Before you plan next beta consider please for the duration of the beta to add variations of separate backpack and or clothing slot, Klei

Recommended Posts

Let's face it. Beta is a safe place to just test new content, things that work and don't work and through community feedback we could figure out if majority likes this idea or not. This is a radical change to gameplay, yes, but it also would shake up the meta to make things a little fresher as well as tuning things that feel overpowered (thermalstone) into more healthier way to play and have certain clothing and tools still have function within the game without being just there for vanity's sake.

We're getting clothing skins and decent amount of them so far, I wanna see this through for even those that don't play or do play with mods as well as me to see how we feel about adding that clothing slot. Klei does add and remove things on community feedback and maybe we could just put it into beta for a test and feel if the vibe is right for the game to have that additional slot added or not. Either by default or through progression of sorts.

I'm sure we can brainstorm while beta would be active, so I'm just dropping this here to see how you feel about the testing part and if Klei would feel bold enough to offer this change, considering we're getting decent QoL and gameplay changes for usually the better than worse.

I'm with you. Clothing is never, or rarely is, used.

I even suggested that clothing itself had a separated slot. Like we would continue to have a slot for backpack or armor or Amulet AND a second slot for (body) clothing

Honestly, I had never used any clothing apart from Hats (which has its "own" slot). I wanted to have the option to use those 'body' clothing

(As of today I use that mod to add some slots, however share the same slot as armor, which is fine.)

=shrugs= that has been my experience too. in pubs and on twitch i virtually never see clothing used. i cant even remember seeing anyone use clothing outside of armour even once this year and it is nearly march already

Read the topic, I explained people being generally interested in trying something done and changed or making clothing relevant. I often consider people's opinions who played this game for so many years and hours combined as well as perspective on public servers I've had through years of playing, streaming, talking about items and mechanics of the game to tell you tl;dr that clothing is crap and it needs relevance and people would be interested outside forums to have something done about it like clothing slot.

i mean, i wouldnt even go that far, just having a vanity slot like terraria has would do so much to encourage people to wear clothing items

If you use body slot clothing often, then you should simply express that, showing people your perspective and potentially convincing some on its many uses. Telling people they're "projecting hard bro" for their observation that few people use body clothing just reinforces the belief, because you will be written off as needlessly aggressive.

Personally I hardly use body clothing except for a rain coat if I need to go in the caves for multiple days in winter.

Playing the game the way a youtuber told you to doesn't mean it's "meta" it just means it reaches the masses easily and they won't know to try things out themselves.

The only reason people worship backpacks is because they can't stand running back to base often, but once you free yourself from that imaginary "limit" you get to experiment new combos that work very well.

Thermals are overrated and lose their temperature quicker than people think, whatever benefit you think they do is offset by all the extra campfires you churn out.

Eyebrella, bear vest and rain coat are genuinely insanely good

This entire topic is just meatballs all over again

Vanity slot is weird which I don't think it would fit in DST for things usually always have some function when used or worn. Would raise a lot more questions as to 'why we want this' when newbies to any experienced players would try wearing it and only get image alone...

We have regular body clothing for vanity when wearing nothing. Clothing with function brings gameplay changes and utility for convenience without the cost of inventory upgrades.

Klei have changed food meta drastically enough for it to be mostly to overwhelmingly positive enough. Your meatball and streamer strawman makes no damn sense.

I streamed in public servers for years and interacted with MANY people over the years considering everyone's ideas and what quirks should or not be changed.

Noone I play with would ever sacrifice inventory for how much usefulness and utility it brings alone just for a clothing item on body. NOONE. You can carry additional heating, cooling, weapon, so many resources just through inventory and upgrades that come from backpack to krampus sack feel really good and useful enough not to sacrifice EVER especially when most items in the game break fast and don't last.

Losing 8-16 item slots for a clothing item on body is absurd logic from you, cause clearly you undervalue a backpack quite a bit for no god damn good reason besides acting all snarky with us here with passive aggressive comments like we're some damn idiots that 'don't understand' cause we for SURE DAMN DO UNDERSTAND INVENTORY SLOT VALUE

i dunno bro i asked you nicely to develop your idea and you replied "fortnite" like please stop pretending you have the high road here. I think you're seeing insults where there are none.

The entry post has alot of words but they don't actually describe anything

Yeah they considered it then they realized it was a bad idea so they didn't do it.

The idea is simple, next or other beta we would test and try a backpack and or clothing slot added. People I know outside the forum seem interested. Older players seem interested in testing this or having this feature. If people like it - we keep it, we balance it, we give feedback, if people don't - then we yeet it and don't discuss it again.

I can accept a small change in the clothes and a special slot for them, ONLY FOR THEM, after all I don't see much difference between a thermal stone in the inventory and a piece of clothing in a specific slot, at least a test would be ok? But I COMPLETELY disagree with any idea that involves a special slot for backpacks and amulets, these items are extremely important and are a crucial part of the choices we can make, any change in this will result in an even more boring meta, having everything that matters on all the times will not make this game better in any way.

If you permanently use thermal stones you wouldn't use clothing even if you had the free slot, clothing insulation does not reduce the thermal stone heat loss. And I reject the notion of being allowed to wear amulets or body armour and backpack at the same time. Just use a mod if you like to play this way...

We could have it balanced to have restriction made on where amulet would go, since I assume that you're worried about the particular yellow amulet being worn anytime anyplace specifically since no other amulets are that useful being worn rn besides blue work for summer or rarely and barely for some specific fights if targets freeze fast.

Maybe backpack slot would not be usable if you wear an amulet. If you put on a piece of clothing or armor you'd have a slot open for additionally a backpack. Clothing and armor could be worn with the backpack but not amulets, locking away the additional thing you wear on body.

I'd very easily use Breeze Vest/Dapper Vest together with a Football Helmet in Winter if they were actually useful.

However, they're garbage, so I just use a Winter Hat or a Beefalo Hat together with a Log Suit instead.

It's not really a problem that requires a new equipment slot, the body choices just need to not be garbage. Puffy Vest is a good example of a non-garbage insulation option, but you can't get it in Autumn, so it ends up also being kinda pointless because by the time I can get a Puffy Vest, I'll already have insulation gear crafted.

Rain Coat is great though. No complaints about that one. Obviously you aren't going to use it if you have an Eyebrella, but otherwise, it's a great item.

Floral Shirt has the same problem of Puffy Vest of only being available in the season I need it, but it also spoils, so I'd need to craft it every Summer, which makes it pure garbage. Summer Frest is passable, but it's also annoying to go out of my way to keep on killing birds to get the Crimson Feathers just to get an item that is as good as a Winter Hat, but for Summer... And even then, it's only worth considering if you don't have an Eyebrella. Not to mention Luxury Fan can also help a lot with Overheating anyways... Oh, and one can also just use the Summer as their season to go explore the ruins in order to completely ignore the Summer mechanics.

So uhn... Agreed with Guille. Clothing just needs buffs, really.

how about we just buff clothing instead of giving every character a permanent increase to 23 inventory slots

How would we buff clothing then though? It's generally strong apart the starting cheaper gear. Though for someone like me it being strong doesn't really trade off inventory slots. I could be using combinations of cheaper gear and still keep inventory slots because I do a lot of things and gather everything let's say that I find useful.

I'm one of the outliers here but I actually use clothing items a lot more than backpacks nowadays. While I do lose out on inventory space, it makes dealing with the weather much less annoying and a bit more comfortable. Outside of those seasons, its nice to be able to wear something like a Tam while also being safe with armor instead having to select one or the other while wearing backpacks. I wouldn't say ones better than the other, though, as both have their pros and cons. Backpacks give you more inventory space, but dealing with the elements while keeping yourself protected can be kind of pain. Clothing items make surviving easier and even more comfortable, but you can't collect a ton of resources, forcing you to unload your inventory more often.

I mostly agree with this, if you hunt a koalafant on like the first two days of winter it's really good, the hibernation vest is even better but you can't get first winter without changing season settings so its good when it's too late, I think the best clothing items are really good and the problem is that the weaker options lag too far behind you'd never want to make winter hat or a catcoon hat because tamo and beefalo hat are just so much better and not really much harder to get.... Summer body clothing is bad, but summer has a lot of other options that are really good. I think a big problem with the notion that all clothing is bad comes from the fact that a lot of people default to thermal stones and have never even given good clothing a proper try ...

If it's extra inventory slots, I don't think it'd be a bad idea. Though, a part of me thinks that even with those buffs, they'd still prefer wearing a backpack. Like, if the puffy vest allowed you to carry six items, because it's 2 less than a backpack, it still wouldn't worth it to them, especially if they don't want to go out of their way to hunt koalephants.

I wouldn't call summer body clothing bad, far from it actually. The floral shirt is basically just an eyebrella you wear on your body, while the summer frest doesn't provide as much insulation as the shirt, it's useful to have when your shirt's spoiling or you revive and need emergency insulation, and the chilled amulet allows you to cool down on the go instead needing to sit at an endothermic fire for a while. It does kind of stink you can't stash a ton of items this way, but IMO, it's a price to pay for a more comfortable way of living.
