Perv Seriously @DudeNamedEvan , there are indirect hints in the Puzzle Solutions from the game update trailers. Like Wes and Wolfgang being on the Circus Poster of which the train crash carrying them also had Maxerll as William Carter then in another location and not with the circus; and Willow being discussed in a tragic fire; and Wendy possibly being indirectly mentioned as William's brother's "the twins," (Abigail being the other tragic twin .) They don't ever directly say how (now as) Maxwell decided to "bring" those characters to DS, nor explain why WX-78 (but he's suggested as built by Wilson but no proof either,) Wickerbottom and Woodie got there either. Like Charlie, we're all hoping to see or read some back-story for them one day. Since the last "All's Well that Maxwell" puzzle was solved (explaining Charlie's "fate,") there has been an "Intermission" animation, and that suggests more puzzles in the future (guessing linked to a few surprise updates and the Downloadable Upgrade Content.) But that's all we know so far. While he gained knowledge, it only sucked him into a completely different world in which it is questionable if what he learned was really worth it.
