...do the different shinebug morphs actually have any benefits/uses? I understand Pufts breeding system and the necessity for puft princes, etc... but with shinebugs morphs just seems purely a cosmetic thing... they don't even seem to give off different levels of light?

am I just not understanding shinebugs, or are they sort of underutilized?

Some shinebug morphs eat more phosphorite and have slower reproduction rates. So it's strictly worse. Maybe if you have excess in something that could be used as food for specific morph? E.g. final morph could be useful as diamond sink. Still not very practical.

Yes, the default shinebug gives decor.... is that all they're useful for? all morphs... just the same decor buff?

The later morphs in the tree produce more decor. The default bug provides 30 decor in a 5 tile radius. Sun, Royal, Coral, and Azure bugs produce 50 decor in a 7 tile radius. Abyss bugs produce 80 decor in a 7 tile radius, and don't produce any light. Radiant bugs produce 200 decor in an 8 tile radius, 4x stronger than a Gold Masterwork Statue.

Basically Shinebugs exist as a very powerful radiation source, or a very powerful decor source if you get them all the way to their final form. If you have the Spaced Out DLC, Diamonds are very cheap to make and let you easily create max decor throughout the colony.

Unhappy Shine Bugs no longer produce light

No light but that's only a minus 15 decor ?

Getting all the way into radiant bug took around 50 cycles, the cost is your dupe labor and your attention to switch the ranch into the next tier, but you still need to keep one radiant bug ranch functional because every bug has a chance to go back to previous tier or go straight into the regular shine bug.

I would skip shine bugs btw, there's a lot of other ways to get more decor.

On the highest radiation difficulty, just staying in the same room with them causes radiation sickness. It takes 2 cycles with one bug, and only 1 cycle with two bugs.

Putting Abyss bugs in bedrooms, or Radiant bugs in workrooms and recreation rooms, will still cause radiation sickness.

I really wish they had limited the radioactivity to only specific morphs.

I think Shinebug radiation is useful. However, if there were stages—like emitting just a tiny amount at the beginning, and then certain morphs having high output—they wouldn't just end up acting like nuclear reactors.

Addendum: Sun bug eggs are used as medicine for zombie spore outbreaks, and the final two forms (abyss and radiant) live 75 cycles instead of 25 for all the other variants.

And also since shine bugs reproduce so quickly when happy, you can basically toss any unwanted morphs in a box and let them evolve into raw egg for your cooking needs.
