Could Maxwell Change?

Recommended Posts

So I think it's very obvious that Maxwell loves Charlie. What I'm curious of is if (assuming she were somehow turned back into herself) Maxwell would be able to turn back into himself before he went really insane, and just be all around less "evil". Do you think he would be able to, or do you think he is too far gone? For what it counts, he obviously has a very strong mind

I don't think he is evil, just misunderstood. Lonely I am sure but not evil. Also he is my favorite playable character so I am a bit bias anyway. Its his "insanity" that gives him his perks. Plus I don't think he sees an issue with the way he is so I doubt he would want to change.

But with the William Carter pictures, when Charlies walks into his really creepy study room you can see things like symbols, runes, and the word "enough" scratched into the walls, which makes it look like Maxwell was trying to break away from the shadow magic. It seemed like he knew it was getting out of hand.

And on a related note, I thought I'd see you on here, LadyAzure. You seem like quite the Maxwell fan :D

I'm sure at heart Maxwell's a good guy but exposure to nightmare fuel and Them changed him. He's not exactly evil after he is freed but rather his emotions are smothered. He still gets humor off of things like seeing leftover skeletons and such, but still has sympathy for what happened to Charlie when you examine Codex Umbra.

Oh yes! I love his dapper style!  Maxwell and Chester are my favorites, besides I drew the picture of him playing fetch with Chester so he can't be all that bad. I still think on the grand scheme of villains he is not really evil inside.

There are plenty of non-evil villians, you can't even describe them as such. Here's some goodwilling antagonists that cross my mind:

Maxwell (duh)

King Koopa (Mario series, Proof)

That grey fox in blue pyjamas (You must not know his name, just that he's from a nintendo DS game)

The no-lips guy from Outlast (read his file)

Now, that list isn't anywhere close to as big as the list of evil and selfish protagonists, especially if you count the ones who knowingly serve evil or selfish main characters (for example that godess from Kid Icarus)

I really doubt that he wants to go back to being William Carter, but you could tell that he was horrified when he found out that Charlie had found his secret room. What I guess I'm asking is, do you think he would try to be a better person or at least tone it down a bit? I mean, some of his comments are just disturbing for a guy who is suppossedly just a little nuts. For example, when he examines a razor, he'll say "If only the world had a single throat". And on a side note, why does the game description say that Maxwell is a demon when the backstory and game itself shows that he isn't?

Yes he may say or think those things, but saying and doing are completly different. If given the chance to kill the world simantanesly I doubt he would go through with

It. Also there is no way he himself is a demon, maybe just an image of what others think about him.

True. Maybe he isn't quite as bad as he seems. Heck, maybe he likes to seem that way. As to the whole demon thing, I have no idea how, but even before I found out his backstory I was sure he was a magician. I like his quotes on bunnymen and rabbits

What I can tell from Maxwell he is a classic narcissist. He has many of the tell tale signs. Only out for his own needs, one sided conversation, well dressed, want to be the center of attention. Also they always think they are right. Maxwell shows all of these things, doesnt make him truly evil.

Honestly that's probably one of the best ways to describe him.

Yes my ex was a narcissist so I am quite familiar with it. They tend to think they are the most important and beautiful people on Earth, selfish and draining. However I still think Maxwell is my favorite, I just love his complexity.

People that don't finish adventure mode or don't dig into the backstory (which is on purposelessly told OUTSIDE the game) don't know that he's just a regular guy trapped under the influence of a higher being. They aren't going to know Maxwell's backstory without the internet.

While trapped though, he basically is a demon. The Nightmare Throne and general influence of Them grants him knowledge and evil power a normal person could not do, crossing dimensions and trapping people and such.
