Absolutely frustrated; hours picking good site, planting, trapping, buildings, storing for winter and POOF all gone on month 25 by four hounds and I have NO idea what to do about it. Cannot find any clear guidance so guess its shelf time.

Could NOT locate Beefalo to assist!

Does anyone know how to see what the ingredients are for crafting recipes? I can obviously see the picture of the ingredient but it would be nice to find out the name of the ingredient too. My partner and I are having a blast on this game. Works so well on PS4 and via remote play too. 

While (see below) I strongly encourage people to experiment learning stuff, if you don't want to accidentally misclick and make a pile of wet goop,  you may go here and look up the recipe components/use a simulator.

It's called Roguelike for a reason. if you die, it's all dead (if without those rare craftable or Touchstone-located items that keep you alive. I recommend you learn how to make life-giving amulets and meat effigies ASAP.) The point of the game is to discover things out on your own (such as how to get beard hair when you are not Wilson for example.  People go crazy trying to kill that rabbit out of their respective hats....wait is that a hint?)

Then use pigs. Have you fed them something besides meat?

Been playing this game for the past few days on my PS4 and I'm loving it. Thoroughly hooked. I just survived my first winter, which was a great feeling and more recently, killed my first Spider Queen.

 

Advice to some of those posting above: while monster encounters are intimidating early in the game, and best avoided, a spear, log suit and a bit of strategy goes a long way in making those encounters managable. A lot of it is learning the behavior of certain monsters (e.g. spiders are stunned when hit, so use repeated attacks to finish them off quickly).

Aside from that, really the best option is to kyte monsters to beehives, pigmen and beefalo. I still do this for hounds as a couple isn't bad, but 3+ and it gets difficult to take them on alone. Not to mention if a couple pigs or beefalo go down in the fight, you're getting some good resources for little effort.

 

To survive your first winter it really comes down to 2 important factors: staying warm and food. Either warm clothes or a heat stone are nice for keeping warm and mobile (warm clothes + beard > heat stone, in my opinion). For food, in the absence of farms/berries, rabbits are really your go to food source all winter. Hopefully you built your camp close to a savannah/prairie biome. I used to try baiting all my traps and found out I was wasting a lot of resources. My tip, put your traps right next to or overtop of rabbit holes and catching them is inevitable. They have to come out or go home eventually. Keep a good trap line going constantly all winter, probably 8-10 traps out.

It's definitely more fun to try figuring out things on your own, and it is very rewarding and satisfying. I've mostly been learning as I go but sometimes it's hard to make out the little pictures on my TV, so I'll look them up. I also had to look up how to find the elusive "gears" items, of course I still haven't found one. Knowing how/where to get an item is one thing...actually finding/attaining it is another.

I agree, this game is too good to be spoilt using a wiki. It's not the cooking recipes I'm talking about though, it's the crafting of materials/tools/structures etc. Where it shows you what ingredients/materials are needed, it shows the object image but I can't figure out what that object is called. I know on PC you can hover the cursor over it to find out, I was wondering if there is such an option on PS4 :)

I love this game. Cant get enough but only had it a week. Is there any chance you can increase the customize options for the ps4. Someone posted earlier abd only having default or less option. Would love to have more lightning as the robot dude and just whizz roundthe map at 100mph :) great game though.

As others have said, I appreciate the free PS4 download, as well as your policies on posting video content from the game on YouTube and whatnot.

This is my first roguelike and probably the first thing I've seriously played since Dark Souls; I love the lack of tutorials and permadeath!

It's also really nice to have a decent amount of women characters for once, and the dialogue (if that's the right word?) makes me inspect everything.

That I love the gameplay is a given.

My record so far is only day 24, as I've only made 9 runs, but I'm optimistic about this one and eagerly working on my Shadow Manipulator, so cool are these inventions.

Loving the PS4 so far, and I plan on playing Don't Starve a little bit on it soon.

Do you know how accessible the file system of the PS4 HDD (mainly, game data) is (hashes or keys?), or is that something you're not allowed to disclose? I don't think I need to elaborate, it's pretty clear what I'm interested in. :p

The way I dealt with Hounds to begin with, when I wasn't as confident with the games combat mechanics, was to hide from them using a Bush Hat. You can make one of those using a Straw Hat, a piece of Rope and a Berry Bush (have to dig that up with a shovel) at an Alchemy Engine. It's good, has infinite durability and renders you completely invisible to enemies, provided they didn't already see you at least. Just pop it on and use it when you hear the Hounds barking.

 

Either that or just run, they're too slow to keep up with you even on rough terrain so they'll give up eventually. The Bush Hat is most useful when they come at night when you can't run because of the darkness. They'll likely hang around nearby your camp for the whole night, because they're dicks like that, so just wait in your bush until morning and make a break for it when you see a reasonable opening. 

 

 

The Bush Hat will keep you going for a bit, certainly at your camp anyway, but ultimately you are going to have to learn some way to kill them

Huh. I read on the wiki that the bush hat doesn't work on hounds.

Hound trouble person: when hounds stop and bark while chasing you, they will aggro on the closest thing to them when they stop barking, as far as I can tell.

As long as you can avoid starving to death or being killed by something else during the chase, you can run them over to something nasty and watch them get massacred.

Unless the higher-day hounds you're on don't have that behavior, or something?

And people: if hounds are too pro for you then just disable them to none before you even start the game! The only thing is that you won't be able to get hound teeth and blue and red gems won't be a source that you can get again, aka not renewable.

Question: would the game work on PS3? My friend has it and I was thinking if it would work for him in case a non-local co-operative player mod is made, so me and him can play from our gadgets in one map.

And people: if hounds are too pro for you then just disable them to none before you even start the game! The only thing is that you won't be able to get hound teeth and blue and red gems won't be a source that you can get again, aka not renewable.

 

Very renewable, they fall from the ceiling in caves. Not the teeth, but the gems.

Look you made the mistake of buying the xbox one, don't start saying one console is better than another when clearly at the moment the xbox one can fail because of lack of games, the fact that its selling a quarter of the PS4 sales should make you worried, i hope for your sake it does not fail, but your attitude is so bitter, its like you haven't noticed the hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy the PS4 and the free games on PSN when you pay for PS Plus, and now are annoyed at yourself for making a mistake,
