Crazy Gorilla
I am curious to see how many people unlock their insight points and affinities the way the game was intended (waiting 68 days and killing the required bosses) vs how many people skip unlocking their skills using a mod or commands and also why. This only really applies to PC players though, since I am not really sure console players have any good ways of skipping that. Crazy Gorilla
Personally, I skip them. I tried unlocking them normally but I just found it took too long and it was frustrating missing out on abilities that I could be having that would be very useful for early game. AliceShiki
I just play the game normally and they naturally unlock? Like... They just unlock by playing the game anyways, so it's not like I need to do any waiting or whatever. It just happens naturally as I play. When I say waiting I dont mean to imply that youre literally waiting for 9 hours, I meant more that you cant really speed up the process of gaining insigjt without commands or mods. Radicaljoe
I'll be honest, I've already got 5,000 hours. I guarantee you without a shadow of a doubt I've played every character for a full 70 days to meet that requirement. I'm going to get a lot more enjoyment from having all the points I already should have gotten. Klei doesn't have an individual character playtime tracker, so I understand why it didn't automatically retroactively allocate them all for me. I just skip forward and get the points that should already have been awarded to me. The one exception to this will be Wes. Because I haven't played 70 days of Wes, I will unlock all of those skills by playing as him. Dr. Safety
I used commands for Wilson's, Woodie's, and Wolfgang's. Then when I realized that they don't reset after the beta, I started earning them normally Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/165551-poll-how-many-people-legitimately-unlock-their-skill-points-on-skill-trees/#findComment-1814585 Share on other sites

Nowadays, I feel so dirty picking skill points that I unlocked through cheating, that I legitimately feel bad for using them. Like, "I didn't unlock Wigfrid's Battle Rond the NATURAL way, that's cheap and unfair, and I shouldn't get rewarded for cheating those points in." I can understand unlocking all points in beta, but Klei should seriously not allow you to keep those points by cheating them in. I feel there's a better method they can use to fight against this. Ridley
I haven't played all the skill tree characters yet, but I always let the insight gains happen naturally. They seem pretty frequent when you are going through the setup of the early game. Ugur01
Even though I don't like doing this, I use the command to try it out right away when it comes out in beta and they don't reset after the beta Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/165551-poll-how-many-people-legitimately-unlock-their-skill-points-on-skill-trees/#findComment-1814590 Share on other sites
WilsonHiggs
They couldn't think a less fun, attractive and engaging system I get that the trees were though to decrease players dropping the game by adding the typical roge-like rpg addictive system but I think they could achive the same, if no more, with a reward system based on tasks related to the character like they did with some perks like wigfrid's canister. Noobs have an incentive to go out of their confort zone and learn new stuff while veterans can rush these tasks to get some fun by doing it Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/165551-poll-how-many-people-legitimately-unlock-their-skill-points-on-skill-trees/#findComment-1814591 Share on other sites
Chewabacca
I don't care about skill trees enough to play a character exclusively for theirs, so there's not much point to me to skipping days for it. JustAPineapple
They should Definitely be made to reset after the beta. Personally I think it's more fun and rewarding to unlock them naturally. But using cheats to skip it, is perfectly valid. But I do recommend trying it out legitimately if you haven't. The experience could be improved though, and I genuinely think more goals to do throughout a skill tree, especially ones that could push new players out of their comfort zone is an unambiguously good addition. Like, wouldn't even need to be complex goals to be fun, I could see it having a similar appeal to doing a "bingo" race. Could you imagine if warly had a requirement like "eating every single crock pot dish" as a extreme example, maybe even applying it to several skills unlocking in milestones to give it a sense of progress. You'd have to grow almost every crop at some point, have to fight bee-queen, go to *so* many biomes, fish, make it to summer, engage with ocean content, and ultimately just try out so much of what the game has to offer. Something new players would chip away at from world to world as they gradually learn the game, and something that would be a unqiue goal of a play through for veteran players. A warly themed scavenger hunt really. Now that's just an example, and let me be clear, it is way too late for this unfortunately, especially for an extreme example like the above. Like, most of the skill trees are already done, and even if klei did retrofit this design to the completed skill trees, it is never happening in a way thats elegant because they weren't designed with this in mind. But it's lovely to imagine what could have been. Wawchik
When I just started playing I did actually play characters to unlock skills, but now I just skip days so I don't have to play the boring pre-skill tree character for like half an in-game year because the reason I picked the character was to try out their new stuff Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/165551-poll-how-many-people-legitimately-unlock-their-skill-points-on-skill-trees/#findComment-1814594 Share on other sites

Yeah they definately should reset your points after the beta but I dont think Klei necessarily needs to fight against this, its not hurting the game and people who dont want to wait will have to go out of their way to do it. I think people can play how they want and theres not really any negative side effects by wanting to skip them. Also im not 100% sure about this but if you do feel bad about not unlocking your insight the natural way im pretty sure theres a mod that lets you reset your points... I think anyways. Either way Klei should really give players the option to reset their skill points instead of resorting to mods. Well-met
the console is too easy to use and the engine is too full of exploits for there to be any real progression system in dont starve, so it doesn't really matter Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/165551-poll-how-many-people-legitimately-unlock-their-skill-points-on-skill-trees/#findComment-1814602 Share on other sites

Cheggf
I earn everything in the game legitimately, including refighting AFW & CC to get that part of the skill trees, but I see literally no point at all in waiting for many real hours doing nothing to get the skill points unlocked. If I actually earned them by doing things I would obviously earn them, but just loitering around is not fun or worthy of my time. Surely they could've found a more fun and engaging way of earning points instead of...sitting around and waiting...I guess Klei was afraid of giving players direct goals to accomplish, since they're against achievements and value personal goals, that this is the next best thing they could think of without directly telling the player what to do. But even then, this still isn't that good of a progression system. I wish they would've just put in direct goals but put in so many of them that it doesn't matter how you play, as long as you're active you'll get them. Things like use a science machine, use an alchemy engine, use an apss, kill a boss for the first time (there would be many different eligible bosses that each grant their own points), grow a crop of any size for the first time, grow a giant crop for the first time, fish a fish from the ocean for the first time, fish a special fish for the first time (every special fish awards its own point), etc. Then you would be able to just earn it naturally as you play, likely going faster if you spread out what you're doing and experience more of the game, or you could look at the list of objectives and try to formulate your own specific game plan on how you want to get the points.
