Hydrolizer setup

Recommended Posts

I know that there are more compact, more efficient hydrolizer setups, but i wanted to come up with something very low tech and silly of my own design. Something easy to build, good enough self cooling capability, and above all, has to be serviceable/upgradeable. I can also use the existing wort chambers to build another hydrolizer room to either side, probably at a loss of some efficiency, but these things dont run full time anyways.

Once built, i can open the inner doors and activate the pumps to vacuum out any garbage. Then, close the doors, and fire up the hydrolizer. The hydrogen will fill up the wort chambers, and everything gets going. If a dupe needs to go inside for some reason (like awkward pipe cold/hot shenanigans or fix something, and later on replace granite plates with diamond)), it can be restarted in no time. I added a thermo sensor on the outside to control the doors, but could be anything else, even a hydro sensor. Juts so dupes dont have to go toggle anything for the moment.

Everything was build with accessible materials in an early game, granite for the plates and pipes, gold for pumps, hydrolizer and metal tiles, and wolframite for doors.

Since im quite bad at this game, there is a good chance i missed something obvious or something that could have been built a little more efficiently. For that reason, im opened to ideas on how to improve this contraption :)  Batteries dont need to be included, theyre there just to add a bit more heat to the output pipe.

Few cycles later, for my surprise, the temperature inside was still going down, although very slowly. This is the output temperature. Might be a bit of a problem, actually.

Since electrolyzers output gas at a fixed 75C, isolated electrolyzer chambers will eventually stabilize around that temperature, which is comfortably within tolerance for machinery built with gold. It's probably easier and more efficient to cool just the oxygen output to your desired temp rather than cooling the whole system like that.

Not a bad idea! I can definitely see some improvements. Could use less wheezeworts and maybe throw in some water as coolant.

Using liquid coolant is something im trying to avoid in this setup, for the sake of simplicity and cleanliness. The number of worts is meant to be preparation for more adjacent chambers, as a concept.

I will be building this in my 20 dupe colony, that will give me a good idea if 2 or 3 is enough for them to be comfortable in a real scenario. Because playing in debug mode and doing things with dupe sweat are 2 different things :)

This is very similar to one of the first builds I did when the automation update first came out - however the main problem i found was the 1kg/s throughput of the worts - which ultimately became a bottleneck for me :/

I wasn't cooling pipes gas within pipes though, so maybe the additional pumps will serve you better - I was using the worts themselves as the pumps.

Nice build though bud, hope it works out for you :)

I see that you are redirecting almost half of your oxygen back into the electrolyzer chamber and only one of the gas pumps is getting the oxygen out of the module. Your electrolyzer will overpressurise and be a lot less efficient. For one electrolizer to run reliably at near full efficiency, it needs two gas pumps working all the time to get the gas out, with no interruption.

You could try sending the oxygen from the topmost pump directly to your base instead. I use the same electrolyser setup, in a 3 x 7 room with the filter inside the room. It can sustain up to 9 dupes if one of them have diver's lungs. :3

Also the oxygen is getting colder because you probably are producing too much of it for your 3 dupes and it is staying longer in the pipes. If you eventually get the oxygen out faster I guess the temperature inside might stop going down because of the higher volume of oxygen to cool.

I like my setup. It does use a lot of energy but provider oxygen out at 4C. Energy is not a problem as far as I can see. Ventilation system going to all room dups use, so they always have fresh cool oxygen that maintains the temperature in the base. Only need one heat absorbing plant.

A top room filled with hydrogen.

BTW, how to show steam cloud images inside the post?

I did not try yet, But I probably even do not need heat absorbing plant, water going try before going to electrolyzer may be enough cooling.

Today i had my ongoing 20 dupe colony build this setup (with real dupe sweat and my fails) with slight and other necessary modifications.

I got the full output going into 2 pipes only, 1-3 and 2-3. This was an afterthought, as i originally planned 3 pipes, may eventually change it to something else if necessary. I had no issues running 2 main pipes only even with the old, stupid and obsolete setup (exosuit airlocks have their own individual o2 supply), so guess ill stick with it for now.

There were some concerns about my idea of routing the top pumps to the bottom pumps, as it reduces efficiency, but that has a purpose. 3 Hydros is more then enough for 20 dupes, also accounting for how much time they spend outside the airlocks, its easier to passive cool down everything if they run less often, and generate less heat.

Ill be honest, building something in debug and making it work in a real game sometimes doesnt go as expected, because ONI. Now just have to let it run and see what happens, After it settled down from the vacuuming and priming high temps, things look pretty chilly inside. Temps inside went all way down to -10c till i built the extra vents, but now it seems like it wants to reach more reasonable temps.

Thank you, hope it does :)
