Rewards Logic

Recommended Posts

I haven't had much data to work with, but have decided to share some findings on how it looks like rewards are intended to work in The Gorge. Anything I am not very confident with will be underlined. Let me know if anything's missing or results don't match.

Each type of reward has a "coin value" used to calculate bonuses, penalties, and conversions as follows:

  • Old Coin = 1 coin value
  • Sapphire Medallion = 6 coin value
  • Red Mark = 12 coin value
  • Gnaw's Favor = 18 coin value

All calculations are subject to flooring (rounding down to nearest integer) after 0.5 is added.

Penalties

Stale penalty - serving a dish that is stale applies a 0.75x penalty.

Spoiled penalty - serving a dish that is spoiled applies a 0.5x penalty.

Mismatch penalty - serving a dish that does not satisfy the current craving applies a 0.5x penalty.

Dessert penalty - serving a dish that does not meet Dessert expectations (Dessert on non-Dessert round, non-Dessert on Dessert round) applies a 0.5x penalty.

Snack penalty - serving a dish tagged with Snack on a Bread, Veggie, Fish, Meat, or Cheese round applies a 0.75x penalty.

Downgrades

If a penalty is applied on a dish, coin value will first be deducted from the highest tiered rewards until the penalty is satisfied. (e.g. 1 Red Mark becomes 1 Sapphire Medallion + 6 Old Coins, where the Old Coins are used on the penalty)

Bonuses

Silver-plating a dish applies a 1.25x bonus and upgrades its reward tiers.

Upgrades

Dessert round upgrades the reward tiers of dishes tagged with Dessert if not silver-plated.

The upgrade process is as follows:

  • There will be an attempt to create rewards one tier above each existing reward. (e.g. 6 Old Coins = 1 Sapphire Medallion)
  • If the preceding tier has enough combined value, more than one new reward may be created. (i.e. 12 Old Coins + 3 Old Coins = 2 Sapphire Medallions + 3 Old Coins)
  • The resulting Old Coin reward can not be less than 2, with the exception of Jam on Dessert.

I am not aware of any large scale data collection for other penalties, but if people can report unexpected values received on a dish we might be able to figure out why.

For #69, cheesecake does not get a favor outside of a dessert round (cheese) even when on a silver plate. I'll edit my post later and see exactly what rewards I get.

So far your calculations seem to be mostly accurate. This is pretty interesting.

This silver-plated Scone on Bread craving reward supports that a silver-plated dessert will provide silver rewards on non-Dessert cravings:

Cheesecake - gives favor on Dessert craving, with or without silverware; no favor on Cheese craving

Scone - gives favor on Dessert craving, with or without silverware, and on Bread craving, with silverware; no favor on Bread craving without silverware

A silver-plated Fist Full of Jam should also be tested on Snack if the silver-plated Cheesecake doesn't provide its silver rewards on Cheese.

Right, it's odd that scone on a silver plate during bread craving gives a favor when cheesecake on a silver plate during cheese doesn't.

I'll test cheesecake with a silver plate on cheese again to be sure (in case Klei updated anything), as well as silver plated jam on snack and stale scone on dessert.

I'm currently at work but I'll edit my post once I get a chance to play The Gorge to give any information that can help us figure this out.

Edit #1

Okay, so I've been able to test stale scone on dessert craving, stale scone with silver plate on dessert craving, and fist full of jam with silver plate on snack craving. I've had no luck getting a cheese craving though so the cheesecake will have to wait for a bit.

Stale scone without plate on dessert gives 1 red mark and 5 old coins.

Stale scone with a silver plate on dessert gives 1 favor and 3 old coins.

Fist full of jam with a silver plate on snack gives 1 sapphire and 2 old coins.

Edit #2

Apparently Klei has been changing quite a few things because it now seems impossible to get cheese craving on round #8. So I finally got cheese on meal #13 and gave it to The Gnaw on a silver plate. Surprisingly, it does give a favor now.

Cheesecake on a silver plate for cheese craving gives 1 favor, 1 red mark, 3 old coins.

Thanks for testing it out. Unfortunately I had thought a stale Scone would give 18 when it's actually 17.

I had also noticed quite a few "balancing" changes since day 1 beta, but the information I used should be for the most part current.

Think we're almost there, everything but about 3 penalty aspects (order of application, dessert) and downgrades confirmed.

This is a list of penalized returns:

1SM+6OC (12) with 0.75 penalty returns 9OC (9)
1SM+8OC (14) with 0.75 penalty returns 11OC (11)
2SM+4OC (16) with 0.75 penalty returns 1SM+6OC (12)
2SM+6OC (18) with 0.75 penalty returns 1SM+8OC (14)
1RM+8OC (20) with 0.75 penalty returns 1SM+9OC (15) AND with 1.25 bonus returns 1RM+7OC (19)
2RM+4OC (28) with 0.5*0.75 penalty returns 11OC (11) AND with 1.25 bonus returns 1RM+2OC (14)
2RM+6OC (30) with 0.5 penalty returns 1SM+9OC (15) AND with 1.25 bonus returns 1RM+7OC (19)
Dessert 1GF+4OC (22) with 0.75 penalty returns 1RM+5OC (17) AND with 1.25 bonus returns 1GF+3OC (21)

Silver-plated 1RM+1SM+5OC (23) with 0.5 penalty returns 1RM (12)

I thought that I should reply to this thread to make it more visible since the new update added more achievements to obtain.

1 of the achievements specifically requires you to escape The Gorge without satisfying any cravings at all.

That means you guys have to figure out which meals will get sapphire medallions, red marks, and favors without being offered on any accepted craving.

My best guess is that Caramel Cube/Cheesecake gets favors even outside of their rounds if they're given on a silver plate.

Once again, thanks to HamBatter for all the great work and to all the members of this community who took the precious time out of their lives to help others out with their knowledge.

You guys are all awesome and I wish you all the best of luck hunting the new achievements! :wilson_goodjob:

Edit #1

Okay, so we've found out that meat stew in a silver bowl gives a red mark when offered on any craving except dessert/meat/soup.

Also, you don't need a sapphire medallion but you'll have to open all 3 safes to get 3 silver plates, 1 silver bowl, and 1 large cook pot and 1 large casserole dish.

You make meat wellington on a silver plate for favors on any round except dessert/meat.

If you guys are looking for an in-depth guide, here it is made by Fluffy animal.

I can't tell if this is another exception or not to this rule...

But silver plated garlic bread gives simply one red mark with no extra old coins when served as bread (it gives an additional 3 old coins when served as a snack) I assume this has something to do with the snack penalty. I'm sure you're aware of this but I'd figure I'd mention it anyway just in case.

Okay, so before I got disconnected (which seems to be happening to everyone right now), I found out a couple of things which will help you guys work towards the 'never satisfied' achievement.

#1

Meaty Stew in a silver bowl gives 1 red mark and nothing else when given on a fish craving. I don't know if it'll give 1 red mark on any other cravings that aren't meat/soup, but fish works. This is how you get your red marks without satisfying a craving.

#2

Cheesecake on a silver plate did not give a favor when given on a bread craving. I'm still pretty sure the last 4 desserts are how you get your favor without fulfilling a correct craving, but bread isn't one of them. Perhaps snack craving might work?

#3

You don't need a sapphire medallion if you open all 3 safes. You will guarantee to have 4 plates, 4 bowls, and a large casserole dish for your desserts and large cookpot for your meaty stews.

#4

Stone soup gives 1 of the best values for old coins even when given on incorrect cravings. Budget will probably be an issue since you will not be satisfying any craving. Save some berries for cheesecakes, though.

#5

Have Wes on the team preferably. Again, budget probably can be an issue without satisfying correct cravings.

That rule does not apply when penalties are involved, or maybe base value is still taken into consideration. I had initially assumed bonuses were applied before penalties, when it is the other way around.

Considering giving a desert not on it's desired round, as said by this thread, grants an additional penalty—deserts aren't the way to go.

Crab Ravioli seems like a solid choice since it has the highest total payout, and isn't a desert or snack.

I found that out reviewing the recipe book just now and reading another topic. I think I've basically figured the strategy out.

It's on the strategy forums if people want some not fully tested advice.

Thank you for the help, though!

I tried it on veggie, and it also gave a mark.

I've found an inconsistency where 10OC will return 3OC on Dessert round instead of 2OC from any order of the Mismatch (0.5) Dessert (0.5) and Snack (0.75) penalties. This may suggest that the Snack penalty is not applied when there is a Dessert penalty.
