Tips for a newbie

So, i bought DS+RoG during the summer, but for personal reasons, I haven't gotten a chance to play it until now. I have played a bit, and understand how to play, but i would like some tips from people who know more than me. (Also, how do you play adventure mode?)

So, i bought DS+RoG during the summer, but for personal reasons, I haven't gotten a chance to play it until now. I have played a bit, and understand how to play, but i would like some tips from people who know more than me. (Also, how do you play adventure mode?)

 

While it is best for a genuine experience, I'll give you a simple tip: Don't waste anything. Stay away from things that look odd until you muster up enough courage (and gear) to venture. Understand basic survival in reality, try to blend a little bit of that into DS, and you'll do fine, as this is how I started. 

 

Adventure mode is accessed through a rare landmark known as "Maxwell's Door" which can be located with a diving rod. It is in any biome, however, there is only one. You will know when you found it as it is always surrounded by a square of trees, some fireflies, and an assortment of evil flowers. Simply "interact" with the door, and it will launch Adventure Mode. (I recommend finding the door, and learning more about surviving and thriving before you go through it, as they worlds are very harsh.)

Seeds are a terrible source of food to stock up for the winter. They caused my first death in Don't Starve due to starvation.

 

So yeah, basically you learn from your deaths.

 

Never fool around with Dragonfly + no armor (especially with Maxwell).

Just don't attack pengulls.

Splumonkeys are real di*** not so kind animals.

 

And so on.

My tip for you: 

Always bring like more than two torches when traveling and even then try not to explore at night when your at your first days.

Really, you need to find your own way, as the game deliberately does not give you a tutorial. I will say like Zomsabra did, make sure you have resources for torches and i also recommend having a minimum of 6 logs for campfires (and the corresponding cushion of grass and twigs for both) while you gather food and other resources.

 

Whether it's easier for you to cook food and eat (oops gave a hint for some food ) then wait at a campfire or to always move with torches or a mix of the two at night when starting you'll have to decide on your own.

If this is your first time playing Don't Starve, don't use the DLC until you get a handle of the game first. The DLC is designed for experienced/veteran players who want a challenge, and trust me, it is significantly harder than the base game.

Some people want the full-on options experience at the start of the game however, but what Monkey_BBZ writes is very true.

Touch Stones let u forgive deadly mistakes one time but i promise it isn't a nice experience to get a second life and die a few  moments later again, because u just actived it without thinking about its position, distance to your base or resources.

 

Be sure to put some stuff around it.

for example log, grass, twigs, warm clothes or a heat stone help a lot getting back to your base in one piece

 

Basically you should always think one step further and ask you the question how to handle a situation before it happens

For example i always have a plan what to do when i am attacked - depending on where i am... is there a wormwhole?

perhaps some beefalo near me? Do i have at least 1 full torch, better 2 rdy? and so on... 

 

Of course u can give the adventure mode a try, but in my eyes it's for experienced players who are looking for a challenge.

I thought i know everything because i survived to day 500 in normal mode and started with the adventure mode and realised, i only learned 30-50% of Don't Starve and it took many tries and deaths to beat it. 

 

So take your time and have fun

You might be aware of a number (or all) of these already, but I'll post them just in case you haven't gone too far with the game:

• Get yourself equipped with a Log Suit as soon as possible; it'll give you leeway to make mistakes at a smaller cost to yourself.
• Plan your schedule every day so that you don't waste time wandering. You'll want to build up resources quickly and get yourself established before winter comes in about 20 days.
• Most enemies can be outrun; don't hesitate to flee if things go badly in a fight. Some fights may be too much for you to handle alone, so recruit allies (directly or indirectly) to help you.
• Be careful when burning things lest you set off unwanted wildfires. They can be cool to watch but may cost you valuable resources.
• You can't farm during winter, so plan ahead to secure alternative food sources that are not reliant on farming. I suffered a great deal during my second playthrough when my farms no longer worked and my food stocks collapsed.
• Whenever possible, build fire pits instead of camp fires. You can start up a fire a lot more cheaply in the long run. Build them close to where you'll be harvesting resources far away from your main camp.
• Have a smaller secondary camp with some essential resources in it when you are able to build one, just in case something happens to the first.
• If possible, have your main camp near (but not too close) to a beefalo herd. Beefalo manure is good for fertilizing farms or plants and can be used (like their wool) as fuel. As a herd they are tough enough to provide basic defense against hound attacks.
• Don't engage spiders too close to a Level 2 or 3 nest; you'll end up fighting the whole lot of them and tougher spider warriors as well. Draw them away first and things will go easier for you.

Some quick tips without too much spoilers

 

1) Take some time exploring the crafting menu. If you don't know what something does and the desc doesn't help, build it and test it out.

 

2) Don't expect to live very long until you know what kind of plan you need to make. 

 

3) Don't waste anytime (especially at the start of the game) most of your deaths will occur because you ran out of time before you accomplished this or that. 

 

4) Remember that building something is a separate step than placing it. 

 

5) No matter how annoying/deadly/difficult/scary some aspect of the game is, there is a way to use it to your advantage... you just have to figure out how.

 Best thing I can say is Don't ask from anyone . Learn it from your self. handful of practice is better than ton of theory .
