Groups of trolls invading servers and then kicking everyone out.

I don't think I have ever been so angered by anything in this game ever before.

So I was playing on one of the Klei servers this evening. Things were going well, we made it to winter and things were looking up. Then all of a sudden, three players enter the game. Out of nowhere, there is a vote to kick one of the four or so individuals that I had been playing with. The rest of us were pretty confused since we had all been working together amicably. We kept voting against it of course, but it kept coming up, until somehow that person was kicked. Then another vote kick was initiated to remove yet another of remaining players, and they got kicked too. It was then I realized the three that had just joined were ganging up to kick us all out one by one. Of course, with their numbers, after somehow getting rid of the first player, they had the majority and were able to kick the rest of us. Eventually we were all tossed out and there was nothing we could do about it—the server was theirs.

I had to walk away for a few minutes since I was so frustrated thanks to these trolls. At first, I thought they had kicked us all out so they could take over our base and all that. But when I checked the Klei servers when I got back, they had let the world regenerate.

But the real kicker? (No pun intended.)

I joined another Klei server in hopes of starting fresh. Everything was fine, two other players had joined me and we were minding our own business. And then guess which three players joined all at the same time? That's right, the same three trolls that had joined that first server and kicked us all out of it. With evident glee, they proceeded to kick out the other two players before finally kicking me out as well. Maybe they saved me for last both times since I was vocal about my anger and that probably only fed the troll flame. Regardless, they succeeded yet again. I checked soon after, and they had left that server to (I assume) move onto the next one. As soon as I reconnected, the world was already being regenerated.

Has anyone else dealt with trollish behaviour like this? It's the first time I've come across this tactic in particular. I honestly don't understand how some people derive so much joy from ruining other people's fun. But really, I can't think of anything that can prevent this from happening when a group of people band together and use their numbers to their advantage so that the vote kick passes no matter what. Obviously there are answers, like hosting your own closed server. But the fact that they can just enter any old server with the vote kick function and boot out all the players that might have already established themselves is infuriating to say the least.

Yes its one guy and a few bots, and there is little we can do about it right now, unfortunately.

They only seem to strike at the offical servers, so try somewhere not offical for a while?

Yep I've dealt with this. Just leave the server before the vote kick initiates. System is completely useless and won't kick you if you're not in the server when it passes.

 

Edit: It should go without saying tho that there is no way to "dodge" the world being voted to regenerate so if that happens you're SOL. Klei refuses to let the community know if they're even going to change this system so we're probably stuck with this broken garbage :).

It is really starting to feel this way, I'll be honest.

There was sooo many threads of people complaining about those trolls and this system. A lot people gave a lot suggestions and feedback, yet, nothing changed and servers are still being ruined by some miserable kido and his bots.

I wonder how many more casual players quit the game for good after something like that happened to them.

 

But yeah, at this point I stopped hoping and believing anything will change in this matter. The only hope I have is that Klei really sticks to their development plan and that now they are focusing on new reign updates so they are are busy with that. But I can't imagine applying few simple fixes to voting system would take too much time, like preventing kick dodge, adding cooldown between votes or stopping fresh spawns from voting.

Doesn't matter what the dev do, how they change the game, if you play on unattended server, then that is the kinda of things you gona run into.

It's sad that the only advice that can be given in terms to combat this problem is "oh well look for another server", yeah with the combination of all these garbage mods and the fact that servers can have bad ping and so many other factors we just need more things to limit where we can play the game. Still, no acknowledgement on the fact that this system is 200% more bad than good.

The main issue is with server management. Votekick along other voting function are just tools for the admin. In a server with good management, players can report vote kick trolls and get those players banned. The rest of the players can continues to rely on vote kick for when the admin isn't available. That being said, being able to dodge the votekick isn't nice and should be fixed.

The Klei's official server in my region has one of the worst connection stability. Even if it is 100% troll free I won't consider playing on it.

I'm just going to go out on a whim here and say that the addition of this voting system in such a primitive and broken state is what gave the trolls their "boner" because they realized that there is now more finesse to griefing than just using a torch and a hammer. I don't doubt that these threads are probably making them all very happy but the fact of the matter is is theres no better way to reach out to Klei than to make these countless threads, as this is all up to Klei's decision now otherwise the reality of it will be many less servers to play on than there already were.

Right but the issue here is that what they tried to change and add in actually made the game worse, and this is quite obvious with the amount of threads / people who are complaining not just about griefers griefing, but about griefers using this system that we have now to take their nonsense to a whole new level.
