The one and only tall bird went extinct in my world, killed by hounds after being stuck trying to get back to its own biome by endlessly running against the shoreline.

Extinction kind of sucks, especially if it's not by your doing. Although it is kind of fitting that the world is in decay, just like you :p

It would also keep players from using Pig Men as 100% disposable meat shields with benefits. Currently, you profit three-fold for letting pigs do the fighting for you:

1) You take less damage because monsters are targeting Pig Men and not you

2) Your weapons and armor take less durability damage because the Pig Men are doing some or all of your dirty work

3) You get more loot from the Pig Men that died defending you (unless you're really slow and it all gets eaten, in which case you still broke even)

With a limit to X Pigs per House, you'll want to protect them (sometimes) instead of farming them daily for Meat and/or not caring if the whole town dies to Hound attacks or a super-sized Optimus Pine.

The problem is that provoking a single Optimus Pine is currently an almost sure death sentence to the entire village, and pigs will attack wave after wave each morning.

Given, I'm sure the pig AI will change a good bit if their spawns are limited.

Don't chop trees right next to a pig village and then leave treegaurds to feed upon them. It's an easily avoidable problem to a very needed fix. Pigs grant people way too many easy outs.

I assume football helmets will be getting a change to matts again or less likely become finite.

When the end game starts to come in, you won't be spending forever in one world. So, finiteness and extinction will not be game-killers, but rather temporary inconveniences.

Of course, if you squander too many resources in an early world and don't have much stuff to bring with you to the next you might have trouble surviving in its harsher environment. Or you might enter a world with no tallbirds. There will eventually be enough varied content that not all of it has to exist in every generated world.

Ever seen the old TV show Sliders?

Things and reasons why i am the best.

You guys are sticking to a free play mode though right? Everything you just said i imagine is going into the mysterious story mode. I haven't ever seen that show. But i do enjoy hamburgers.

Piggies will be able to go extinct? Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, i dun wanna live on veggies forever. Also my longest living pig companion ever just died. His name was Kevin. May the dont starve gods have mercy on his baconny soul. His funeral was a memorable occasion. And it got even better! It doesnt happen very often that the deceised takes care of the snacks, but Kevin was a miracle worker till the very end.

R.I.P. my pink friend.

The looming danger of completely draining a world of resources would be extra motivation to move on to a new world, so that's a fine mechanic for story mode, though I hope that most of the mechanics that are designed with story mode in mind are implemented alongside story mode. They may not mesh in very well with the free play-ish sort of game mode that we currently have.

Piggies will be able to go extinct?
Houses will. you can tear it down and rebuild it. The only finate resource being rocks. But lets be real i have so many stacks of rocks that it's long time coming. Day 500 maybe?

Just give your pigs football helmets for protection. you have to extinct 3 waves of pigs per house.
