Beta for PC Players Only

Recommended Posts

I am really frustrated with your choice to not include anyone in the beta who hasn't played a lot on Steam. I find that to be unfair, illogical, and honestly just plain stupid. I have never seen another beta use those restrictions and it makes absolutely no sense. Why would anyone want to play DST on both console and steam anyway? Steam has access to mods, dedicated servers, and clearly will get a lot more of your attention since it has taken you 2 years just to port DST over to consoles.

The explanation that it is because you have such a short time and want people to be able to spot bugs also makes no sense. 6 weeks is not a short beta. In fact, it is one of the longest betas I have ever heard of. Why do you need so much more time for a beta as opposed to AAA games with serious levels of online players? Why do you believe that only people who have played copious hours on another platform would be able to spot a bug?

Bottom line: You have taken years to get this port out. During those years, you shamelessly announced another DLC coming to PS4 with no release date in sight. You have decided only PC players opinions will matter about the console version of this game anyway. You have shown a lack of concern towards console players which is ironic because I think DS being given on PS plus years ago was one of the reasons for the mainstream success of your game. But thanks for coming out with a mobile version of your game while it took years for you to port DST. Hope you made a lot of money

there is going to be another wave of codes and all they wanted was people that can spotted bugs and i have spotted a lot of bugs before so they can make a good game and i found a few bugs on console in the first day on beta so don't be mad they just want the experienced people to fix there game

I mean you could always just wait until it's available to purchase and it get it that way?

But really now they wanted "professionals" to test out the game in case they needed people getting in the later parts of the game say day 500 or the ruins and seeing if certain mechanics worked out.

Hi there, welcome to the forums! I can tell you're disappointed with the way this is being introduced, but some of your understandings about development are a bit off-base for this particular situation.

Klei is a privately owned indie company. They're not Blizzard or EA, they're not churning out AAA games to tens of millions of players, nor do they have hundreds of employees divided into strict teams for each game. IIRC from past posts by Jamie, the CEO, they have less than 100 people working for them, maybe even less than 50. They're an open and inclusive company, where employee participation is encouraged across all projects, although certain employees will be considered a main project manager/lead to ensure everything stays on-track.

I say all of this to give you an idea of what game development looks like for them. There aren't 100 developers assigned to one game, and 50 people doing QA for the each team. There's like, 15 people in total for each game. By extending this free beta test out to the community, they're pretty clearly showing that they don't want this release to take as long as it did with PC to leave early access. 6 weeks is nothing compared to 2-plus years.

As to why it's being granted for previous PC players, it's because they're most familiar with the game. Being familiar with the game means you know how to re-enact known and common scenarios as well as rare and uncommon scenarios. It's those rare and uncommon scenarios, where hidden bugs may exist, that Klei is asking us to find. Sony has EXTREMELY strict requirements for their games, and it MUST be of a certain quality before they'll allow it on their platform. The longer it takes to meet those requirements, the longer the full PS4 release will take.

Plenty of gamers use multiple platforms to play the same game. Your experience of not wanting to play on both is yours, and valid, but there are already numerous people showing that they're 100% willing to pay and play on both. If you're unhappy with the lack of modding/customization available for Playstation, I'd suggest you take it up with Sony... Klei can't change that.

What do you mean they disregard console players? They're actively developing console versions of their games! God forbid they make sure the game is stable on the first platform they release it on before bringing it to another. Would you honestly prefer to play a broken game for 6 years on both PC and PS4 because they launched (unique and separate) buggy code on both at once? Do you want them to over-extend themselves and abandon projects because they're so divided?

Klei is asking for our help. Instead of supporting them in their new venture, and being excited that they're expanding, you're rejecting them because it doesn't suit what you want. That's some gross entitlement right there. Imagine if you asked your friend for help moving, and instead of being like, "sorry dude, would totally help but I just can't do it that day", he instead said, "F you, my other friends would never ask for help, you're totally weak and ineffective since you can't just do it yourself in one day".

'Cause that's what you just said. To all of our favorite developers, artists, team leads, and execs. You're not going to find a lot of love here from that rant.

I do agree with you on one point though. I hope they make a lot of money too!

@SeanTheBear-

We are still doing for the DST beta. We’re just getting ready for a second phase. In the first Phase we needed people who already had Klei Accounts / Have played DST on PC.

If you registered yesterday and have not received an email already, you should re-register again as we are just getting ready to accept some non PC players to help out too! If you didn’t get an email from the first batch, it was likely due to not meeting PC / Steam past experience requirements we needed first.

If anyone here is interested in the beta they can sign up here: ps4beta.kleientertainment.com

The point of making it exclusive to experienced players is to have people play who already know what they're doing and can distinguish whats broken and what needs fixing. I know you're upset that you're unable to participate but nevertheless, the game will be done in 6 weeks.

These things take time and effort, considering they only have like 3-6 people doing all the coding.

Because some people have terrible PCs but would still would want to play, such as myself.

You clearly don't know anything about Klei or the effort they put in everyday, this is nothing more then a clear case of "Saying something without doing all the research".

I feel your frustration dude but at the same time Klei is trying to make the best game they can with their limited resources for funny enough, gamers like you.  Have faith in the process man and hang in there

I wanted to address this specifically cause this is huge and important.  When DST first was released in its beta there was a HUGE influx of new players who have never played Don't Starve before.  The forums bug report section pretty much went like this for about 50% of the bugs reported:

Player reporting bug:  Hey found this bug!

Players who are familiar with Don't Starve:  Thats not a bug its a natural game mechanic.

Klei in short is probably trying to avoid this again and speed up the testing process by using players familiar with all game mechanics.  I know several people have already stated this above but here is just a small explanation of where this logic lies and may have come from.  Hope this helps dude.
