How come everyone hates this game

Recommended Posts

How come nobody really likes this game anymore, I always see posts on how bad the updates and stuff are. And the singleplayer don’t starve forum is as dead as Abigail. I personally don’t think it’s bad, just after playing the game for a long time I get bored.

The reason's mostly that if someone like me - who actually enjoys the more recent updates and likes the direction the game's going in - says anything positive, the forum's resident Negative Nancys come around and start a mud-flinging match. So, positivity is drowned out by the obnoxiously vocal and very small minority of people who keep playing this game despite evidently hating it.

WRONG I ADORE the game. I just don't really feel like playing with any of the skilltree or combat content x) (besides Wilson's content)

About the single player game: This is my main game, my absolute favourite game. I just haven't been active in this forum (despite having an account) back when the singleplayer forum was probably still active

Extremly sad....maybe people need to fill the arts and so on forum more to shift more focus on how much the fandom and the game is still loved? And not just having discussion about *character / item xyz needs blablablubb* all the time?

We used to have an entire off-topic forum here where people could talk about anything they want, be that other games, real life, tv shows, anything, and it let people who log onto the forums every day have a place to talk about whatever and ambiently bond with other users, rather than having to constantly think about DST and what they may or may not like about it, leading to an overall friendlier environment. Whenever that entire section got deleted, though, the forums got observably a lot worse: there is NOTHING to do here except argue about this video game all day, so anyone who can't keep up with that (or doesn't want to) has faded into background noise by now, leaving only people with the most passionate (and thus often negative) takes. People will say the forums have always been like this, but it really did change once a good 80% of the place was deleted.

And that's great!

(I probably would too, if it was about the characters I play which are obviously just the two idiots from the secret knowledge short)

(but Maxwell for me is of no interest anymore since I have "my own" Maxwell now, so the only one left for me is Wilson. Probably I would be more excited too, if I finally properly played TOGETHER with other people so I would notice what other characters too....in fact one of the few characters I am super curious about gameplay changes wise is Wickerbottom, since I would LOVE to have a Wickerbottom around, simply for the character design and her voice. Plus I prefer Wickerbottom to use HER magic more and Maxwell to use HIS magic more, unless Wickerbottom actively "allows" him to use her stuff (kind of in the sense of: Maxwell should get a harsher "punishment" for "stealing" Wickerbottoms books ^^), so I'd rather have her get more exclusive gameplay for herself....which I am rather sure will happen in future :) )

most of the people i used to play with have quit. Many of them in the 3k+ hours. A game can't stay fun forever i guess.

By this time I think everyone thought we would be done with char reworks but boy were we wrong. Another 2 more years of char reworks and qol and hopefully we will finally be able to move on to more exciting things

:( I wonder why this off-topic was deleted. All I can think of was the fact what I OFTEN noticed in other fandom forums (granted I speak of my experience pre 2007) that often the off-topic forums were "taking over" up to the point that some people were only posting inside the off-topic threads.

I assume the reason why that got deleted because discord toke its place, so most people just go there now.

True, and that’s pretty much anything in life. Holidays? “Meh I’d just rather work” Outside? “Meh the weathers too bad” Friends? “They’re probably super cringe” Childhood memories? “Meh it was too bad” Some awesome survival game? “OOOOH NOOOO THE UPDATES SUCK KLEI ADDING SOME OTTERS AND SOME MORE ADVANCED CHARATCER SKILLS IS TOO LITTLE”

Let me put it in a way that hopefully anyone can understand- let’s look at it as being similar to world wide popular franchises like Mario or Sonic.

Mario has been around since well since before I was Born.. lol and Sonic he’s been around for awhile too but over the many many many many MANY years that these franchises have existed they have made many many many different Games, across many different gaming Genres.

Mario for example has Classic side scrolling level platforming Mario with Super Mario Bros 3, then it has Super Mario 64 which was a 3D Platformer, then it has Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Doctor Mario, Mario Party.. And also Lugi’s Mansion etc etc…

The point is people like the FRANCHISE and the CHARACTERS.. but you can’t realistically expect someone who plays Mario Kart to also expect them to add Mario Kart power ups to Super Mario Bros Wonder..

And believe it or not DST has been around for nearly TEN YEARS..

Do you know what 10 years does???

(Aside from turn me into an Old Fart..)

Ten Years is GTA 4 to GTA V & soon to be GTA V to GTA 6…

Ten Years is Batman Arkham Asylum to Batman Arkham Knight..

The point is games adapt, change and evolve over long periods of time.

And to tell you the honest Truth if Klei announced TOMORROW that they were making a Dont Starve RogueLite (with silly standard RogueLite features such as opening a treasure box and getting a boom or a curse or transforming into a random character from the franchise etc..) I would buy that game DAY ONE no questions asked… and i would likely stop playing DST all together.

Because it’s not necessarily the “Game” that I’m in love with, it’s the “Franchise” the cast of Characters, the wacky worlds and environments etc…

And Klei has that with DST.

Minecraft.. Minecraft has regular Minecrafr, Minecraft Stories (which failed) Minecraft Legends (also failed) Minecraft Dungeons (??) but each one offers a different style of gameplay while still enjoying the mobs and characters that put the franchise on the map.

DSTs actual problem is that it’s TEN YEARS OLD- People need Mario levels of Variety by now….

And I think that’s starting to show when fans can’t make up their minds if they love or hate the updates Klei put out.

I don't usually see much hate about this game is more like concerning.

Even if I don’t agree most of the times with these group of people mostly because how toxic they can be on the forums, I kind of understand the negativity around certain updates and I want to believe most of the hate is because these people care about this game but they don’t know how to properly communicate without falling into hate and toxicity.

And yea we all can agree sometimes "not always" klei tend to add certain things that make no sense wasting time and resources like for example “Year of the Boat” not bad just doesn’t match with Dragonfly or how hard is to sustain wetness with wurt or the fact Wilson and Wormwood's Skill trees still need some buffs and other stuff like this food:

Spoiler

Stuffed_Night_Cap_Build.webp.9b9d22fb2ba6e09ea6a143f5297b803e.webp

At the end, this game is far from being bad but of course still need a lot of QoL and more quality over quantity, but with no doubt Klei is doing a pretty job in my opinion of course outside of the little things.

I disagree. Sequels should be reserved for changes that are big enough to actually warrant a new game. Multiplayer was a big enough change to warrant DST being a separate experience from solo DS. Adding <insert new boss here>, tweaking <insert characters here>, and changing <insert quality of life thing here> doesn't require a new game (and if you try to make a sequel out of something that doesn't deserve to be one, you get Overwatch 2).

Also, one of the things I love about this game is the sheer amount of variety it has. You have so many different options for so many things, especially how you sustain yourself. There's a ton of different playstyles and it's not even just limited to one per character. Skill trees (especially the ones that are done right) add even more options, like how you can now viably just use mushroom planters for enough veggies to feed a server as Wormwood instead of farming if you want.

THANKS now I want to open a chest as Mighty Wolfgang and turn into Wes! IMMEDIATELY! (that would encourage me to play with EVERY character, not just my favourit, exactly like I do in games like Binding of Isaac in which I feel I have fun no matter with what set I start ^^

I mean the potential for it is right there staring anyone in the face who looks hard enough for it.. they have these underground maze labyrinths (I believe the experts calls this ruins rushing?) these mazes have loot boxes, these loot boxes often contain weapons and other useful items..

But the franchise also has (to a very limited and almost unnoticeable degree..) cursed chests- This would be that one you open that sets on fire or the one that drops a poof of green dusty smoke making the food items in your inventory rot faster.

Klei has this already in the game and all it would take is a few DST developers to play games like “Trinity Fusion, or Soul Knight or Dungeon Slasher” and then they’ll be like- You know what… I want to create that kind of experience in DST, let me see what all I already have to work with before I add new stuff..

And then they realize things like dying on wilderness mode and picking a random survivor to respawn as Is basically opening that chest and Boom Wolfgang is now Wes for a bit.. or they see things like, opening that loot chest rots your perishables and then they get this evil troll grin… :wilson_evil:

Thats when and how the DS franchise gets an actual RogueLite spin-off, and I for one hope to be here on these forums when that product gets officially created.. cause I want to see that magic happen.

DST is great and all, but unless they add this in as like a paid DLC mode for DST….  I’m already looking way past DST.

labyrinth chests can also trigger traps e.g. changing your sanity or hunger or durability or spoilage of an item in your inventory or spawning a spider or multiple

usually I am suspicious about spin-offs but this one I would celebrate >:3

[GRANTED: ALL CHARACTERS and by that I also mean those from single player, should be part of the "pool". If they happen to make an entire new cast, I'm out. I seriously can't stand characters being "new" and "next generation" in spin-offs. But in the case of Klei, I have hope they wouldn't go that way.]

i love this game, but certain things in this game are so close to being good but still falls short of it (imo ocean mobs rlly should be balanced better for a better ocean experience, as well as more important to the cave areas that arent just archives/ruins), so i like to put out criticisms to hopefully reach the devs. ofc on forums negativity breeds from itself, positivity doesnt strive here

complaining about imaginary people again

No one cares that much about the game to come here and argue with people who make 3 topics a day to show how much they hate everything despite being here, a forum about the game they hate, every day. It's also pretty weird to create a topic about everything being fine, yeah, nothing to be said, all good! So it's not something we'll see much of...

I think it seems that way since hate stings a lot more than support for a game. It only takes a few bad apples in a batch to sour the experience for everyone. Most people (heck, even on the forums) are neutral/supportive of the direction DST is taking and I don’t think its fair that the general opinion of the game should not be swayed on the minority that people are unhappy about it.

I myself love this game a ton, it’s by far my favorite game of all time. Of course, this doesn’t prevent it from being something I don’t enjoy sometimes. When that happens, I usually stop playing and play another game for the time being so I don’t risk getting too tired out from overplaying the same game too much. I find this works pretty effectively for my case.
