Why can't we use salt to make Jerky more fresh?

It really does not make any sense.

It cannot be put in the salt box, cannot be refreshed by using salt, cannot be put inside Polar Bearger Bin, I don't know... The Polar Bearger Bin I can understand, but why can't we salt our jerky? Or put it inside the salt box??

I'm still so upset Warly salt spice is so bad, 25% extra health gain at most is only an extra +15 health if you used it on Waffles or something similar. It's good for beefalo healing food I guess, but still, pretty bad generally.

My assumption for salt not repairing jerky is that it already had all the water dried out of it, so there's no water for the salt to suck out and restore freshness. I don't know about the saltbox though, keeping it in pure salt to avoid moisture going back in seems reasonable to me.

Jerky really needs better storage conditions. Bundles just won't do alone, at least having them in salt boxes for a very long preserve would be nice.

After all, in right conditions, it can last for basically an extremely long time like any other preserved food. And survivors are smart enough to know more of food security and building things to keep resources last and be stable.

jerky does need some sort of "rework" like, do you see people even makin drying racks?

Drying racks are so expensive early game, and by the time you'll have the spare grass to make it, you might already have better sources of sanity/health or a saltbox to store meat. it would be cool if Jerky was maybe special in a crockpot, as of right now it's no different than a regular/cooked meat right?

actualy you can turn fish into normal meat, wich can be worth something because with fish you cant make meaty stews only surfnturf...even if no turf was used...and it refills less hunger wich is better for some characters like wolfgang, warly, and wortox

"see" people do it? not really because public servers are a reset-fest of nonsense

in single player worlds? yes absolutely I know people who rely on jerky.

you sure not played on the servers i play on, "reset fest of nonsense" you say that as you are in bad faith of the players rolling back every second day....

single player worlds? thats not the question, and who realy rely on jerky of all things? you got to show me your evidence

I use Jerky and Small Jerky when playing with friends.

They're useful sources of HP and Sanity, and when your friends are bad at combat and get scared of Treeguards, you tend to run out of Pieroggis all the time no matter how many you make, so having extra sources of it is always welcomed.

And when said friends are bad enough at handling Sanity that they actually use stuff like Tents, you tend to appreciate the extra Sanity of the Jerkies and Small Jerkies.

Basically, I can understand experienced players finding Jerky and Small Jerky completely useless, but I think they have a purpose in the game. Mostly for players who are old enough to know how to make a Drying Rack, but new enough to still struggle a lot with combat.

Maybe you wouldn't be running out of pierogis if you weren't wasting your meat on jerky. :wilsoalmostangelic:

There's always some moisture left, unless you use a vacuum chamber, which the survivors do not have. The salt also not only sucks out water that bacteria need, it disrupts electrolyte balance between their cell and the surroundings.

It also alters the pH and disrupts cellular function in high doses.

Its funny how jerky lasts less in fridge compared to raw meat put in salt boxes.

On related note. Idk what upsets me more:

Being able to put sweet fruit in salt boxes. Ew.

Or honey actually spoiling this fast in DST.

Honey should have shelf life similar to a Powder Cake.  :wilson_laugh:

you should try fruit or chocolate with a little of salt. Salt is a flavor potentiator, doesnt have flavor by its own
is commonly use for cakes or muffins so they taste better

salt makes sweetness stronger, that's why salted caramel is a thing

Not the same. A little bit of salt is used in caramel and things like sweet pastries.

Now dunk bunch of fresh juicy berries in salt barrel and leave it for a day or two then eat them and tell me how "sweet" they taste.

Removing water with salt helps to sense sweetness.
One common case: watermelon.

Spoiler

Wait, we don't have any dried fruit?

I like making 6 to 8 , mostly as a way to preserve rotting meats and monster meats. Then when jerky sometimes gets in the red expiring range I usually just turn them into meaty stews or whatever really. Good way to buy some extra time with spoilage imo.

Also I always carry a stack of fresh jerky in my "emergency" Bundling Wrap stash.
