BezKa
I did my best to express my happiness and joy for every update and talk about things I like and love in DST these past 4 years. And now just because I don't like certain parts of the game I'm being accused of hating the whole thing. Thanks I guess There's a whole thread where people that are being constantly accused of "hating the game" explain that they love it and want it to be better. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean they hate the game or want to ruin it for everyone else. The forums are a space for everyone, devs know how to listen to feedback, pick things to take into account for future updates and implement them and have done so for years. Just because someone comes in and reminds everyone that skill trees still suck and the game would benefit from removing them doesn't mean you have to agree or even react. AliceShiki
Uhn... Try reading the 2nd post of this thread? And like, see the number of likes in that 2nd post and stuff. So, positivity is drowned out by the obnoxiously vocal and very small minority of people who keep playing this game despite evidently hating it. Thats certainly a take. The context of these forums is heavily shaped around dont starve when it was going through early access, i dont know if they existed prior to dont starve for eets munchies and mark of the ninja but klei really found their audience with dont starve. During that time it was encouraged to discuss the game and its updates to help with balancing and bug fixing. so lot of us older forum goers are used to an informal open forum for discussing updates and balancing, calling fair crticisms negative just because you dont agree or understand where it comes from is pretty short sighted judgement. Auth
2 hours ago, SaltyPepper2231 said: How come nobody really likes this game anymore, I always see posts on how bad the updates and stuff are. Being disappointed in or disliking new updates/content for any reason does not automatically mean someone dislikes or hates the game as a whole. It's worth reading the whole of what people say for full context rather than try to generalize any statements, because more often than not, people are not saying they dislike the game in their full thoughts. To pull up what I wrote from a remarkably similar thread from earlier this month: Spoiler Quote I love the game. I have loved the game for years. I will continue to love the game. I love it so dearly, I nearly consider it to be an extension of myself. I feel so strongly, that I consider my love for Don't Starve and Klei a part of my identity. I would consider it genuinely difficult for most people to love the game to the same degree that I do. Nobody has to, though, for me to consider them just as valid as I consider myself. Not that it's a competition. Don't take it that way; this is a difficult idea to express. This is a response not just to this thread, but to the dozens of threads like this that I have seen. Forgive it's more general and aimless nature. In this, when I refer to "you", I mean the general "you", not any user specifically. I hate the direction it is taking. Greatly. For several reasons. Most of which I have long since lost the patience to articulate, knowing my voice will be, at worst, shunned, and at best, completely ignored. This, by no means, is saying I hate the game, nor even dislike it. It is a dangerous idea to confuse these concepts. It is downright poisonous to believe it. It is impossible to say that those who still have the patience and willpower left to criticize what they do not like, despite, in some cases, the years of neglect, constant community dogpiling, or worse, hate the game. No matter what they even say to themselves. There is no way they could remain here without loving the game in their own unique way. Not to say anything of those whose wills had finally gotten whittled down to a point where they felt they were taken so far for granted that they couldn't stand to exist in the community any longer. Not for hate, but for heartbreak and frustration. Or those who never even spoke in the first place, who silently watched what they loved either take a back seat, get forgotten, or even destroyed. There are people out there like this. There are many communities outside of the forums. I've seen them, I've been in them. Even just smaller talks with random players, this sentiment is not alien. It is very real. They exist. And it is impossible to truly call that, any of that, hate. Not unless your only definition of it is the surface level, trying to subconsciously write them off, label them as an intermittent, loud group of pessimistic whiners, and say that they are nothing more than hollow haters with no point, no skin in the game, no care for the game or what they say. I am just as entitled to my opinion on the game as anyone else is. I just love it in a different way than others do. As I am allowed to. As anyone is allowed to. There shouldn't be a thread trying to dismiss people as haters who shouldn't be listened to. That those who "love" the game clearly outnumber those who "hate" it, so they should just go kick rocks and shut up. That their opinion doesn't matter because the power of your specific type of love prevails. Threads like these just make me more sad than anything else. Again, this isn't just a response to this thread or user, but it's a general response to all threads and people with this kind of mindset. I mean none of this personally, just generally. Please try to consider this, as I consider you. It is very upsetting to see some people, at this point, downright refuse to see any additional nuance to the situation other than someone criticizing MUST mean they think everything is bad. They MUST be hostile, they MUST be irrational, they MUST be illegitimate, they MUST be... so on and so forth. Just as there are some cases of toxic negativity, there are cases of toxic positivity, too. I do my best to not linger on it at all. If I did, it'd be just as easy for me to blindly label others the same way, as irrational nincompoops who can't understand the clearly amazing & superior point of view that I have. But that's not even close to the case. Not in any way, not in any direction. If I get a dozen of donuts, but some of them have a filling I don't like the taste of, I don't automatically hate donuts. It would be very silly to assume I did, right? It'd be even sillier for someone to go up to me, see that I haven't eaten some donuts, and then start saying "Oh, I see. You hate my favorite flavor of donuts. That means you hate all donuts, don't you? How about you never get donuts again if you hate them so much, huh? You don't appreciate them enough." But at the same time, it'd be just as silly for me to assume that anyone who asks for more filled donuts in their box is a loon who must live without the ability to taste. However at the same time, if I keep getting served those donuts, I might want to speak up and say "Hey, I don't care for this flavor" on the off-chance that the kitchen might, at least, stop sticking them in my box, or maybe even give me more of the flavors I do like instead. But I also have no problem with the occasional batches of filled donuts. I mean, I can't be eating donuts all the time. Other people need to eat and I gotta watch my waist. We all came here, likely, because we enjoyed the game. We all want to see the game improved. There's a difference in opinion, of course, because of the sheer width of the playerbase. What some like in the game, others do not. But people should be allowed to like and dislike what they want without being automatically glossed over because what they want isn't good enough to be considered as valid as someone else. I have learned so much by reading the thoughts of others. It's so very easy to become overly rigid in one's thoughts and become hostile to anyone who dares think otherwise. Instead, by trying to work with others and collaborate on ideas constructively, you can come to new understandings of viewpoints you never would have even considered otherwise. And honestly? It's super fun, too! I love to see lots of ideas for different mechanics, from both people who do and don't like them, as it lets me imagine solutions that take both positions clearly into view to make for something that is far more nuanced and satisfying than I could've come up with just by myself. It's human nature to be closed-minded, so I can't blame anyone for thinking that way, but all I can continue to do is encourage people to broaden their horizons. I don't dislike the game at all. I think it's amazing. But I think it can be even better, too. My line of thinking is just currently not aligned with others, so that's why my feedback most often comes as criticism. Constructive criticism. If you want to see positivity on the forums though, it's often not in threads, but in posts underneath them. Update threads' posts are always covered in praise and good feelings. Threads like these have people showing up in the dozens to claim their own love and support for the game. It's still here, you just need to know where to look. Threads on the other hand are just tools to start new conversations in the first place, so that's often how criticism gains its footing for discussion, otherwise it gets drowned out in the noise. Again, it's all a matter of looking where you need to in order to see what you want. 1 hour ago, finn from human said: We used to have an entire off-topic forum here where people could talk about anything they want, be that other games, real life, tv shows, anything, and it let people who log onto the forums every day have a place to talk about whatever and ambiently bond with other users, rather than having to constantly think about DST and what they may or may not like about it, leading to an overall friendlier environment. I loved status updates and the off-topic area just as much as the next guy(probably more than if you know my history), and I do miss them severely, but they weren't exactly a magical place where everyone joined hands and sang kumbaya unless looked at through the nostalgia of the rosiest of glasses. The small groups that would form there would usually splinter off into their own respective groups and cliques anyway, and the majority of users who came to have continuous or random/sporadic discussions on Klei games hardly even touched the place. It was just a handful of the regulars at any given time who liked the community, and I find it dubious to say that the O-T Area's existence shaped the average forumer's way of providing feedback in the game discussion areas. There's still Maxwell Memes, which is a communal silly zone, and it doesn't seem to really be shifting anything around in any one way or another. If you spent most of your time in the O-T Area in the first place, though, then I can definitely see where the idea that the forums have all of a sudden become a warzone comes from. But as someone who's been here a while, they really, truly, actually have been like this since forever. When one crowd dies out, in comes the next. But I could be wrong, and "make up a reason to ban the person above you" was the glue that held this place together. In which case, ban Auth for making uncomfortably long posts. 1 hour ago, DegenerateFurry said: The reason's mostly that if someone like me - who actually enjoys the more recent updates and likes the direction the game's going in - says anything positive, the forum's resident Negative Nancys come around and start a mud-flinging match. If someone is breaking the forum's rules, you should report them. If it's just a disagreement though, then that's all it is. Regardless, there's no need to get yourself dirty in someone else's mud, just keep on doing you. People will come to their own conclusions, but standing up to it by being constructive yourself or using the proper forum tools to set an example of what you'd like to see is always the best course of action for inspiring or encouraging others to make for a more friendly environment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, this optimism doesn't come cheap. Yes, this is what me being optimistic looks like. Not sure how many more of these kinds of posts I can churn out this month. I can't tell since I am not much in touch with any internet communities, but maybe a way to explain this, is how (I can only speak from a sort of mindset I notice among the people from my personal life, which means only people from my offline life, but it probably is a general mindset) people seem to get "bored" easily, always in search for THE NEXT EXPERIENCE, always looking to get THE NEXT GAME, THE NEXT FILM, THE NEXT VIDEO, THE NEXT BOOK. Something I can't really relate to a lot, but it's a pattern I have noticed with increased frequency that people are constantly asking me: Have you heard of *something new or something similar to something else*, do you know *insert a thousand different things here*, or you must get/see/hear *insert at least a million things here*. Evelo
Wonder if we are checking the same Forum. I see a lot of positivity with some negativity sprinkled in. I know I am negative about things (Skillsets, Celestial Portal, lack of meaningful survival additions, etc) but I still love the game. The most recent update was really awesome. Winona feels like a legitimate character (even though I think a lot should have been made baseline rather than via skills), The Crab King rework is fun imo, significantly better and more engaging than old CK, Marotters are cute and annoying as heck and I hate them in a loving way, and we finally got some better indicators of where the Moon Quay island is, which is awesome. Tbf, plenty of games don't have that much replayability. Like, DST is certainly a game you can spend many hours on, but I honestly have no idea what people do in 1000 days worlds or by playing solo over and over again doing boss rushes and the like. That would bore me out of my mind. DST to me feels like a game whose main replayability would come from playing with different friend groups and enjoying how things go with them. As in... The multiplayer aspect of DST is the only thing that makes me stick with it for longer periods of time. If someone isn't that much into multiplayer, then they're stuck with single player games, which are all designed with a limited amount of replayability in mind... Maybe you can do more runs with different builds and whatnot, maybe you can try challenge runs... But eventually the game just runs its course... And even then, you probably will only do more than 1 run of a game if you happened to really love it. So... It's just normal to keep on hopping around between multiple games? They just have a ceiling of how much time they can take out of you before you finish their content... And at that point the game is just done, so you jump to the next one. Honestly, the only times I remember going at a game again without any specific ideas for an interesting challenge run or for an unique build were when I was working on the game's wiki or making a guide for the game. Otherwise I just wouldn't see any point. And well, with stuff like movies, books and whatever, they're definitely meant to be more of a one-and-done kind of experience, so it's natural to keep finding new ones. What I meant was people who actually buy 10 steam games and 4 different DVDs per week (this is not made up, this is several people I know) and then I wonder do they EVER actually play or watch them for more then 3 seconds? Apart from that, I see what you mean about DST. I mostly start small-challenges all the time (like I do in Solo DS....only that there it is playing until I die which can vary greatly) while on DST solo play I often create several worlds shortly after another when I see my challenge has turned into permanently being ghost. I am actually not doing any combat, so I have still LOTS of stuff to "discover" in DST (not that I ever feel like doing so, unless it's the only way to survive or I am lucky with having the right items / follower number at hand) But I DO see what you mean. ....I mean there will eventually come the day in DST that you probably have terraformed everything and build everything and planned everything and mapped everything, so I DO see where the thirst for new new new new new comes from. But at least those people proof they are still interest in THIS game, or else they wouldn't be contributing their ideas after all, do they? So basically the people who still PLAY DST even after "running out of ideas", can't actually "hate" the game after all. ...so what I meant is that the impression people "hate" the game may come from it not following the "trend" of moremoremoremoremore as fast as possible that many media do? Or maybe this is just the impression a person like me has that rather sticks to a handful in-depth fandom interests instead of always searching for a new option. (granted this only applies to media. I am guilty of this in different ways. Hand me a 100 different artisan crafts / art things and I will literally jump from one project / several ones/ wip / wip / wip to the other.) Echsrick
love can go many ways, in a way complaining about one thing in this game, for example: the planar stuff, i dont realy like it and think it could of been handled better, its like caring for something you like and then suddenly there being something not soo good in the game and addressing to it, naturaly it will sound rather displeasure for the game, but what good comes out of being only a yes sayer? I have an Xbox catalog of 1274 games, many of which I have bought and have barely even played, some of them even critically acclaimed major hits- Like the Witcher 3, Skyrim, Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, etc.. Of those games there are currently 60 actually installed on my Xbox the largest majority being free to play games with a battle pass (Fortnite, Fallguys, Multiversus, Apex Legends, etc..) The rest are mostly survival games, sandbox games, or RogueLites/likes with near infinite levels of replay value. For DS and DST to still be installed on my Hardrive when I’ve got critically acclaimed best sellers that I’ve BARELY played at all, has to be evidence that Klei is doing something right, right?? Or maybe I’m just super picky in the types of games I choose to play. Yeah, I don't think the people seriously invested in the game hate it. Sometimes you may really love a game, but take a break from it simply because you ran out of things to do... Then you come back again once new things appear. My brother does it all the time with Path of Exile, for example. And... I can't say I see much hate for this game either. Granted, I don't frequent that many places where people discuss DST in the first place, but I just don't see it, so... Yeah, I think this game is loved plenty. 45 minutes ago, Mike23Ua said: For DS and DST to still be installed on my Hardrive when I’ve got critically acclaimed best sellers that I’ve BARELY played at all, has to be evidence that Klei is doing something right, right?? Hi.
This is just MY opinion but I really enjoyed the recent updates as well. I don't mind that CK is "too easy" I rather him be easy than what he used to be, I find Marotters to be kinda cute and charming, and I really like the Winona and Wurt skill trees. This may be off topic but I have seen a lot of people "complain" about the difficulty of Don't starve together, sometimes they will say something along the lines of "skill trees are making dst a lot easier" and I kinda agree in some way, BUT if you find dst to be too easy for your liking then I would suggest to make your own unique challenges to make dst harder. For example, you could just not use skill trees or you could try to CC rush or FW rush (Or science-less ruins rush which I really recommend). Anyways, I have noticed that sometimes I can't even tell that an update is well liked or not because the amount of people that complain over the smallest things. What annoys me the most is that when I see some people say something along the lines of "The forums are getting too toxic", people get way too upset. I have also noticed that people in public dst servers tend to have different, more positive views on dst then people on the forums. Now I'm not saying every negative critique is bad. When Year of the dragon fly released many people (including myself) were understandably disappointed. Even though I said I don't mind that CK is EASY, I (and some others) still have a problem with the fight. You could also argue that the Moon quay "warnings" don't fix the problem of pirate raids. In short, negative criticism is just as important as positive criticism but there needs to be a balance and sometimes people tend to over dramatize certain issues. Super sorry that this turned into a long rant and please, feel free to disagree because this is just my opinion and I'm sorry if this is a little off topic. And the singleplayer don’t starve forum is as dead as Abigail. I personally don’t think it’s bad, just after playing the game for a long time I get bored. When you're on the forums you're not really gonna see nearly as much praise for the game as criticisms, since that's kind of what they're made for. People don't necessarily hate it, and the people that don't see a need to make a forums account to give feedback probably very much like the game. DS is a finished game and that's why there's not really much feedback to give hence the inactivity, and the game gets an okay amount of players regardless of that But aside from that, the negative minority will always stand out. You're not really gonna memorize someone who's positive about the game nearly as much as someone who's negative and critical about it. DegenerateFurry
6 hours ago, Gotheran said: That's certainly a take. The context of these forums is heavily shaped around don't starve when it was going through early access, I don't know if they existed prior to don't starve for eets munchies and mark of the ninja but Klei really found their audience with don't starve. During that time it was encouraged to discuss the game and its updates to help with balancing and bug fixing. so lot of us older forum goers are used to an informal open forum for discussing updates and balancing, calling fair criticisms negative just because you don't agree or understand where it comes from is pretty short sighted judgement. There's a big difference between fair criticisms of the game ("I think this should be different and here's why and how") and outright negativity (making deliberately inflammatory thread titles; calling Klei lazy devs despite them constantly doing major free updates to their game that only has optional cosmetic microtransactions; mindlessly hating on skill trees just for being character updates; or the people who actually go into threads like "what do you like about your main" and pull an "um, actually" on people who just talk about the things they enjoy). The latter is what I'm calling "Negative Nancys". benfroyobro9381
These forums are kinda the place to rant so it becomes a bit of an echochamber. The casual to general fanbase still loves this game and it's one of the most critically acclaimed Indies(not anymore with tencent i believe but it feels right to say lol) of all time. Look on steam or yt. It's almost all universal praise and most of the criticism comes from veterans and long time players. JustAFlower
As a silence folk of the community, I love this game to bits and everything from Don't Starve DLCs to DST, this game sparked within me all my survival joy, I bought this game and all just 2 years ago and played DST when there was Maxwell Rework, and honestly, besides the Wilson skill tree torch stuff, this game is approximately flawless for me. I love the Celestial portal, that DRFLY event, the other skill trees etc.. Is it because I'm no such an old DST gamer to really understand how to see this game, who knows? But I'm gonna enjoy this game even with some mistakes and piles of manures that I don't really like because man, I love this franchise and I can't just focus on the bad stuff when there's so much good. arubaro
If someone hate the game they wouldnt be here wasting time giving feedback or criticizing the game. Do you prefer eco chambers of people licking devs butts or a diversity of opinions so devs have all kind of views? Please, a minimum of logic... This forum is far from being a hate echochamber or anything close to it. In every update you can read a lot of positive comments and dev support Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/158422-how-come-everyone-hates-this-game/page/2/#findComment-1736806 Share on other sites
