More Sanity Consequences

Recommended Posts

Right now all sanity does is send shadow creatures at you which give nightmare fuel for powerful items and gives you monster meat instead of morsels it should affect more, like...

Affecting Physical Health- Small at first and then worse as worse as sanity goes down.

Items changing appearance/acting differently-  Things like Dragon Fruit might actually have a nightmare dragon in its appearance, or the dark sword has a mouth and talks to the character like Lucy does.

Note, this is all my personal opinion, flawed, personal opinion.

You know, when sanity was originally announced the forums speculated on how amazing it could be. We dreamed of hallucinations and the mind playing tricks, insanity-exclusive items (Exclusively able to be crafted and used while insane), tree beefalo, rabbit hounds, and more. We probably dreamed too much. It made the release of the sanity update a bit more of a letdown. Not saying the end result wasn't cool, but aspects like that could have made the sanity update a sort of game overhaul.

Currently the insanity monsters aren't even illusions, but creatures from another dimension that prey on the weakening mind of the player.

I do enjoy the dark sword suggestion though. Stuff like that was along the lines of what we hopelessly dreamed of.

Also, pinecone-eating. That was a huge thing we wanted. Or a huge thing I wanted. There were many fanarts of it. Or maybe just one. But it stood out.

I don't think affecting physical health directly would be good though. A crazy person doesn't become injured merely by being crazy. If anything, the person becomes injured while doing things crazy....

Perhaps if crazy, doing certain things could take away health. (Crafting, maybe?)

But straight up losing health would be a bit out of the spirit of the game. After all, sanity should be survivable. It'd be like running on a timer... With no hope.
There's a way I want to phrase the upper, but I'm too tired to think of how.

My idea with physical health being affected is that an insane person is probably not going to pay to much attention to minor things that hurt, poisonous food or things that aren't even food to begin with look good to eat, they might not notice or not care about little cuts that get infected, there is probably a way better way to make insanity more of a punishment, but that's all I can come up with : /

What about letting the Inventory items swap around? I put my weapons and utility on 1-6, just like the food. Letting these ones swap, would let me creep out a bit. You could think about only letting your berries swap with dragon fruits or healing salves with monster meat. This would be a nice little change, i think. Another idea would be the random drop of items. You run around and one of ur stones just drops out of your backpack.. That may harass a lot.

Maybe i try creating a mod for this. Good idea! (Even if i hate insanity a lot as it is at the moment :))

That could be interesting. But don't make it unless you really want to.

Well, you will need a mod for this. But this stuff is not on top of my agenda at the moment. I will see, whether there will be more suggestions here and implement a bunch of them later on. Such a mod has to be harmonious for a good feely.

All in all i liked the following suggestions:

  • Swapping items
  • Dropping items
  • Atmosphere changes (laughing and rambling)
  • probability of Self-damage at attacking

Lowering health would be a terribly boring penalty for insanity and it really wouldn't be that much fun. Buut, those things you suggested as reasons for it would actually make more interesting penalties themselves! For instance, meats could change appearance (as rabbits do) so that the player can't tell the difference between monster meat and healthy meat. I'm not sure how not paying attention to damage would work though; perhaps there'd be less feedback when you take damage? Stuff like this would lead to the player doing things to lower their own health, rather than just applying a health penalty for things the player can't see and has no say in.

Anyway, I REALLY don't think that they're going to suddenly make sanity more of a threat at this point, and I'm not sure I'd want them to. Sanity is enough of a nuisance to make me want to keep it up and it can still kill me under the proper circumstances.

But that doesn't mean I'd be averse to something that would make sanity more of a big deal. I still think it would be cool if building a shadow manipulator triggered something like this. More dangerous shadow monsters could start showing up at low sanity that don't simply try to kill you, but actually interact with the rest of the world. I also think it would be interesting if certain items were more effective when your sanity is low. So, there could be an item like a dark sword that does more damage the lower your sanity is. Obviously things like this shouldn't outweigh the negative effects of sanity, but making the player have to be insane to gain some advantages would certainly be interesting.

"More rant personal opninion/idea notes?"

As well as the swapping inventories idea, what about paying homage to pinecone-eating? Certain items can be disguised in your inventory as other items due to you being crazy... If an item looks like food due to insanity... You can eat it, which has negative effects and gets rid of the item. Imagine eating a "tasty" looking "Honey ham", or those "perfectly consumable" "chocolate plants".

That would require much modding, indeed.

And I agree with those who think atmosphere is important. It's a huge aspect of how Don't Starve plays and feels.

My inability to describe what I am writing properly makes me think I may be going crazy.... I knew those dark petals weren't a good substitute for lettuce....

I like that. I imagine a situation, when ur santity drops below x, that the screen shortly turns dark, some items swap, and some of ur (usually) non-eatable items turn into yummy food. The count of this items changes (20 pinecones -> 3 Honey Ham) and if you eat one, it wont make you feel good.. Random item drop may happen later..

Modding intensity is high, though.

PS: What about combining it with this ideas: http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/30503-dreams/

I meant self damage while idling/walking and holding a weapon. Kind of like emo people/suicide.

Thought: What if certain things seen at low sanity look like they're alive? The rocks could turn into tiny golem things, pig houses would sprout chicken legs, and campfires would look like a will-o-wisp.

Thats a good idea. But this would be such a huge update. You need lots of artwork, code, testing and probably graphics-source-files from klei, which arent public, yet. Bit too hard to mod, but nice idea.

Love the idea of inventory items swapping around :) Freaky and cool.

I reckon health being drained would be a bad idea because it'd conjoin two of the three survival metrics. I mean, currently if you have some health you can contend with being insane, albeit suffering the associated consequences. But if being insane drained health then someone with very low health who - through unfortunate circumstances - was driven insane would have no chance of survival. It seems a little heartless (pun intended).
