Steam Boat

10 Cut stone, 6 Gears, 8 Charcoal, Alchemy Engine

A boat with no sail or light slots. High durability (900?). Has a chiminea on deck. The speed depends on how high the flames are in the chiminea . Speed = 1 for no fire (just so that you don't get stranded), 3 for tier 1 (< log raft), 5 for tier 2 (= raft), 7 for tier 3 (= cargo boat with featherlite), 9 for tier 4 (=armored boat with ironwind). The chiminea provides heat and light, can be used to cook food.

Like all the boat suggestions but this recipe needa to be changed. Cut Stone might not make much sense for any boat frankly, even a steam one.

I would suggest something along these lines:

8 boards, 2 gears, Ironwind (and if allowed a 4th item, that would be 3 limestone)

Sea Mine

Environmental object. Rare, generated on the Beach Biome close to shore.

Pretty much what you're imagining. Large spherical metal ball with protrusions.

Explodes when hit or when something gets close to it, dealing 300 Damage, sets fire to things and showers the area in sand and rocks like an open Krissure. Leaves behind a deep turf-unit sized crater. After 10 days this crater will become a tidal pool which can be fished from.

Tactics for dealing with it may include staying the heck away, hitting it with a ranged weapon or tricking another creature into walking nearby,

Wilson: "I probably shouldn't touch that,"

Willow: "I want to be here when that thing goes off!"

Wickerbottom: "The legacy of a war at sea."

Wigfrid: "The helm of a fire giant?"

Maxwell: "I'll let someone else have this."

I had a vague idea to address the superfluity of gears in SW.

Time Pirates

The enemies of the Chess Navy, who will pay a modest bounty for slaying their foes.

Appearing in their own setpiece, always adjacent to the sea. Some kind of Pirate Tavern or Cave maybe.

The Time Pirate(s) themselves may be clockworks or perhaps some kind of upright squid-headed thing resembling the Yaarctopus. Either way, you can give them gears and they'll give you dubloons in return for a 1-1 exchange.

Perhaps giving them gears eventually leads to some kind of clockwork pirate on the seas? Or maybe the Time Pirate is building something like a time machine or clock tower.

If we go for the time machine idea, maybe overuse of their services causes time to go a bit screwy for a while. EG: Subsequent day is a complete mess of Day-Dusk-Day-Night-Dusk-Day-Night time sequences. Or the Moon phases start going backwards.

Sieling Fan

Hold back the rain!

4x Planks, 1x Electrical Doodad, 1x Turbine Blade. Alchemy Engine Tier.

A tall cylindrical structure with supporting struts capped by a whirling turbine blade pointing at the sky.

Blocks rainfall and strong wind in a 3-turf radius and also prevents flood pools forming within the same area. Unlike the Palm Tree Hut it does not provide shade from overheating.

Captain's Log

Better it than you.

1x Captain's Hat, 1x Logs, 1x Meat (Raw) Science Machine tier. Combat Tab.

A tall player height log with a crude face drawn on it, a hunk of meat nailed to the front and the captain's hat perched on top.

Acts as a decoy, luring hostile enemies to attack it instead of the player.

Carried around as a portable item until planted/set afloat, where it will be fixed in place until it gets destroyed.

Wildbores and Pigs will be friendly towards it, saying "You smell real nice" and "Friend tell funny jokes."

Bunnymen will be hostile towards it and regard it as meat in the player's inventory.

Speargun Shot

One use is all you need.

1x Bamboo, 1x Flint. Science Machine Tier. Combat Tab.

A bamboo pole with a notch cut in the end to fit a flint spearhead,

One-use ammunition for the Spear Gun. Can't be used in melee and breaks after use but can be stacked up to 10.

Poo-Proof Poncho

It's still not terribly pleasant.

2x Cloth, 1x Rope, 4x Snakeskin. Alchemy Engine Tier. Dress Tab.

An inelegant beige poncho with brown stains on it.

Reduces sanity damage from Prime Ape/Splumonkey manure attacks by 80%. Survives 20 hits.

(Suggestions for alternative materials would be welcome.)

Pruning Shears

Snip Snip!

1x Crab, 2x Sticks, 1x Grass. Science Machine Tier, Tool Tab.

Crude gardening shears with blue crab claws on the end of a pair of sticks, pivoted in the middle.

Makes picking grass, sticks and berries faster by turning the blurring hands motion into a simple picking-up motion. 100 uses.

Nice!

Another little use for gears:

Fish Tank

For the invasion of the surface world.

16x Sand, 2x Gears, 4x Limpets. Alchemy Engine tier. Food Tab.

Clear glass tank with a little sand, a couple of limpets stuck to the side and an ornamental castle.

Can be used to keep certain sea creatures alive indefinitely for later use like the existing Bird Cage. This is restricted to sea creatures that can survive in a player's inventory, such as Crabs, Wobsters and Jellyfish.

Save a wobster until you have butter!

Fish Tank

Yes, please. The sand cost would imply it's a big rectangular tank, but I imagine it as a bowl one. Additionally, I would like to milk my pet jellyfish for jellyfish jelly: an alternative form of sweetener.

Alternatively, it could be Identical to palm leaf hut, just with big radius of effect and no effect on winds and flood. It could even stop working then flooded.

My own ideas:

Coconut Helmet

Coconut, Vines, Palm Leaves. Always available. Fight Tab.

A coconut vaguely shaped like roman legionnaire helmet , with a palm leaf crest.

Low absorbance and durability, but absorbs 100% of damage from falling coconuts. Could decrease chance of Palmguard's appearance.

Speedboat

Boards, Snakeskin, Shark fin. Alchemy Engine tier. Nautical Tab.

A speedboat, which looks similar to sea hound. Has a shark fin on a back.

Speedy, but has low durability.

Weather Machine

Turbine, Gears, ???. Alchemy Engine tier.  Science Tab.

Idea for alternative use of turbine. Choose a type of weather; the machine will change the weather to chosen one, as long as it has fuel. Works for short amount of time off screen. Very fuel hungry.

This one is really good idea.

I like this, but maybe instead of reducing the chance of their appearance it confuses them into neutrality against you. (Until you attack them or start chopping trees again.)

As a low tech alternative to the Monolith...

Scary Monkey Pole

Keep those pests away from your stuff.

1x Silly Monkey Ball, 2x Bamboo, 1x Meat (Raw) Science Machine Tier.

Resembling other Head-on-a-stick items, this is a Silly Monkey Ball on a pole which attracts flies to buzz around it. The smiley banana is turned to a frown.

Prime Apes (And Splumonkies) will flee in fear from this object within a three turf radius. This can be used to keep them away from crops or even deployed in a ring to act as a fence. (If aggravated, they'll still throw poo at you.)

Something to help with the flooring.

Tigershark Rug

A little goes a long way.

1x Tigershark Gills, 10x Silk. Alchemy Engine Tier. Structure Tab.

Produces a full stack of 10 Tigershark Rug Turfs, which is of course a Tiger Stripe Pattern.

Has the effect of producing a lot of turf at once out of a relatively small amount of material. good for flooring new bases quickly.
