are not overcrowed, they will reproduce before they starve. Thank to Pacus, i already block the entire top of the map with bunker door (i only use 12 tons of Algae to increase their population, then i let this tank produces materials for hundreds of cycles), which cost tons of steel.

Here is my tank

I'd say start with fixing starvation and feeding bugs - right now you can feed pacu with 1kg of food by limiting the feeder and they're still happy - there's your 14000% decrease!

Also for critters in general, if you let them starve and reload => they're at 100% starving.

If you use those 2 glitches, you'll have no problem making a huge pacu farm(and not only pacu) ;)

Now comes the hard question - what to do if the game actually requires 140kg Algae for Pacus?

I'd say you can still make a pretty decent farm by just keeping the fishes wild and not feeding them, while farming their eggshells and meat between fish generations.
