The original concept for Don't Starve?

Recommended Posts

I remember seeing the original concept was more like something you'd expect from a mobile game, where you had to run around and collect the things (things being food). There was a hunger bar at the top and you basically had to race against the clock to eat as much as you can before you run out of stuff and starve. The more hungry you were, the weaker you were. This was later changed into a survival game, with the original concept being used for old Wolfgang's perks (constantly eating, the higher your hunger the stronger you are)

That on the left of the thumbnail is what it woulda looked like.

Because Don't Starve was one of the few games that could actually run on the PC I played on a decade ago (wait... It's been a decade?) I managed to get ahold of some of the earlier builds.

All the biomes were islands connected to the main landmass via roads.

The tent was basically what is now the Celestial Portal instead of a stat restorer.

The science points system existed, and you could craft things by sacrificing items to your science machine.

Edit: lmao prettynuggets beat me to posting the video by seconds GGs

Let me add:

Wolfgang was simply Wilson with no beard before the Strange New Powers update. Also, Wendy's first iteration simply had Abigail spawn every full moon, kill everything, refuse to explain, and leave. Also, Willow had no lighter but lit fires on her feet right when the Grue hissed to attack (because we knew the Night Monster as a Grue and not Charlie yet.)

I heard it have settlement building element to it?

Taking into account for single player, Don't Starve had Hamlet as a DLC. In Hamlet, you start in an environment where within less than a day's travel, you could reach a pig city. Doing a few pre-requisite tasks, you could obtain items to allow you to build settlements of pigmen and have them pay you taxes.

I remember the science points ;; And I missed them for an eternity ;; [meanwhile I am kind of glad about the single player game as it is today]

When my best friend showed me this game I remember there ONLY was Wilson [AND MAXWELL SOUNDED LIKE DEEP VOICE WILSON WHICH IS WHY I HATED THIS GUY EACH TIME I HEARD HIM!!!] And I remember as soon as Wendy was introduced my friend NEVER touched Wilson again, only playing Wendy from them while my ears were like: How could you replace the PERFECT VOICE character with this girl?!?! [though I liked the original Abigail back then so much that for a moment I considered playing her, for the ghost only.] Also I remember how the strange new powers made me try out Wolfgang and how much fun I had with him....but then soon returned to Wilson simply because of WILSON was my first favourite character of the fandom and usually I stick to them for all eternity. And THEN the worst thing ever happened: I accidently got a spoiler that an adventure mode existed. So the next years I did nothing else then trying to find and survive adventure mode, of course with my beloved tiny magnificent beard man...unprepared for what was about to come. So I died and died and died and died, but at the same time I grew to adore this long guy who suddenly had a voice my ears adored even more then Wilson's more and more and decided that HE had the best character designs of them all. Plus the Villain, I always pick those with sinister character traits if I can. And then once again another friend who played the game spoiled me that this Maxwell would be at the end of this accursed [and fun] adventure mode. Obviously this is when my obsession kicked in so I KNEW I had to have Wilson meet Maxwell I knew I had to in every way. So if it hadn't been for this aspects I never would have known that mods for this game existed. So I tried to find everything I could that would help me to survive this game because I knew I would never be happy again if I didn't get Wilson to meet Maxwell face by face. And then.............as soon as I entered the last chapter of adventure mode and met THE "DEMON" I knew Maxwell would now have replaced poor Wilson as my favourite character. [RIP] Well...or more or less they exist side by side by then, though the Maxwell serves my obsession more while Wilson is still the best to play the single player with. [after all being greeted by tall Maxwell is now my favourite part of the whole game experience]

..........sorry I drifted off. Anyway the same way my friend chose her alignment to Wendy I have first chosen my alignment to Wilson and then Maxwell [or the Maxwelldoor] came along and changed my whole fandom experience forever.

....I didn't know who Charlie was until Maxwell reacted to the nightmonster with this name btw and I honestly thought the monster was some male shadow creature guard of royal Mawell [or "them"] who had betrayed him or something like this [I thought that was the thing I later learned was called nightstalker]

the original idea is like DS New Home, aka p2w mobile trash

I'm so glad it didn't happen because I honestly can't stand in-game-payment builder games at all

Which to me was exactly the right way to put village building / npc villagers / trading system etc. into the game. I'm so glad we got Hamlet and not the original pig village micro-payments game.

I remember hearing somewhere that don't starve have a stage where the game was a colony simulator survival game?

I think this is actually mentioned right here in the video above where they say you were supposed to feed the pigmen etc. not sure if this counts as "colonizing" the pigs.

The TL:DR- it was a Darker much more creepy survival game, look at concept arts for Pigmen and long pig and the giant rats etc…

I was about to return to DST once I left it because of Charlie when I heard there was the concept of long pig [Yes I often like some dark "realism"] in my games only to find it was removed at that time. [My disappointment was almost as large as when I first discovered early DST was suddenly having a florid poster and a Charlie Queen] <- [I love Charlie by now although I still consider her "too nice" of an NPC (if you ignore her nightmonster site)] I thought it was more or less sad that long pig was considered disturbing considering some of the also "disturbing" lore of the DS universe.
