This is such a great game!

Recommended Posts

I know people use this cliche a lot, but I honestly don't know where to start!

I like game like TF2 and Dota2, games that don't invole lots of environmental effects, a lot of it is talking and playing with other humans in a light hearted manner. I therefore tend to avoid single player games.

I bought this game on a leap of faith last, year, and I don't regret my purchase at all!

This game succeeds at transforming the game based on how good you are. I remember I was scared as hell the first 3 days, not knowing what would happen!

The effects of all the creatures adds to the game's overall frightening manner. I was chopping down a tree at random, when a tree guard spawned. I don't get scared during scary movies, but this touched me to the core.

The effects of sanity are amazingly well done, too. The barely flickering shadow creatures makes you guess, then it's the eyes looking at you. When you walk over there, and discover that there is nothing there, what did you think? Or the shadow watcher first popping up? Or the creepy hand with the baby xylophone music thaOH GOD WHAT IS THAT THING IM SORRY PLEASE NO

This game also has an interesting way of congratulating you.

Oh, you learned how to stay alive the first night? Let me kill you with hunger.

you learned how to survive and stay well fed? Insanity, didn't prepare for that did you?

You have all three aspects running, health, hunger and sanity? hound attack!

Wow, you managed to stay alive through all of the creatues, insanity, and lack of food? Bam! winter.

oops, you're dead.

My only regret of this game is using the wiki. If someone asks you for tips, give them a polite "no" and tell them that the game allows them to find out how things work without killing them (too much), and the mysteriousness adds to the game's atmopshere.

Tldr, go back to playing dont starve, its a great game!

I just give vague answers.

I look forward to the reactions in this game as much as I did to the ones from the last Boy of Silence in Bioshock. Granted, nobody's fallen out of their bed because of Don't Starve, but sometimes they might as well have.

I completely agree with your position, and I also regret ever checking the wiki. Don't Starve is a very good game regardless, but while that aura of mystery and unknown remained it was beyond good, it was incredible.

Though I am guilty of giving very detailed answers when asked, so... I guess I'm a bad person.

I regret the wiki as well. Unfortunately it is my very nature as an information gatherer from years of game playing to do this. Ah hah hah.... It was one of the ways to tide over my feelings of wanting to play the game when I couldn't get it, after all.

I was mostly the opposite, in regards. I preferred single player games, but went onto TF2 and found it rather difficult to go back to single player with the same feelings about games again. I had played so many games for years now, so many, but I had stayed away from multiplayer for various reasons, and TF2 was the ONLY one of its kind that I wanted to play. I always had wanted to try an online shooter, but the style and feel of TF2 sucked me in right away, you can thank the meet the Medic video for that. I just found everything fantastic. The game is not perfect, but it's darn near.

Then I found a survival single player game that I might actually enjoy, large part  of it due to the childlike look of the game, as realistic looking games tend to make me feel somewhat tired, and here I am. Here's hoping you starvians have more stories to tell.

I totally agree with your assessment!  I told my husband he HAS to play this game, but I won't tell him anything else about it so he can enjoy the same experience I had.  I downloaded it on a lark, knew only it was a survival game, and LOVED every second of discovery since then.

Yay for fantastic games!

An I the only one who looked at the wiki and doesn't regret it? It's more fun to be able to know what everything is and strategize how to use them to your advantage then to be like "0h wat did ching" and die.

The only thing I don't look up is crockpot recipes.

It's the only thing i looked at...

(other than very small details that i love to know like world gen etc)

I need the wiki because I can never remember how to craft things and I waste too much time trying to find the right tabs.  And sometimes I just get stuck and need a push in the right direction.

I've always loved games that let you do things your own way - first one I played this much, and still play even now, was Populous: the Beginning.  Then before this came along I was playing Skyrim almost non-stop.

One of the things that drew me in and keeps me is the art and the atmosphere, as you say OP.   I never tire of having a mandrake bounce along after me at dusk for example.
