Use of slurs?

Recommended Posts

I just lost this post due to shenanigans so I'm just going to post this image and questions marks I guess??

????????????????????????????

Long story short I did not speak even 3 words to this person and I am pretty offended? Why are people allowed to say stuff like that? Are people allowed to use other discriminatory language as well? Like I'm not even salty about dying I actually very much enjoyed the silly fight we had until he called me a *****. Jeez

Yes, people use slurs. I still don't see the problem here. I would post a tonne of "slurs" towards several members who I know here - but I'm not sure if that would get me warning points. If I put it in Spoilers, will I be safe? I'ma try.

SEGMENT REMOVED DUE TO BEING ROOD. PLZ FORGIVE ME, TITLE FAIRY. *Offers cookie of friendliness*

EDIT: Damnit, it got censored! Thanks Obama.

Another EDIT: Darn. I saw someone else do the spoiler thingy and thought I'd get away with it! Though, for some reason, the last one didn't get censored. Might wanna fix that.

Another, another edit: Removed the ROODs.

I guess he meant Willow... or did something happen that made him call you a female dog?

O___O

Such is the world... though you shouldn't let it get to you... :)

No, I was the Willow, actually. I cannot think of anything really? He killed me once, I wandering around as a ghost, world reset, and then apparently it was his mission to kill me. We had an interesting fight that was fun and then he called me that.

It's not that I shouldn't let it get to me. He shouldn't be allowed to say that. No one should. That's not a term that's appropriate to use to describe a woman. It is used as an act of violence against a woman when physical violence is not an option. That is its purpose. When someone is angry enough to cause physical harm to a woman, but cannot, they use that word.

If Klei bans long pig due to keeping things appropriate for children, I do not believe it is a far stretch to ask them to ban use of slurs, or at least consider a way to nip this issue in the bud.

I'm a glitter-sneezing ******.

Fidooop is a smegma-encrusted **** rag.

serjonsnow is a slackjawed dumb ****.

And my other friend who isn't on the forums, is a macho-headed sock fucker.

EDIT: Damnit, it got censored! Thanks Obama.

Those are friends, not strangers, and you know it is okay to use those words with those people. They are also not meant as true insults.

I am also not meaning curse words right now. I am talking specifically slurs, such as the one used and things of equal severity to, say, the n word.

No, I was the Willow, actually.

That's what I meant... what I was saying is that he thought of "Willow" as the female dog... not you...

But then again you did say that you had a fight so could you at least elaborate on what you were fighting about so I could get an idea of how to properly advise you... on?

O__O

You cannot control other people's behaviors, especially on the internet. Klei can add as many profanity filters as they want, but insults and rudeness are always going to be a part of online interactions like gaming. Nothing will change that, not even Klei. Get used to it.

So basically, you're saying that you want a game sensor for these words like it does in the forums? Like typing a slur would result in a * representation?

I know. I just like insulting myself and my friends. Jolly good fun, it is.

2. Well, to me, all cusses and insults towards someone else mean the same thing. Of course, you can't control what others say. And it could mean for a variety of reasons: They could be irate over something else, perhaps they meant it in a manner that wasn't supposed to offend, but that didn't really show in how they typed it, maybe there was a misunderstanding. Or, they could just be a rather nasty individual - such as myself! But censoring, profanity filters, and whatnot, will not stop someone from speaking their mind. Of course, if they are just nasty, a kick/banning system would be handy.

To be honest I was surprised it wasn't sensored like that already.

And since I can't figure out multiquotes on mobile, The fight was literally just. The world reset! We were scattering from base and he got the ice wand, made an axe, and attacked! I had been Wendy in the previous server. Then afterwards, a Wolfgang who had got caught in the crossfire asked what it was about, and then the dialogue in the screenshot happened.

@RobotAccomplice

I hope I spelled that right. Rudeness is fine, insults are fine, but there is a line and slurs cross it. Again, I'll compare to racial slurs. If any of the characters were not white, and someone was calling someone playing them discriminatory names because of their character's skin color, they've crossed a very serious line. There is no behavioral report system for this stuff in dst, likely because it would be flooded with complaints about griefing and people killing others on pvp servers. Right now, someone can be as discriminatory as they want. There is a line and it needs to be drawn because some people evidently cannot see it.

Sounds to me like that person may have just been salty themselves. Sometimes you should just let people vent out and ignore them. Chances are, there was no intended weight behind the slur. Just someone being frustrated.

And I'm not sure if the word stated above is especially discriminatory -- unless you're specifically calling a woman a B because she's a woman. But if you call a woman a B, a man a B or D, and anyone else either of the two, then I'm not so sure it's really, y'know, directed at the person's sex/gender. Just a word, quick to type and, in the right context, can be a powerful word.

Are you really so weak and frail you need to be protected from mean words on the internet?

Make a hugbox server where only compliments are allowed or something. I'm really tired of people like you trying to force censoring into video games and chat systems just because you can't handle reality. Quit being a child.

Yeah, but again, that doesn't make the behavior okay. Regardless of how much they may or may not have needed to vent, calling me a name like that is not an acceptable way to do so. Again, Klei does not allow slurs in server names and has actively stated that they want to create a relatively safe environment for younger players. An environment that does not even make an attempt to stop discriminatory language and behavior is not safe for younger players. While I can get over being called that word, the overarching issue is that he was allowed to call me that word at all.

@Flare2v

Apologies. I genuinely cannot find the multiquote on mobile and constantly editing posts is a lil ehhh to me

I'm not saying "don't censor the words." Just that, people will find ways to use those slurs regardless. You been on Club Penguin lately? Taking a walk around the place was a perfect example of how people will find loopholes. What I was more getting at, despite my horrible attempts at typing, was that there should be a -better- way of getting rid of people who are just nasty individuals. Though I' not sure what would work.

If someone's just slipping up in frustration or that, censoring would work fine. But if someone is just being a D, you gon' need a better system.

I honestly haven't found a multiplayer game that sensors everything in chat... O__O

I haven't found many games that censor anything at all. Which doesn't surprise me, since it's usually kida ranging from 8-14 on voice chat who have to fit in an F-bomb or an S-poop every second word. Though that might just be Australia, where "mate" is what you call people you don't like, and the C word is what you call your friends.

That was some lewd stuff on that game. Ech.

True, but at the same time, most mmos ban any curses on top of slurs, and the language is pretty fine. It also makes it immediately clear that, while there is a time and a place to say these kinds of things if you wish, this game is not it. You yourself just tried to drop curse words, and got censored. You immediately know, okay, not allowed, not gonna do that again.

And, again, curse words are nbd to me. Slurs are the issue.

And before anyone says the word used in this case is not a slur, I want to make it clear, as a woman who has experienced street harassment and has had to fend off assault. That word is used to make women feel worthless and afraid. That word is a threat. It is never okay to use that word, because that word implies violence. It is not just a curse word. It is a word used to show how little a man thinks of you and how much he wants to hurt you. And if a man uses that word to describe you you may very well never make it back home.

Edit:

Just saw your edit, and you do make a good point. I think it's probably just slips tbh, but I think it's still important to make it clear that like. Yo. That's not cool here. Take that language somewhere else. If they continue then that's an issue more linked to the grief issue, definitely, and could be solved similarly.

This is up to Klei. Personally I do not say any of the words we're talking about, and I'm content to leave it that way. I don't want to force my beliefs on someone else. I think a word filter would definitely make the game a lot more family friendly, but that's to protect impressionable young children. It's to prevent them from learning the words, not from being offended by them. Basically, you are the one who decides what offends you. Certainly some words are very good at offending other people and are said for that reason, but you don't need to be offended by them.

tl;dr  If Klei makes the decision to censor words, it should not be to avoid offending people. It should be to create a more child-friendly environment.

Again, on mobile, but imagine the image of that little girl from that taco shell commercial saying "Why not both?" is placed here instead of the text. Two birds one stone. They don't have to worry about people getting offended, and kids don't have those words normalized for them.
