The Tail O' Three Cats

Recommended Posts

So, what is this thing?

A weapon:

  • with 75 uses (vs 150 spear uses)
  • with double the range of a spear
  • with 20% less damage than a spear

Which has the ability to supercrack on attack:

  • 5% chance against bosses
  • 20% chance against monsters
  • 25% chance against any other creatures

What is a supercrack?

A 14 units range area effect that makes all enemies caught in it drop their target, and look like they took a hit if they drop it.

Some people say it tames beefalo faster. Well, it does not. Damaging beefalo only makes it lose domestication points.

So it's actually counterproductive.

For now it's all fine and dandy until we see the recipe cost:

  • 3 Cat Tails (33% chance drop from a Catcoon)
  • 3 Tentacle Spots (20% chance drop from a Tentacle, 40% chance drop from a Tentapillar)

So not only we have to mass murder catcoons and wait until next Spring (with a 15 days minimal waiting time), we have to mass murder tentacles (non renewable tentacles, unless you have a willing Wickerbottom somewhere, and her book also requires spots) for that low chance of spots.

We can also go tentapillar hunting. However, we only have a few of them (10) disperse all over the caves, instead of the single player swamps where you could find many of them in the same biome.

I would rather stock up on rain coats, instead of whips. Everybody likes a brand new coat, especially when you are entering a server during Spring, or you want to venture into the caves during Winter/Spring. And not only that: in PvP servers, people would be at a disadvantage if they went for a whip, since their enemies could stock up more armor or more damaging weapons like a Ham Bat, or an Ice Staff, while the other guys get the whips (if they can even get one).

It's a shame that this interesting weapon is tossed away because of its cost.

So what do?

Well, here's where we do the talking.

How about a recipe change?

Maybe 3 Cat Tails, 1 Tentacle Spot, 1 Tentacle Spike?

Or maybe just ditch the spots and leave it at 3 Cat Tails, 1 Tentacle Spike?

Maybe just make it more cheap like 1 Cat Tail, 1 Tentacle Spot, 1 Tentacle Spike?

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to make it more cheap, and then make it more expensive if people start mass producing it.

Either of your recipe changes seem good to me, I agree with you, it IS really expensive, regarding its uses.

Am I the only one thinking those recipes are still too expensive? It's useful only in limited situations, so I think 1 catcoon tail + tentacle spike/tentacle spot is enough

The whip adds a really interesting dynamic to combat even with just the small range increase alone. The uses on the whip is entirely too small to be worth 12 tentacles on average, though. Please please please consider the crafting recipe changes. 3 Cat tails is still too much, in my opinion.

What are Beefalo domestication points. Please someone keep me young.

If I'm not mistaken, the more grass or fruits you feed a Beefalo the more his domestication points will go up. I believe once it reaches a treshold, he'll become fully domesticated. Domestication hasn't been fully implemented yet, though :p

When you give food to a beefalo, you raise its hunger.

As it digests the food you gave to him, it gains domestication points.

which is why nothing happens when

occurs.

Beefalo reaches 100% domestication and nothing happens, there are no code lines that say "ok, now domesticate".

There's another important discussion to be had regarding tendencies, obedience, and domestication. Getting close to 100% domestication is a excessively long, expensive, and tedious task. Beefalo riding is heavily lacking usefulness. A rider can't beat a guy with a cane, a rider has roughly the damage of a spear, a rider gets bucked off fast, and if a rider tries to tank hits, the obedience will drop and the beefalo will buck.

However, all of this is a work in progress and should be focused on later.

Right now, we can make the whip something players would greatly enjoy but are limited by the cost.

I agree, is quite expensive, but I think that the recipe is ok just like that, if the whip was cheaper  we could make more of these and it wouldn't be a special or unique weapon, a better range is useful but I think that the whip should be more strong, at least as a spear or a bit strongest, or even help with the domestication

Um, what? If you make the whip more expensive/leave it as it is it's not going to be worth the effort to make it and if you increase its damage then you'll have jacked Wolfgangs running around landing guaranteed high-damage blows on other players.

Weighing things:

  • if the recipe were to be changed to use tentacle spikes, then the damage the whip deals should reflect that but:

  • the tentacle spot is rare and non-renewable (but yeah, catcoons and I think tumbleweeds?) so that should account for the added AoE but then we think of the 3 catcoon tails... since it's in the name of the thing itself, they would have to rename it if we were to decrease the number of coon tails used. May I suggest rope?

There should be more points to this but I am using my limited break at work... can someone pick this up? <__<

Then make it

1 Cat Tail, 1 Pig Skin, 1 Stinger

and name it Tale O' Three Tails.

Unless somebody can come up with a pun like the current name for

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_o'_nine_tails

Or leave it at

3 Cat Tails, 1 Tentacle Spot

and increase its uses to those of a spear, or maybe a bit more, have x1.5 spear uses.

I like this. I think more uses should make it good enough and worth it. Actually a weapon I may consider using in combat, because if the uses are so limited then so become the occasions you will use it
