About Chester..

What is his true name?

I figured I'd ask you guys since you know the lore the best out of all forums on here.

Wilson calls him "Otto von Chesterfield, Esquire". (This is also what the wiki claims his name is)

The poster from when he was released, calls him "Chester von Ottoman, Esquire".

Which one is it? Does anyone know?

Chester von Ottoman,is what people that can't read call him.

Aside the random rudeness, this is actually an interesting find, two names.
I think the poster name is the more than likely name, sence Wilson is less likely to know his name. (he was probably trying to give chester a long name to be cool, or something)

Nope, the Wilson one is right. The poster one is an oversight (it's not the first time) Besides a lot of late adopters of the game still call it C. von Ottoman in their streams, not being able to read what Wilson says.

otto (short for ottoman if I remember correctly) sounds more plausible as the first name than chester so I'd say:

Ottoman von Chesterfield esq.

it does actually say that on the poster...

That's a good point, glad someone is actually being helpful and informative.

It would be real odd if Wilson knew about Chester since he comes from a different world entirely.

It also would make more sense for him to be "of Ottoman", even if it doesn't make sense because of the dutch.

I don't remember germans being in the turkish Ottoman but that'd just make for an interesting story.

Never heard of Chesterfield though. Guessing that'd be in the US or something?

I was just really conufsed when I spotted this, I knew that Otto was part of Chesters name so I looked it up on the wiki.

It's a bit confusing and I hope one of the staff perhaps might spot this thread and give the true answer.

Just because I'm rude doesn't mean i'm wrong. It's the same thing as the "Nightmare Knight" that happened a few months ago.

So Wilson's the right one.

I'm more inclined to trust Wilson's version of the name. After all, the game itself is more up to date and overall just a more reliable source of information than some old poster. I mean, one of the posters says that you can dig up turf with the shovel. That's obviously not the case anymore.

Also, shouldn't this be in the general discussion or something? It's not really, y'know, artsy. I'm reluctant to mention this because questioning the location of threads seems to start fights.

The name of one of the NPCs can count as lore, no?

I mean, information about NPCs is part of the lore, so information about an NPC in Don't Starve would be part of Don't Starves lore.

Also, by that logic it'd make even more sense if the poster was right.

The poster is created after they have designed and implemented the functions into the game and have the update ready. (At least that's how I think it is, I highly doubt they'll have the designer just come up with everything and then implement whatever the designer of the poster wants to have in the game)

So it could very well be an error they made before putting in the correct name on the poster, the poster is more recent than the files themselves therefor more likely to be correct.

But this is just chance. It is more LIKELY to be correct.

And at that time, the turfs were dug up with shovels.

Chesters information nor Wilsons examination note for Chester in specific have not been updated since the update these two things were released in, right? So it's not a fair comparison since any update to them is an old update, not something newly re-done.

Nah, 'lore,' in this context, is referring to player created stuff. But now I understand why you posted this here.

What I'm trying to say is that, if Wilson's quote was an error, they would likely fix it in a later update. It's been quite a while, so they would likely have discovered the error and fixed it by now. That's why I'm more inclined to trust the game.

It's very true, if it is an error they most likely would have fixed it by now. They have been somewhat fast with fixing other minor issues.

And I didn't realize Lore meant player submissions, I've never heard of that before.

That's a bit odd, oh well. Hopefully the thread is moved into General Discussion/Off topic area soon.

Edit: Glad it seems to be what I initially had believed.

Alright, now I'm fairly certain it's von Chesterfield and not von Ottoman, even if it's a bit weird.

I found the patch note for the patch where Chester was added and it states:

  • The mysterious Otto Von Chesterfield can be found in some swamps. (You will need a regen to find him)

Ha!

While we're nit picking...

Esquire.

Definition of ESQUIRE
1
:  a member of the English gentry ranking below a knight
2
:  a candidate for knighthood serving as shield bearer and attendant to a knight
3
—used as a title of courtesy usually placed in its abbreviated form after the surname <John R. Smith, Esq.>
4
archaic :  a landed proprietor

Assuming we're using this more supported European one and not the US-supported concept (the US one typically means Lawyer,) Chester is part of the land-owning Nobility or "gentry" ranked just below Knighthood or "Squire."

And assuming he is then Gentry...

Definition of GENTRY
1
a obsolete :  the qualities appropriate to a person of gentle birth; especially :  courtesy

b :  the condition or rank of a gentleman
2
a :  upper or ruling class :  aristocracy

b :  a class whose members are entitled to bear a coat of arms though not of noble rank; especially :  the landed proprietors having such status
3
:  people of a specified class or kind :  folks <no real heroes or heroines among the academic gentry — R. G. Hanvey>

Where the [censored] is Chester's land supposed to be? And am i supposed to believe that he (it?) was born (into some noble family) and not made like tentacles?

I think it's a little less of the actual literal translation, and a little more of the "I'm a gentleman scientist and this is my fancily named pet."

Although, it does make sense to think of him as the squire to Wilson's knight. He follows Wilson around and carries his stuff, and it doesn't seem terribly out of character to me for Wilson to style himself as a knight. He'll always be a gentleman scientist, but that's not really a role that's suited for combat. An honorable knight on a quest is a classy enough role, and suited to the circumstances, if not quite as dapper. It probably helps his mental state a bit to think of himself in that sense, a man with a mission and high standards of conduct, rather than as a desperate and frightened survivor.

....good grief that was more analysis than I intended. Someone teach me to shut up.

Now I thought how Insane this all is...and that made me think of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza...Hello Chester, AKA Sancho.

So can we have Windmills in DS now please Klei? :-)

He's one of the only thing in the game that actively helps Wilson without ever doing any harm to him alongside the Pig King (a pattern emerges!) That seems like it's worth pointing out. Now, for some theories!

  • Chester was once human, and became yet another of Maxwell's (alternatively, Their) playthings. Some form of dark magic turned him into the adorable fellow he is now.
  • Distant relative of the Pig King.
  • The legal owner (somehow) of the swamp biomes. Merms are awful residents.

I'm leaning towards the first one.

It'd be pretty damned awesome if they added a similar story to explain Chesters existance.

I mean, an eye-bone isn't exactly the most practical step of evolution. It sounds more like a curse, something the creator of the terrible, hostile world had made to mock whatever Chester once was.

It would also explain why Chester is so willing to help Wilson with anything to confront Maxwell.
