Ok let's say in an alternate universe where Wilson doesn't exist, who is the new face of Don't Starve?

Recommended Posts

I'm bored and I asked this somewhere else so I wanna give a hypothetical. Say in an alternate time-line Wilson doesn't exist, or at least isn't the "main character", who's your pick as the new protagonist for Don't Starve? And what's your case as to why you picked them? Any reasons, story, gameplay, personal bias, all allowed, so long as you have a reason for em.

Some simple ground rules for this:

1. It has to be a playable character.

2. DLCs/Multiplayer exclusives are allowed, so long as they're playable.

3. Whoever you pick is allowed to exist in both games, so you don't have to change your answer if your pick is only in one of them.

4. Given his role in the story, you can't choose Maxwell (sorry Maxwell stans).

Alright gimme your best candidates if you have any

I think following Wilson, the protagonist order is roughly

Winona -> Willow -> Webber = Wendy  -> Wickerbottom.

Winona is the most lore relevant, with established relationships with both Shadow & Lunar alignments.

Willow is in some ways the Luigi, costarring in inevitable, being the second character unlocked IIRC in DS and generally being prominent in marketing.

Wendy & Webber are the marketable, popular & well known characters with some prior history to the constant, while also being grounded enough to engage with the narrative.

Wickerbottom appears a lot in lore developments (Like eye of the storm, forge & gorge) and seems to have a lot of knowledge of the world at large, while also seeming to have a role as a "leader" of sorts (mentoring the kids, helping Woodie with his curse, etc).

Most other characters are a bit too gimmicky to works as leads imo. Maybe Warly could work? But idk.

Even setting my bias aside, probably Willow. She's basically the poster co-protagonist.

Or Winona.

Willow for DS stuff in general I'd reckon, Winona for her push on DST's more narrative-ish focused direction!

So far this is the most well indepth reply I've seen. Love you got a whole listed order here that's a new one. Feel like this is a pretty accurate list of most likely candidates going down (tho I'd probably put Wendy just a tad bit above Webber due to her having stronger connections to certain aspects of the lore like Maxwell).

"You can't choose Maxwell" not even I would have chosen him, since it seems to me,  game often lean towards using characters the player consider positive and that are not perceived as kind of villainous character for a mascot role x3 So I also would have chosen Winona since the start of DST for singleplayer I also would have used Wendy.

Actually it probably REALLY would be Willow at least for the single player DS, after all she kind of seemed to be: Playable character but it is the FEMALE option (considering how colour-type she is basically looking like 'Wilson but a girl')

willow is probably half japanese, no evidence to support that , but it would be funny if is real

I don't know honestly and I don't really know what it's refering to to be funny but if you say so I suppose it is funny in a way that my mind is oblivious about

Oh I know that, in fact that's exactly why I feel like he would never be an option so I agree there. I just left that in cause the place I posted this before had a few Maxwell stans in it and I didn't want them to suggest him as a joke or something lol

But if Wilson never existed then who would be constantly treated like a joke by the dst character rework department ;(

Well we still got Wes the joke survivor just bully him a little more I guess

Hang on, does anyone have a time machine? I need to go assassinate Wilson before he becomes the face of the game so that we get a cat as the main character instead.

Unironically Wormwood would be a good candidate. Not only is the world he finds himself in alien and mysterious to him, there's also all these people who claim to have been kidnapped and put there through some sort of deal. But they're the only friendly ones, so might as well stick with them, while the moon and it's influence beats in his chest...

Now THIS is the type of answer I was looking for this is such an interesting choice! Legit Wormwood would be a fascinating option. You're playing as someone who is actually a native to this strange world, but due to how he was created it's still completely new to him just as it is for the player, and he gets to discover and learn how to survive along with all these other alien beings who are basically in the same position as he is.

That combined with the fact that he still has his connections to Alter and whatever influence the moon has would make Worm an interesting protag.

This gives me Stray vibes, where the gameplay is just you walking around and the story is told in your surroundings that you just happen to be in the middle of.

If I had to choose, I'd say Wagstaff even though he isn't playable in multiplayer (...yet). If I misunderstood the rules, and that option violates them, then Winona
