This probably won't be the case but I would absolutely LOVE a modern rework of Don't Starve. The current arc we have for DST seems to be closing soon, so it'd be perfect for it to continue in a new environment, while not completely abandoning the existing game. It's been over ten years, I think a new approach is very much due.

but....my skins....

There will definitely not be a second competence of the game

but it just makes too much sense, that explain the slowed down dev time, they constantly told us that they are doin some sort of big plans for dst and cant reveal until the road map comes , early april matches up with the new game reveal, why they decide to end rift missions . all signs pointed that this is related to a sequel/extension/extra mode for dst

Extra mode ?
If it was solo mode...

My personal crackpot theory is that this new game whether a sequel or spinoff will use the same (or refined) game engine and all the skins and stuff will carry over. It makes sense to me because we still have quite a ways to go on skill trees and what not.

Don't Super Starve Kart - the racing game we didn't know we didn't need.

Actually.. a DS kart racer would be as bonkers as Sonic Racing Crossworlds, and each character would have their own unique power ups, I can’t wait to ride up behind an enemy kart and then lightning dash through them as Wigfrid, or to Toss a Torch into the cabin of their car as Wilson, or to have Abigail fly ahead and “haunt” an enemy vehicle causing them to spin out or reverse controls as Wendy, or to even teleport from last place into first place as the dimensional hopping Wortox.

If all of these abilities sound too crazy and OP for you for a kart racing game…. You really haven’t ever played a Mario or Sonic Kart racing game before huh?

On a more serious note though: I hope the new game ends up being a randomly generated dungeon raiding Don’t Starve RogueLite (like how there is Minecraft, and then There’s Minecraft Dungeons.) and before you say that there’s no demand for it/it wouldn’t be popular enough… they literally just announced a Minecraft Dungeons 2.. soooo 🤷🏻‍♂️

This definitely won 't happen!

They are still developing DST... I think it's a separate independent game. 99% of it will be a solo game.

It’s not that crazy of an idea. I picture something like The Forge or Gorge but fleshed out into a full game. You can use the same characters and cosmetics but expand them into a new gameplay style. Even take skill trees into account but recontextualize or rework certain skills to fit the game better

A real sequel to DST in an improved or better engine would be awesome.
It would also mean that DST will probably have its updates finish after the next remaining skill trees, which is a bit sad, but the potential of a brand new game would certainly make up for that loss.

We'll see. Though DST concluding in the near future ('near' is loosely defined here) would not come as that big a surprise to me. Big things are getting revealed, and the natural update cycle is also seemingly in it's final phase, to my eyes at least. After DST launched, the first arc was A New Reign, which culminated in the battle against the Ancient Fuelweaver. Then, we had Return of Them, culminating in the battle against the Celestial Champion, and now with the two sides established we have From Beyond, which progressed/will progress both sides. Whether the actual overarching conclusion will be in From Beyond or a separate, smaller thing (let's be frank From Beyond doesn't really have a 'finality' ring to it), only time will tell.

Most will probably be revealed in the Roadmap, which I'm assuming will drop alongside the Triple I Initiative on the 9th (it is a Thirsty Thursday, after all). Since this ought to only be an announcement, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that it will be a sequel or otherwise continuation, though I'm not sure where it'd go. A spinoff is still more likely in my opinion. Either way, no matter what it is I am hoping that they'll have an entirely separate team for it, since we just had this big thing about them focusing all their efforts on the current DST update's quality over quantity.

I have to seriously question why they even bothered to add the things they’ve recently (& not so recently…) added into DST if their plans all along were to move on from it.

Like for example the ocean (which still to this very day is empty, boring and will put you to sleep sailing until you reach an actual point of engagement) and then there’s also the rope bridges in caves… why add that at all if for what? 15 years the game has been just fine without them?

My only logical conclusion is that they used DST as a testing grounds for what to add and what to leave out of a new game. Like for example, if they could get the physics right on the cave rope bridges, then with DS 2 (or whatever it’s called) when it has 3D elevated platforms of land, they can utilize the rope bridges that debuted first in DST.

But… what would I know, I’m no game developer lmao. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel like its gonna be a action version or puzzle version DS (Or a rougelike) Also I feel like making a third DS game would be redundant, becuase what else could they add to Ds other than putting it in a better engine?

Hrm.. very interested on what this will entail... I'm very much for this new game if it helps create a bridge to DST from ground zero.

Right now, it is still kinda hard to get people into Dont Starve Together. Though I'm not super invested in them, The Gorge and The Forge are actually pretty helpful in getting people to play around and fiddle with the game's interface and core mechanics. I have trouble getting friends to play the base game, but they are usually down to play a match or two of the Forge/Gorge.

Hopefully this new Dont Starve game works where you share things between it and Together to get players more familiar with the core and then hopefully be able to enjoy Together.

I'm guessing it will continue the story or build parallel with the ongoing DST story

I'm not sure what I would want it to be..

Dare I dream of just a decent singleplayer experience again, of a story and a place to explore and immerse myself in. Are those profitable anymore? I don't feel like we ever see singleplayer experiences unless they're drenched in gambling mechanics or rouge-like lingo... Choose between 3 upgrades etc. Ugh, it's never been in my taste.

It's almost certainly a spin-off rather than a sequel. People will be very reluctant to switch over to a new game when they've spent potentially hundreds of dollars on skins and I'm sure Klei knows that.

But isn’t that the normal cycle of all games that monetize skins when they get a sequel?

Also its not like dst is going to be “shut down” and you won’t be able to play again or keep using your skins if they release a sequel. A lot of people will move to the new gane and some people will keep playing DST either cause they don’t like the new game much, nostagia, lower price or owning a device that can’t play the new game.

The game’s been out for long enough to have a sequel already.
But yeah outside of that, it could very well be just a spinoff of the franchise.  If this turns out to be the case I hope its multiplayer and fun.

Have you played Hollow Knight and Silksong, or are those not up your alley?

Those are two of the premier single player games in recent history (I know the first one isn’t recent).

I get really off-topic, don’t I.
