Small thing that could be improved

Recommended Posts

as i is an antecipated access i know there will be improvements but somethings i think it would be nice to take a look at:

1- The is way too much bamboo and vines while twigs are quite rare. now for real there is TOO much bamboos and vines on the jungle biome, it's kinda unecessary, reducing the "spawn" of these 2 and letting twigs to spawn on jungles would be nice (that is pretty much for the early game, can be quite annoying have loads of flints in the invent and not a single twig in sight, though you can still get them from trees in marshes)

2- Reduce the number of Apes that spawn on a single jungle or limit the number of apes that can follow the player at one time, i got followed by 11 of these #@$#@!$. I Know they probally were made to be annoying but the number of apes in a single jungle can cross the line

3- Volcano Season... please do something about it! High amount of drugs were used in the process of creation of this "Season'

I think maybe the problem is that there are too many jungle biome.

It's a jungle, why would it need to have less bamboo or vines, seriously. Is there too much sand on the beach too ? :geek:

I think twigs are plentiful on beaches so you just need to go to the right biome to get the right stuff, ressources shouldn't be all concentrated on one specific biome.

And you'll probably be able to tweak this on the World settings !

I think the map is just too big. The sea is vast and there are too many empty islands with only sand and jungle biome.

There are a few things an individual want to find like the Yaarctopus, Wooden Platform Thing, Slot Machine or Volcano (for task in future patch).
But the only way to find those objects base on luck. All of those things is random spawn and there is no clue on how to find them. This is bad game design, some players play almost a year without found a single gears. It's not their fault :frown:

In the vanilla I could guess Pig King location base on map layout and brick road. Although things like clockwork complete random spawn, however they are not unique so the chance to meet is pretty high.

IMO I think we need something like ocean circulation. It will lead player to important objects and increase boat movement speed. This will affect to player's base location decision and reduce the time travel on sea (which is boring :grumpy:) .

1. The bamboo problem will be solved when the Granda (Great Panda) gets implemented, all your bamboo are belong to him and he will murder you if you try to pick any of it.

The vines are great to dig them up and use the vine saplings to get your campfire at max level, you don´t need many vines, so you can just burn half of it, so you dont waste logs for your fire.

2. Burn just all of there spawners down, than chop jungle trees until you have 5 or more bananas, befriend 5 apes and like Ken Watanabe would say: "LET THEM FIGHTERUUU!"

3. Just play until the end of monsoon season and reset the game, start a new world in calm season and pretend that there is no such thing as a fourth season until it is patched. ^^

5. Have fun. ^^

Exactly! You could guess the location of the pig king because of the road or his spawn in the birch forest (ROG) and that was boring as hell, because you would know every time where he is after maybe 1-5 days.

Personally I like getting surprised by those special things: brane plant, yaaarctopus, volcano, slot machine, etc. way more than knowing after a few days exactly where they are, that keeps the adventurerer spirit fresh.

But...I guess "Jedem das Seine."

Yes they should put all the content on your starting island, exploring is no fun, especially in Don't Starve. At the very least the entire map should be revealed day 1 and you should be able to teleport instantly on every location, like quick travel or stuff like that. Bad game design indeed.

On a more serious note, my heart bleeds when I hear someone say that the map is definitely too big.

I think Don't Starve is all about exploring and discovering things little by little, not all at once, maybe even not in a single run. There's really no need to rush all the new content in my opinion.

I am not entirely shure, but I think you are....sarcastic......eh? ^^

Sarcastic yes but not trying to be mean, I just think that exploration (and the feeling of discovery which comes with it, when you stumble on unexpected but amazing stuff by pure chance etc.) is a big part of the gameplay so calling it a "bad game design" hurts my brain a little.

People are so used to the simple old ways of exploring in the main game - all you need to is walk along the roads to travel from one biome to another; head to the rock biome to get gold nuggets and follow the paved road to the pig king

Now people are kind of frustrated because there ain't roads to follow anymore in Shipwrecked, and you come across the jungle/beach biomes over and over again as you travel among the islands

Yes, I feel the same about this. It keeps the world fresh.

1 - Bamboo is one of the most important resources, so it helps having a lot of it.  There are lots of twigs around, especially in the magma biomes.

2 - The apes are annoying, but eventually manageable.  If you can't deal with them just avoid them.

3 - They have acknowledged that volcano season is currently being tweaked.

I don't see that lack of twigs, you can find them in beaches, rocky biome and chopping mangrove trees!

About the map, yeah it's tiring to sail with no direction and hope to find an island... but I guess that's the intention? I don't know, the feeling of a castaway, with no sense of direction, lost... However, as someone already suggested here in the forums, I'd like to see water streams, similar to roads, but only helping you move towards a specific direction.

I think jungle should but larger in size but be less in count.

@Hundkerchief You are overacting my post. What I mean in that post is if there is something so important affect on core game mechanics like gears, the game should give player a clue to find them or aleast made them not that hard to find.

Sometime the Coral Reef area contain Wooden Platform Thing is very small, only 2-3 screen size, very easy to miss. I want to have some kind of sea road or aleast a sign to make player know they are nearby.

Another thing I want to say is everyone have they own way to play game. That's why we have world custom feature and mod. Please don't make mean comment like this anymore. Thanks :lemo: .

Yes they have planned to make gears more common, with, Ô God please the praised Clock-o-dial, and one kind of mechanical tick.

There are often sounds to warn you that something is nearby and not to miss it, for example pigs/boars make sound even when they are not onscreen etc.

Actually I noticed the Wooden Platform Thing thanks to the sound Sailors-SeaHorses made, even before seeing them. I find it subtle enough, and I just don't want too much obvious signs (as you seem to want), which may spoil the surprise for me.

As I said I wasn't attending to sound mean of course, and World Custom Settings will fix much of the differences of opinion.

Really? I've had trouble finding coral, gold, and flints in that order, but never twigs. You usually have to abandon your 'starter' island pretty early to find a better base, but that's fine, it's Shipwrecked, we're meant to explore the oceans! I like that jungles have their own unique flora - and fauna, although I agree there are sometimes a few too many monkeys.

Considering that you can dig up twigs and replant them without fertilizer, I don't think there need to be any more, they're not THAT rare.

As for world size, I think it's great.  The old version, it was very easy to just border-run the entire world until you'd found where everything was, knew exactly the best place to set up, no surprises.

But now, I don't think it's really possible to fully scope out the world in the first 10 days, and that's great.  It maintains a sense of mystery for awhile yet, with regards to where certain things are, and where the optimal base setup is.  I think the wide-open map without simple player exploration routes is the best thing about SW.

I do like the idea of water streams, not to guide us straight to things like pig roads but because such things exist IRL and it would make the ocean more interesting and varied. You could indeed use them as speeded up water roads (but only in one direction!) and they might divide the ocean into different biomes, the way the Gulf Stream affects the Atlantic. It might also be nice to have them running between (not necessarily very near, but parallel to) coastlines, to give a little guidance on where to find land, though generally I find following the shallow water all the way around leads to one narrow lane or bridge that takes you to another island.

And! (Klei take note...) You could have some sort of big monster fish that follows these waterways and is a specific danger only if you get in its path.

Also, I have to say - given that somewhere on every map is a GIGANTIC active volcano... this really should affect ocean currents in some way, right? That might be the one thing the water streams could lead to, if you follow them correctly - if we have to go sacrificing to this thing to prevent meteor death every season... (not that it is a problem once you uncover the thing, but still).

Oh i forgot to mention, they can be rare early game, is quite comom I begin in a small island with only 4 ~5 twigs in the beach, sure after you get all your stuff up you can get them without problem, but as the inicial island (at least for me) is quite small can happen to spawn almost none in the entire island.

Just a few thoughts:

1. A single beach Island often have 20~40 slapings so I think there is enough slapings in the game. Only that I have once start with an Island that only have 3 twigs but thats more like the RNG trolling me. Playing as Wendy I think 20~40 slapings in base is more than enough. Just need to get a miner hat and boat lantern asap and you will rarely have to craft any touch in the rest of the game.

2. Again as Wendy the apes are the easiest food source. Abigail alone can clear at least 2 apes huts at night. Not sure if the hut can be deconstruct with a hammer, but I have burn down and rebuild huts in my base.

3. Volcano Season.

On land, meteor kills endothermic fire AND abigail in one hit. Also I have had my boat full of loads of stuff destoryed while I am jumping off the boat to land. So the way it works pretty much means I have to stay in the sea as soon as the meteor start falling, until the eruption ends. I have get through the first volcano season season using thermal stone + chilled amulet + umbrella + Straw Hat. Thermal stone takes awhile to freeze and it won't last long enough (I use 2 stones and it last less than a day) and gear isn't that easy to find. Chilled amulet is not easily renewable. It seems to me the only way to survive in the long term is to get a watermelon farm going. Stay in the open sea during volcano eruption and use fashion melon to stay cool. Catch jelly fish for hunger. Eat banana pop and ect for sanity.

Considering that you can dig up twigs and replant them without fertilizer, I don't think there need to be any more, they're not THAT rare.

I agree.

However I think there should be more clockworks around and may be a few more slot machine as well. I spent most of my time trying to explore as much as I can and only able to find the slot machine and Yaarctopus right before second year Volcanic season. By then I have explored 80% of the map.
