Hey everyone, it's beta time again!

As you guys know, we spent a bit more time on WX-78 skill spotlight than anticipated, so we've decided to split the Shadow arc release into two parts.  The focus of this update will be on the final room in the Sanctum, where you can obtain the Keystone.  For now, taking the Keystone to the Ancient Gateway will just reset the Sanctum.

Instructions for accessing the beta branch can be found here.  As always, things may be changed or retuned, and we'll be looking forward to your feedback during beta.

Other Additions

  • Added Heat Gland that drops from Geothermites, used in new crafts.
  • Added Thermic Tools.
  • Added Coals, a new trap type.
  • Added Cooling Balm, a new healing salve.

What’s to come

  • The loot that drops from the new Sanctum encounter in this first release is not finalized.  We have plans to tie those to Portation Orbs, and have another unique loot drop instead.
  • We’re experimenting with a new heat based damage type tied to the Thermic Tools, that isn’t setting things on fire.
  • There will be a new item that, when found, will reveal a direct path to the deepest room of the Sanctum.

Changes

  • Added a method of mass unravelling duplicate Curios in the Item Collection screen.
  • A rope can be used on the Sanctum Chasm to provide a way back up from the Ancient Archives.
  • The Ancient Key is no longer destroyed, but instead pops out when the Ancient Gateway destabilizes and resets the ruins.
  • All plant-like creatures burn for longer and take more fire damage.
  • Shadow Hands will no longer target Night Lights.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Endothermic Fire being layered incorrectly.
  • Fixed Dwarf Stars not dissipating Miasma.
  • Fixed Willow’s skill tree layout being misaligned.
  • Fixed a bad sequence with the Beckoning Hand showing up when reloading the game as the Ancient Fuelweaver is dying.
  • Fixed being unable to click on objects behind WX-78’s shadow drones.
  • Fixed some network vulnerabilities.

Notes for Modders

  • Added d_scanlayout command to scan a square area in the world to export to a static layout file.

Definitely for the better that you guys did this, I always felt a bit stung the lunar side of the final update was a bit rushed for Klei fest. I do think having half of it ready for the fest and then finishing the other half afterward is the right call here.

Two thoughts come to mind from reading this:

- Thermic Tools immediately remind me of Obsidian Tools from Shipwrecked, while possibly being better.

- Both the tools, as well as plants being more vulnerable to fire, makes me feel that Willow could have some special interactions here.

This will be out in the next beta hotfix as R42_HEATED_VAULT if you want to prepare for it in advance.

just a quick heads up not a big deal but it seems not all items are unraveled with the new mass unravel.

Just to be clear it was only these for me but I figured it was worth mentioning.

The selection only allows items that can be both weaved by spools and unraveled into spools by design.

I think it's intended, as these can be either gifted to other people or sold on the market. Would be really nice if there could be a toggle for this, in the menu it has.

This looks a little worrying if it’s supposed to be the conclusion to the shadow arc. This has the exact same problem that I’ve had with the last two shadow updates, where it’s just a cave update disguised as a rift update. I don’t really like that we are focusing on the fumarole when the actual shadow rifts haven’t really seen any sense of progression since they were added three years ago.

I’m sure part 2 will focus more on it, but right now I’m pretty skeptical that shadow will ever be able to receive the same sort of care and treatment that they put into lunar. The recent attention towards lunar and lack thereof for shadow has been something that’s been really bothering me, but this conclusion doesn’t really seem to be trying to address that at all.

Can we wait for part two before judging? 💔

Another update another instance of Wormwood catching strays for no reason.

It doesn't include Wormwood. Treeguards, Lureplants, Grass Gekkos, Butterflies, etc.

I stayed patient through Depths of Duplicity, through Ancient Echos, and yet neither of them did anything to address the progression for shadow rifts. I literally said explicitly that part 2 will likely be where the focus is, but I think it’s concerning currently that the focus is so lacking when this is supposed to be the final update for shadow and not even the part 1 is attempting to give it any sense of progression that it sorely lacks. At this point the progression for shadow will be infinitely weaker compared to lunar, which I personally found disappointing.

All I’m saying is that, considering what we see in just part 1 and how little it focuses on shadow rifts, it seems extremely unlikely that part 2 will help shadow reach lunar’s level of attention and thus make the two paths feel extremely lopsided and uneven. Part 2 can help fix this, but my hopes aren’t high that shadow will ever feel equal to lunar.
