Bush Hat: Effective against Hounds?

Recommended Posts

When Hounds come while the player is pretending to be a bush, I've noticed they don't ever despawn or just go away. It results in the player having spent a substantial time just sitting still unproductively, and a group of Hounds going around attacking everything in the surrounding world (who will likely find and attack the player again soon afterward). Is the hat just supposed to be a method of keeping the Hounds away from the player until day (in the case of a night attack, many Hound defense strategies are unusable at night) or getting them to aggro on nearby mobs?

The bush hat is usually used to hide during a bad time phase, which only makes sense if there is a better window of opportunity to be expected, as you said. It can also be used to hide from giants, pigmen, frog, etc passing by, although that is very stealth-orientated behavior.

I didn't know that about frogs. Frogs are my archenemy. O___O I thought bush hat was silly but now I'll try to make one ASAP.

Oh good lord...Frogs used to be my arch-nemesis too. For me, they resulted in more Adventure Mode deaths than anything else. I eventually learned to avoid aggroing them, but they just kept killing me!

And then one day...My inventory was clogged, so I dropped a trap next to my firepit. A frog came hopping over to me and I was like "NO! NOT AGAIN!" but then...it lept into the trap...and I had a moment of caveman inspiration.

And then i maniacally laughed for 10 minutes and never went hungry again.

The bush hat is good to hide in order to deflect an incoming hounds attack or what not, but you need to keep in mind that if there are no targets around for them to attack, then the hounds will stick right next to your bush and sniff it or roam around. With the insanity aura they got you will be forced to take action sooner or later, so best case scenario would be a Beefalo herd, place with lots of frog ponds, pig village, or what not.

Oh, needless to say to keep in mind the type of hounds that are attacking to prevent uncontrolled fires. :-)

I did that once, equipped a bush hat to hide from a pack of wolves. However it somehow glitched them and after I was able to have my beefalo pack kill them I could still hear them barking off in the distance like they were coming. My character would say, the hounds were coming but they never came. Ever, which some may be thinking that was good but I really needed some blue and red stones but with no hounds it became a problem.
