Maxwell the Director mod server up - Come join me!

Recommended Posts

Congratulations to @Clwnbaby for being the first person to beat the maze, and doing it solo despite the fact I designed it to be tackled as a group!

So a few people have noticed I've been working on a project. It's a mod called Maxwell the Director for DST. The idea of this mod is that the host isn't so much a player, but someone who's shaping the world and the obstacles that the other players face. There's a lot of stuff I still want to do with it, but I've just finished the first parts of it and it should now be in playable form. Come join me, the server name is "Maxwell's Playground!"

I also have the More DST Characters and Damage Rebalance mods I wrote enabled. You don't need them to join, but More DST Characters will give you more character options and let you see Wendy, Wolfgang, and Maxwell, if they join.

Stuff that's in right now:

  • World gen is set to land loop, no branching, endless summer.
  • A trap around the spawn. You'll have to figure out how to get out of it :-)
  • A reward for escaping the trap!
  • A maze exists in place of the central ocean of the map. It only opens at night, but the rewards are great. If you remain until daybreak, you will be spirited away from the maze.
  • The duration of night can be influenced by offering nightmare fuel to the vessels at the entrances of the maze.

Stuff I'd like to add:

  • A ton of UI features for the host player, things like Too Many Items
  • A UI tab for creating non-item prefabs in the world
  • A UI tab for editing a selected prefab (make them big, fast, etc)
  • A UI tab for teleporting players around
  • A UI tab for sculpting land

Basically all that's stuff you can do with the console, but I'd like to make it accessible without that.

Edit: So current state of the mod:

  • Although nightmare lights are visible to clients, their state is not visible. I think I might just have to live with this for now.
  • Nightmares spawned by the nightmare lights are invisible to sane clients. This kind of breaks the maze. I'm looking at how the visibility of nightmares works, but it might not be possible for me to fix it, as I'm guessing it's pretty much entirely client-side. In that case, I'll see if I can get them to spawn different monsters instead, and have those drop nightmare fuel. I think I fixed this.
  • Lagginess of combat really hurts the maze too. :(

@Khrayfish I'm hosting it again.

I think I fixed the nightmare beasts in the maze, so I'm hosting again. I won't have time to add much in the way of the other features I want to add for a while, though.

I guess I'll hop on, give me 8 minutes tho, I'm backing up Payday 2 right now so my games run extraordinarily laggy.

Yeah it was pretty cool. I was on for an hour or two. Definitely adds an objective and a bit more motivation to play on the server. As opposed to the current state of DST multiplayer where you have to play with friends or family to have fun or can either join someone else's public server and be tossed in until the host logs off.

How do we mod, or add mods to Don't Starve Together?  I entered this server asking about it, and the admin smugly told me that he would not say anything about it.  Is there a modding thread that someone could link me to?

You realize that half of the people joining ask me that question? If I explained to every entitled 8 year old how to install mods, then watch them fail to do it five times over, I'd have no time to do anything at all. You're a big boy now, you can use search.

It's not that easy to come across the answer to this question.  Even the Beta FAQ doesn't say if mods work for Don't Starve Together.

When I didn't find an answer to this through Google searches, or the Forum sticky threads, I asked about it in the only unlocked mod server I could find, yours.  Since I'm not the first such person to arrive on your doorstep asking about mods, you should know that vaguely replying "No." to people's queries is not helpful -- be it one, or in your case three times.

If you need something quick and easy to type, you might try "Check forums."

Also, I don't mean to hate on a Developer.  I know it's time consuming, exhaustive work you guys do.  You're not obligated to explain everything to everyone, but please know that information about modding is scarce (because it seems not to really be a thing for the DST Beta).  If you can't think of anything simple to resolve people's confusion, it's probably better not to say anything at all.

So... rather than have an answer you don't like, you'd prefer to have no answer at all? Interesting.

If developers followed that logic, then whenever they had a change of plans (e.g. delaying release), they shouldn't tell anyone. Given how people usually react to that, I think you've got a double-standard, there.

The information about modding in finite, but not scarce. Get your mod working in single player than load it over into DST. Trouble shoot what ever goes wrong and I am sure the forums can offer some help.

Really cool idea!

Objective is exactly what I miss playing DS. It would be so good to explore dangerous labyrinth with faithful friends of mine... as soon as I get key.
I'm really glad there are people like you making DS more exciting.

@MenaAthena I've been trying to have it up as much as possible. When dedicated servers become available I'll probably host it like that, which should make keeping it up a bit easier and smoother.

Alright then.

Do I have to install the mod before I join?

No, actually it's part of the DST UI Modpack. It can be found here http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/41608-dst-functional-ui-mod-bundle/?hl=rezecib#entry546387

@MenaAthena I haven't released the Director Maxwell mod at all yet. You don't need any mods to play on the server, although if you use More DST Characters, you will be able to see me (Maxwell) and anyone else who joins as Wendy, Wes, or Maxwell.

@Pyromailmann You don't need any of the UI modpack to join the server, and this mod is not in there.
