Can i make a dedicated server ?

Recommended Posts

Dedicated servers are coming soon. They are going to be tested with a few people first. But it should be available here in the next couple weeks. We'll have to see how the testing goes.

I've seen two password protected dedicated servers both owned by some guys named 'Digital Ocean'

Whats the scoop with them?

I'd assume that Klei is renting a virtual machine or cloud process or whatever from them to run the server.

Less-known, however, is the elusive Analog Puddle West...

What's the point of the dedicated server if you can run a server from your computer? I don't quite understand that. I'm assuming the two companies that are currently running the dedicated servers currently have better systems where it won't be laggy if they run it or is it so that you can have a world going all the time without you having to be in it all the time? Does the clock keep ticking if nobody is on, or does it temporarily stop when nobody is logged in it?

The key feature of a dedicated server is that it uncouples the hosting from the players. So no player has to host, the host can be a third party (you can host without playing on your server). The details of whether the clock keeps ticking or not are up to the game, but currently yes, it keeps ticking.

Because you can host without playing, it makes hosting less resource-intensive. So you can get better quality servers if they're dedicated, since the hosting computer isn't also doing all the graphics and such.

Ah, ok. That's what I figured. That's useful to know since I have so many computers in my house. I can use one of them as a dedicated server if I want better performance. Thanks.

Sooooo it's been a couple of weeks... How's the testing going?  :wilson_ecstatic:

Excited to get a dedicated server up and running.

you can start a server and when the game will let you choose a character to play - just minimize DST. the server will run with noone inside (other players will be able to join)

tested it with my girlfriend few hours ago.

only downside i see - you need another DST to play on this server yourself (unless you wanna join as a host)

There are several dedicated servers online as we speak.

Edit: Well, not that you can make them yourself yet...

Yeah, hoping to run my own

Good idea! Too bad I only got one key. Plus that only works if you don't have a character already started.

Actually, as JoeW said, only few people can test dedicated right now. If I remember correctly, I got mine last thursday. There is still many things to add in order to have an easy-to-use dedicated server. For now, you have to type commands in order to kick / ban, quite annoying if you have to kick a griefer quickly.

I've set up 2 dedicated servers :

- One on Amazon Cloud(like Klei's ones) for testing mods ("Diabu's Private Dedicated").

- Another one on my own dedicated machine (better configuration) called "Diabu's Dedicated Server" (the one with 20 slots). Everyone is welcome on this one :-)

I'm trying to know how many players it can handle without lags. And see if "massive" multiplayer is fun and playable.

I could host a dedicated server, IF ONLY MY WINDOWS SERVER HAD A VIDEO CARD > :(

Actually, the aim of the dedicated server is to remove any Rendering made by the client. On linux, it run in a shell, and it does not need any video card :)

So I guess that once dedicated servers will be available for Windows, you will be able to use your windows server
