Snake oil is a cute joke. The problem I have with it is that it does not stack in inventory. Later in the game, when snakes from a den keep fighting other mobs, snake oil naturally accumulates. I'd like to be able to clean it up, but that becomes a ridiculous effort since the snake oil does not stack in the inventory.

Separately, and less importantly, since the topic is snake oil, I'd like to suggest the joke to be extended. I think it would be appropriate, and funny, if the players could become snake oil salespeople. This could be simply achieved by having the Wildbores (and Pigs) accept snake oil given to them. When they are given one, they should do the happy pig dance, or at least comment about how the like the player character. This wouldn't (/shouldn't) befriend them or produce manure, it is just there for the purpose of the joke.

It is also possible to extend the idea above: they could have a chance to actually pay for the snake oil given to them, with either rot (20%), seashells (5%) or dubloons (0.1%). But this gives a (very inefficient and not very meaningful) use for snake oil, however, still within the boundaries of exactly what snake oil is.

Wait, so whats the joke? Can you explain more about what the hell is this snake oil supposed to mean?

Snake oil is an expression that originally referred to fraudulent health products or unproven medicine but has come to refer to any product with questionable or unverifiable quality or benefit.

Think of some classic wild west story where some salesman claims drinking some product improves your eyesight , relieves pain, etc but really is just stuff that doesn't do anything. The joke with snake oil is that it looks like something that would do something but really is just completely useless.

On the contrary, giving the Pigmen the snake oil SHOULD make them your friend! +25 naughtiness.

I thought about this too. 25 seems high, given killing them outright gives far less, but this action of tricking semi-intelligent beings should be naughty. I didn't add it to the original post because now this becomes actually useful. Still, it is a rather rare item, so maybe that's okay? Or maybe they wouldn't accept more than one in a given amount of time, that may work too.

well joke is fine but it should have a use. I mean totally useless item does not make any sense for this game (i mean all items got some use in the game except this item). at least it should be used somewhere like altar of snackrifice or give a fuel value so that it can be used instead of some fuels.. It does not have to be a really high fuel value but at least something like twigs.. so stackable snake oil with real fuel value

It's an easter egg, of course it makes sense for it to have no use. Even some of the comments in the code say they don't want it to be useful. Nothing more than a joke, just like the Powder Cake.

"--Used for snakeoil. We don't want it to actually do anything."

It does have a 0 fuel value. While it is not providing you any benefits, fire pits or chimineas provide an easy way to dispose of excess snake oil. Or rather they would have, if we could collect the ones laying around in one go.

not really like that.. It is currently not functional.. That does not mean it will stay like that. Here. It is pretty much like divining rod in dst.

That's because its ability to cure poison is intentionally disabled, thus not being consumed.

 inst:AddComponent("poisonhealer")
   inst.components.poisonhealer.enabled = false

for now :). never know the future.

It's more or less meant to be a joke to people who dig into code to see if it actually had anything of relevance, otherwise the poisonhealer code wouldn't be there.

yeah. but that does not imply they wont add some codes that would make it useful. It is still being developed and they listen community I witnessed this alot..

For example, monkey drops were alot I complained about that in the forums, a lot of people were against that but in the end they changed, now monkeys drop either banana or morsel.

They explicitly state they don't want it to do anything in the code. Most people agree with the gag and it should just stay as an easter egg. The game is also feature complete at this point.

well klei were claiming that skins would not be marketable but they changed their mind. So everything is possible. This is a topic and everyone got their opinion. You may not like it but a lot of people want it to have a use as u can see from the poll. Feature complete game got still changes like poison duration and such. They will not add a new item. They will change its function if they want or if people wants.

Also if you say powder cake is useless then you got no idea about the game...

Like Snakeoil, it's a joke. Specfically an inside joke in the Klei office.

It gives 0 hunger, 0 sanity, and damages you by 3 health points. It's useless for food purposes. Only use I can possibly think about is luring certain mobs, or killing yourself. Both of those have better ways.

well i am aware it is a joke but it should have a use even it is not important. I am not expecting to get a benefit out of a joke, i am aware it is a joke but at least make it consumable so we can drink to despawn. or give to pigs for something not important. put to fire to get 2 seconds of burn.

powder cake is a crucial item for merms, pigs and globbers. Keep pigs outside put a powder cake. They stay outside. easy kill for globbers which is really nice to have cuz tons of free and easy meat.. powder cake and this item cannot be compared. Powder cake has a real use and its benefit is better than most traps in the game where u can use lotta resources. You cannot even consume an item why? snake oils cannot be consumed? they just do nothing but they are consumable. It can be used to fool wildbores.. Could be used as some sort of powdercake for wildbores but with really different mechanics (not copy paste). or to distract primeapes until one of them drinks it etc..
