I have voted no, but if I ever found a reason to use those mods, I would probably use them. I don't care whether a mod "takes away the original way the game was intended to play or not. I just enable mods that are fun to ME. Or sometimes mods that have some use. But most of my mods I have suscribed are more about my personal fun than for being useful.

This used to be different 10-7 years ago when I didn't like dying and most of the mods I used where about making the game easier (e.g. the above finding stuff etc. was a priority, especially as I wanted to finish adventure mode as fast as possible to unlock playable Maxwell). Meanwhile I prefer playing singleplayer DS without mods enabled, just because I don't care about "unlocking" or "experiencing" something anymore, I just want to randomly see how long I can survive, mostly in a minimal-way. I only plan to add some cosmetic mod stuff to my singleplayer DS in future.

I have decided about 2 years ago that whenever I want to play with mods, I use DST for this purpose, mostly because I remembered I still had the multiplayer version and that I needed a reason to occasionally play it.

Do you mean the mods mentioned above in your poll? I fear I have never heard of them, but from what you describe they do I fear they would DISTRACT me more from playing than they would actually help me (I also avoid using the normal map already, so any mod having to do with the map is probably not being used by me. Last time I used a map-related mod was many years ago in DS something called where is my beefalo)

i use zoom but not the other mods listed(i actually dont even know what those mods are, lol), generally the mods i use are immersion mods or help with mobile hoarding like animal variety, colourcubes, spussi and 99stack, the most game-breaking mod i use is either icebackpack/perish settings(no rot in backpacks/iceboxes) or don't-drop-everything(you keep your inventory on death) and that is just because ds/t are the only games i play where your food rots and your stuff gets thrown to the floor in a pile instead of kept in your invo or protected in a grave marker

i mean, i would take it with a grain of salt. a lot of the forumites seem to think using the actual game settings is somehow "cheating" even when they are outright begging the staff to make optional available settings part of the default settings so they dont have to bear the indignity or pressing more than two buttons.

Thanks to you suggesting it once I have don't-drop-everything added to my standard mods, too, as it is actually quite useful, since I struggle to pick up something specific when everything gets scattered around my corpse.

I on the other hand love content mods, in the meaning of mods that change the gameplay / expand on it (e.g. the plague mod, injuries mod, etc.)

honestly I wish there was a DST version with more dark realism, but since there isn't I am glad those kind of mods exist.

The other kind of mods I usually always use in DST are mods that place more setpieces and make (mostly hostile) creatures appear outside their home biomes, since this makes the world very alive. Though sometimes I notice the mods don't quite work exactly as intended and end up overdoing it, so I wish DST didn't remove the creatures spawning outside their biomes on highest number setting. But I see they did it to reduce the lags, so if I want to play with the original function this one gladly still is in the singleplayer game.

I play between nintendo switch version were there are no mods and the game is harder, to playing sometimes on pc were I go full cheat mode; moggles nightvision, zoom out to see entire map to find ruins and lunar super quick.

I will say the Nintendo switch version does feel 100% more authentic without any client mods.

Altho the best thing about the pc cheaty client mod is no one can stop me using it on public servers. This speeds up getting to the fun bits like outspeeding other players in killing ancient guardian and what not.

I personally feel the klei official servers should prevent client mods for the full vanilla experience but since klei is happy to let voidwalking remain in the game I feel no guilt using a cheaty client mode on their servers.

If you're talking about Klei servers/general vanilla stuff, I tend to use the following:

  • Rain timer. I use this just so I can know how much I need to rush to get to Pearl's to give her an umbrella during autumn so that completing her quest pre-winter is possible.
  • Action queue. It's great to be able to just tab out and do something else while I chop/mine/tend/till/plant/craft (it delegates the mindless repetitive clicking to my computer, basically).
  • Combined status HUD. I like seeing values for things, and it helps to know exactly when to eat hot dragon chili salad/asparagazpacho so I don't freeze.
  • A zoom mod. I don't remember the name, but I like being able to see what's loaded around me. I honestly find the default view claustrophobic nowadays because I'm so used to it.
  • Ruins cycle timer. This is really just for ruins rushing and lets me make decisions like rushing in during the end of dawn phase instead of waiting for it to be passive phase.
  • An attack filter mod that stops the game from idiotically making me attack the random crow that landed next to me instead of the raid boss I'm fighting. It just contextually filters out certain mobs from being targeted by default; you have to click them or use specific weapons if you want to attack them.
  • Environment pinger. This honestly should be in the game by default if you ask me, even if it's in the form of a midgame/lategame item. It's just way better than trying to fiddle around with landmarks and compasses to tell someone where something is.
  • A mod that lets me prevent specific characters from appearing on the selection screen/item collection screen (I don't like Wortox's existence for thematic reasons and prefer to ignore it).
  • Geometric placement so I can build prettier.
  • A mod called "base projection". It's kind of like litematica for Minecraft in that it lets me put down a hologram of a base I want to build and then place things to fit the exact blueprint. I do this to get my ten crock pot/five fridge kitchen placed right so everything's accessible from the central salt box.
  • A Wormwood bloom predictor mod (he really should have a meter for that by default) if I'm playing him.

When starting a new world for solo play, I do sometimes use observer camera and/or map reveal mods to determine if the seed's one that I like the landmass/biome distribution of or not. If I don't like it, I regen until I get one I do like for a long-term world. Then I do a rollback so my map progress is reset (my memory for that kind of thing sucks and I'm only doing a cursory look to know if it meets certain criteria, like having a triple mac biome) and I have to explore to reveal it. I do also play with major content mods in solo - namely, I've been enjoying the combination of Tropical Adventures and Heap of Foods lately, and I like playing as the modded character Wirra (who I've further altered to have Warly's abilities and penalty with double the food memory time, making her a harder Warly to compensate for all the extra food choices).

I just use stuff like improved HUD, Global Positions, Minimap and whatnot. Basically convenience stuff.

And character mods if the characters feel balanced or underpowered. I don't like the OP character mods because they feel boring.

The rest I just don't feel very interested in.

I couldn't imagine a world where I played with any of the above mods, ahah.

Even health bars alone seem dastardly and out of this world. I couldn't. My meek heart would shatter! Like a... a thing! A thing that shatters!

I like to use mods what I considered Qol to me, like Mini-map because I have the bad habit to open the Map every 0.0001 seconds I don’t even need to open it that much is like open the fridge even when you’re not hungry is so weird, Geometric Placement help me to place my bushes and structures all perfect making my base pretty when I'm playing alone, gesture Wheel because y'know, on the other hand combined status and Item Info probably the "most" cheating mods I have, then Wormwood Bloom Predictor, Epic Health Bar, Beefalo domestication progress or any related again Qol, and for last when I'm playing with others or in public servers any Ping Mod and Status announcement.

I'm surprise Night Vision is a thing I never hear of it and I have to check the Workshop to even know what this thing do, i can't say is cheating because I also use Mini-map mod who kinda do the same, and Observer maybe I could use it to make video clips but for looking biomes around i guess my mini-map also do that.

Uh funny the mini-map is kinda overpowered now thinking about it but I refuse to go back to my “opening the map addiction” haha.

I'm amazed no one has made a client side X marks the spot that glows on the map, or rather, ignores fog of war.

Would this fit?

I have the exact same problem. When using mini-map I ended up just opening up the main big map every 3 secs anyway.

Old habits die hard. :wilsoalmostangelic:

I play on a steamdeck handheld which plays like if your playing on console with mods

When I play by myself I have the epic health bar mod enable with hp only showing for bosses not smaller mobs and if I want to test a modded character I create a duplicate of the world I'm using to test them out there

If I'm playing with others I ask if they want the global positioning mod enable to help with exploration if not that is fine too, I have the healthbar enabled on the server with/without someone and no custom characters enabled

The zooming function I have no mod for that because the steamdeck has 4 buttons on the back of it 2 on each side that you can change the button inputs to zoom in and out with all you have to do is change your controls for that

Not really important but I also change two of those buttons separately that allows me to pull up the keyboard to communicate/emote if I'm playing with others on a public server it is slow I will not deny that since I have to use the touch screen to type, nonetheless I love it I played dst on the console so this is no different from that but with mods

Lastly no night vision at all dst provide many ways to counter the darkness and me personally I feel like having a mod for night vision ruins the threat of nighttime but I understand everyone plays different which I respect since you can have fun and enjoy the game your way which matters :wilson_love:
