Help Me Reset All Unlocked Characters... [Steam] [RoG]

Recommended Posts

Basically a month ago, I stopped playing Don't Starve because it was getting repetitive, and I hoped that I would be able to get back into the game when I returned. With RoG coming soon (which I bought and installed) I have decided to completely restart from the beginning. I want to play with the characters in order as I unlock them BUT... I am not sure how to do that.

LONG STORY SHORT - I need someone to tell me how to delete all my saved DS data in the Steam Version so I can re-unlock the characters. (this includes resetting Wigfrid)

Thanks in advance. c:

Or you could just delete the don't starve file in the steam folder and re install.

delete the game then re-download it

Didn't work when I tried it. And I did it twice! (once with steam cloud and one without to let it grab all the new/clean data)

Guess ill try again.

by delete the game he means also going to the folder and manually deleting it. just to be clear, did you do that too?

Yep, thats what I did when I didnt use the Steam Cloud. (I also deleted the Do Not Starve folder in the Klei folder in my documents.)

I found a fix by a Steam User named Tire_Iron

  1. Disable Steam Cloud
  2. Go to the Steam>Userdata folder
  3. open the file in there with all the numbers
  4. find 219740
  5. open folder named "remote"
  6. delete contents
  7. open Don't Starve
  8. close
  9. Re-Enable Steam Cloud
  10. Play again and upload files to the Cloud

Thanks for trying to help, guys! But I got it. :-)

(And after I posted this imsomony helped out, so credits are due!)

Here's how I solved this issue when I wanted to restart the game. I needed to crash it entirely while it was trying to save.

  • Start Don't Starve.
  • Pick any character, begin a new world.
  • Press the ~ Key and type this c_speed(80) then run yourself as fast as you can into the ocean.
If the game stops responding, open Task Manager and kill the Don't Starve process.
    This should wipe your data.

  • If that doesnt work, you can try this more CPU intensive console command instead.
    for x = 1, 100 do GetClock():MakeNextDay() end
This instantly skips 100 days of time and can cause the game to appear like it's crashing while processing.
If that does not cause the program to stop responding, set the amount of days from 100 to something much higher.
Open task manager and kill the Don't Starve process once it stops responding.
    This should wipe your data.

  • If you don't want to fiddle with console, you can just set everything in your world to, "Lots" and hope it stops responding then kill it with Task Manager. This will only work if your PC is not very powerful.

Atleast, that's how I did it the two times I wanted to wipe my data after cheating to unlock all the characters. Good Luck! :wilson_laugh:

I didn't read the entire thread but you found a fix! Yay!

I'm still going to leave this here as a testament to how much I love crashing Don't Starve.

For the record:

The save file can be found under:

Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{e.g. 117878775}\{219740}\remote\
Linux: ~/.steam/steam/userdata/{unique ID}/219740/

If Steam Cloud is disabled (or release without Steam), players can find their save files under

Windows: My Document\Klei\DoNotStarve
Mac OS X: ~/Documents/Klei/DoNotStarve/save
Linux: ~/.klei/DoNotStarve/

Here is a list of files in the game save file:

  • profile: files that record a player's experience and characters unlocked.
  • survival_(number): a player's save in Sandbox Mode.
  • adventure_(number): a player's save in Adventure Mode.
  • cave_(number): a player's save in a Cave or Ruin.
  • saveindex: description for all save slots in "Choose A Slot" menu.
  • morgue: a record of all the player's deaths.

Deleting these files (and if on Steam, turning off the Steam cloud before if doing do) will empty your settings. As noted, I see no reason why you'd want to do something one long game before escape/death would bring back most of your characters (and one finishing adventure mode, one found if lucky in adventure more and one skull found and buried in RoG.)

Probrably shouldn't of necro'd this post buuuut it is helpful soo...

how do i "...upload files to the Cloud"?

If you did all previous steps correctly, when you re-enable the steam cloud, and start the game, you'll get a pop-up telling you that steam has different files (the old ones) stored away and they are different than the current ones (the ones you made by starting the game without the cloud.) This is when you hit "Upload to the cloud" which will change steam's stored files.
