Question for DEVs: geyser type randomness and frustration

Recommended Posts

Hi,

To be honest I've sink over 1000h into ONI. Never finished any game - when my colony can survive I start new one so my cycle counter is between 100..300. When starting new game I name it with shortcut of current added feature and number to it (incrementing counter) so my current game has name is CU-77.

Do you believe or not with CU-77 I got first time one single slush geyser...

My first save with Ranching Update Mark 1 where new geysers has been added  has index 60 (R1-60). From that pov. the chance for slush looks really low 1/17 - even less if we count all non guaranteed geysers on a maps. For me it means that really RNG for geysers is somehow unbalanced. I know it is RNG - it could happen I will get slush geyser three or more times in a row but still 1/17 looks bad for my taste.

that's exactly what i posted about - RNG does not need to be blind and dumb - for better expirience it's better to have controlled RNG

good point with marking saves with indexes) will start doing that so i will be able to tell how many more colonies i have to play in ADDITION to current approximate 30 to finally find a polluted water geyser...

congrats on getting this geyser from 17th attempt :) i'm envy :D

If I get a Hot Polluted Oxygen or Minor Volcano I immediately reroll. Call me lame but these are just no fun. How to use them is not straightforward and sometimes too complicated. If certain map constellations are more fun than others, then that's a balancing problem. If you start a game you reasonably expect the same level of fun every time. Image each McRonalds would have its own french fries recipie. Consistency is even more important than quality.

It's okay if it is hard. But it is not okay to dig around for the last 40 cycles and discover your 4th metal vulcano. That is just simply discouraging depressing and off-putting.

Just add the rule that each random geyser may appear only nce or twice maximum, that way  they all keep being unique and useful and rewarding.

You restart the game, after you found one of the both?
I did not use it, but in the forum is a safe file editor around.

so not only debug mode now but also modifying save files... do you understand the meaning of "normal gameplay" and that user should not do whatever extra stuff with a piece of software to get the desired result? the only thing which is needed to tweak with geysera is to make RNG smarter and not spawn 1-2 of same geysers (literally same) and 100% spawn chance for each CATEGORY of geyser (e.g. 1 CO2 [gas or liquid], 1 water [steam or water geyser], 1 polluted water, 1 power gas [natural gas or hydrogen], 1 volcano [magma or metal]). maybe additionally separate magma volcanos and metal volcanos.

The randomness is awesome. Finding a 50g/s 50% 500c active hydrogen vent isnt. Its not even worth the time to dig it out!

Its a free resource, so not digging it out is just stupid.

  • Its easy to cool down without using power
  • Its free power

That is 15kg of gas, Enough to power a generator for quarter of a cycle, every cycle FOR FREE. Store it or use it.

Are you wanting spoon fed as well? Must every single geyser output thousands for you to be happy?

Unless Klei let all kinds of geyser will appear in a map, nothing can help your case. This means, a map will have at least 18 geysers. The number of geyser is almost as double as used to be.

I understand your annoyance at the multiple of the same type; they should add a weighting system so as more of a type appear the odds weight away  from that type.  this would prevent the issue you saw anyway.

I like the randomness, the geysers aren't necessary, they are nice finds.  not everyone plays your way also.. last I checked this is survival not colonization, but again that's in how you play. Personally I adapt each play through to what I find.

In my latest play through I found I had a cool steam geyser really close, most of my time has been spent dealing with that so far, i've had a blast.

Dave, I like you, I have the same though, I found a cool steam vent and after 400 cycles, I finally tamed it, using a nice cooling module to condense the water and I even made a cooling station so I can fee my plants!!!

Next up for me is to build my steam turbine on my volcano to make it ready for steam power
