marshyds
Right now im playing winona and having trouble figuring out how useful the recipe scanner is for things that aren't the new items, so any pointers toward what i should scan early? Stuff i really agree with, but havent tested. - Fish food and other pearl exclusive stuff (Don't have to visit grandma anymore, you neglectful grandchild.) - Ruins chair (No danger in low sanity land, don't have to search for the lazy man) - Life giving amulet (If you dont feel like rushing a magic station, you can just use graves to make more life amulets early for whatever reason.) - Turf (Don't have to craft stuff at the raiser first, a post iridescent gem item.) - Bundling wrap FROM KLAUS. (An easier fight than bee queen, atleast early.) - The silly lil crank to repair W.O.B.O.T (even though you can just make winbots...) I feel like if the remote could scan ruins items or lunar crafting station stuff then it would be a godlike item... HeatAndRun
It's not early-game items, but try these. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/158261-what-items-is-the-recipe-scanner-good-for/#findComment-1735096 Share on other sites
ADM
I see it as a multiplayer thing. It's awesome to need 1 less blueprint on the server for every boss locked recipes, especially for early Bundle Wraps or Dreadstone Armors. This is so good that would make me wish she can give the scanner to another player to use instead as long as they use it quick. Frashaw27
-Life Giving Amulets found by digging up graves -Nightmare Fuel for the recipe as the way to craft it naturally is kinda of pain imo (this one also the most uneeded) -Pig and Bunnymen Houses -Most things from boons or doing the normal plays -Any turf, the most useful being Cobblestones -If you bring one/a few to the ruins you could get spears, log suits, football helmets, more realistically a bat bat -Nightmare Armor and Dark Sword from the Chess Pieces  That's about all I can think of. I think the recipe scanner is fairly useful but it does fall off as the time where you'd use it doesn't have too many options of worth to scan. And when there are good items to scan, your more then likely just have the things to make it with the standard crafting. Thus it mostly relies on how much you want to ***** making stuff on your own with things you just randomly get and things you get from boons. lowercase skye
You can scan Klaus's bundled supplies before opening them and you'll get the recipe for bundling wraps. Scanning a chair in the ruins also gives you a head start on Pearl's tasks without having to dip into dangerously low sanity to kill the sitting horror. Other than that i think the best suggestion of yours is the life amulet. Mike23Ua
It’s a mostly useless item that takes up inventory slots and doesn’t give the player even the vaguest of clues what it’s used for. The only known use that I’ve had for it so far is scanning the broken Wobot in the Scrapyard to unlock Winbot crafting recipe. Im not actually sure WHAT this items intended use is.. But sadly Winona’s entire skill tree is like that. What are scrap, and unstable doohickeys good for?!?! If you take the second skill you can create a teleporter pad and a teleportation umbrella by using the scanners on unknown parts that come from advanced caches. Gizmos are used to craft these advanced items. doohickeys are used for WINbot (3 each). Scrap is used to activate Celestial Champion and some post rift stuffs, as well as is an ingredient for WINbot (8 each). The scanner is useful in very niche scenarios outside of her 3 unique recipes, which is what this entire thread is about. Okay well see my Winona skill tree looks like THIS: And with THIS I can find the Caches with Wagstaffs head Helmet thing, but OUTSIDE of creating a WINbot with your skill tree set up like THIS you have no actual Day to Day use for Scrap, or Unstable Doohickeys. They aren’t even used for useful things like repairing a broken down catapult OR as Fuel to power the Cache locating helmet.. They kinda just go to ONE Teleportation Pad Perk that I don’t even have a skill point spec’d within?? However it’s still worthwhile to take up the helmet perk even without the heavily associated Teleporter Pad, for the Free Electrical Doodads. So... don't pick them up if you don't want additional WINbots, they disappear after a short period of time so no worries about the clutter. As for Scrap, you need 8 to summon the Celestial Champion. If you really dislike them and consider it clutter, throw them in the ocean. They sink. If it matters, this is my skill choices. (I detest the Celestial Portal, as you might know, so I don't care if I will likely never utilize 3 of these skills because it allows me to not use what I hate most about this game.) Hope that helps. Lastly, you can make multiple WINbots. so if you like automation, it's pretty nice. (Well the walls but they are walls so yknow.) You don't have to wear the helmet 24/7. Ugur01
If you are playing a character other than Winona. You can scan it to get the auto-mat-o-chanic recipe and use it to repair wobot. It can normally be obtained by opening lunar rifts. However, with the scan item, you can get the recipe early and switch to the character you want to play. cybers2001
Very useful early game for duping bundle wrap blueprint, napsack, dragonscale furnace, etc. Can use it on sea fishing rods and heavy-weight lures, as those are easy to obtain from sunken chests. If nothing else, start researching turfs with it. ShadowDuelist
I scanned while playing alone: - Life giving amulets - The Winbot - auto-mat-o-chanic since i got the item and not the blueprint - Pig houses and bunny houses - Cobblestone - Pearl’s heavy fish lure and some other fishing gear I found around. - The panflute - Ice staves found in the ruins and the batbat At the time I tried to scan Klaus’s bundled gifts it didn’t work, but maybe they changed that with the last patch. I got it from BQ shortly after klaus anyway. As others pointed out, depending on the setpieces you find around the world you could get a more interesting recipes, like moggles, miner’s hat, walking cane, boat parts you haven’t researched if you are still in the rowing phase, etc. For multiplayer you can know how to make anything another player has before you, which is amazing. BTW  @Mike23Ua you can skip the whole speedy catapults and replace them with just one point in barrage, if you keep activating it every 10 seconds, they shoot a lot faster than having the 3 points in speed and no barrage. Also the excess scrap can be used for scrap walls (they appear in the alchemy station, its not a special recipe) which are far stronger walls you can use, and are almost free to make for Winona. Skills that you won’t spec into, unless you can reliably obtain Pure Brilliance/Pure Horror. If there’s one thing I hate the MOST about Winona’s rework, it’s anything and everything to do with the PC friendly Remote targeting. Another thing I should mention from playing exclusively on lights out mode is that the Button to Disassamble Winonas Spotlights & the button to set fire to structures while holding a torch in hand are both assigned to the B Button. Yes I lit a Spotlight on fire trying to hold a torch and disassemble it. Ive learned to now just wear miners hats before disassembly but the point still makes itself clear- Klei does not Optimize DST with console players in mind. (ie shooting a marotter den that is in the way, shooting a spider den once from afar, etc) The barrage skill I do recommend though, (it lasts 20 seconds not 10) Idk how it works on consoles but it shouldn't be hard to use as you just click and click at least on PC.
