Concept of Strident Gem Abilities

Recommended Posts

I did this before with an ice strident for the blue gem, but not the rest. It would be really cool to link crab king's gem powers into his strident. Inserting a gem into a strident gives it a new ability:

Blue Gem: Right click Creates a temporary ice boat.

Red Gem: Right click Creates a temporary healing aura that heals boats.

Purple Gem: Right click creates a temporary purple whirlpool that lasts 1 minute. Cast a 2nd one, and move your boat into it to teleport between the two.

Orange Gem: Right click to create a short lasting mini orange whirlpool that sucks in nearby items and puts them in your inventory.

Yellow Gem: I don't have a good idea for whats currently in the game, but if they add currents, this could be a way to make your own currents.

Green Gem: Creates a few seastacks. Casting it on top of a boat makes the seastack penetrate it,  immobilising the boat and creating leaks if removed. Monkey pirates will try to remove it.

Irridesent Gem: Casts a random amount of random existing gem spells. Not practical, mostly a funny chaos item.

I prefer a simple buff in durability to the trident and create another item based on gem configurations

Durability fixes little, the strident is already not bad to get. You can farm lots of horns with fish net farms, Wickerbottom, or passively in the ocean.

i feel like the abilities shouldnt be ocean related, how about more land stuff?

The strident is an ocean weapon dropped by an ocean boss made from ocean drops for ocean combat with ocean related abilities, only to be useful on the ocean never useful outside the ocean.

(No, making it land abilities makes no sense)

I agree. By the time you’re fighting crab king, it’s late game enough to the point that you will have already basically conquered the ocean by then. There’s nothing to use crab king drops on because chances are you’ll have done everything else ocean related, and there also just isn’t a whole lot of ocean content to use it on in the first place. Meanwhile there’s countless stuff you’ll be doing on land post crab king.

The strident is a weapon made directly for the ocean. They should make a new item for that instead.

Let me give you guys the best of both world, give strident ability to turn land into ocean and vice-versa. There. A land content that also an ocean content.

What kind of ocean would it make? Would it always be coastal?

hmm maybe just what ever ocean turf original in world map, with land turn will always be coastal, while deep ocean can be turn into island but when turned back it will always be deep ocean again.

Yeah only ocean spells limit the concept to being kinda **** in the end. I have to agree with the others

Why? The strident is an item for the ocean. It would make no sense to make staffs 2.0 and make it a land item instead for some reason.

The ocean barely has any cool stuff to do either way, all the effects that jakepeng came up with already basically have equivalents on land.

I don't think this is the best idea at all, I see people using the option to create land a lot more than creating ocean.

It's not a bad one though.

It up to people to use it how they want. I personally would use them to plant knobby tree inside land, as of right now it hard to find a world with good location to plant knobbly tree cover al your base.
And strident is not cheap. You either have to kill 3 gnarwail everytimes you want to use them, or use **** tons of con/decon to craft them. Depend on it's durability on creating land/ocean, making entire ocean into land would be a difficult thing to farm for.

Limiting the items usefulness to solely ocean content means its not getting used for 90% of the game. Im fine if it has usability in the ocean but im of the opinion that it needs to be useful on land too.

If it has no use on land, then once people finish doing the required ocean content, which is like 2 optional bosses that give boat stuff, and some biomes that are workable already without a new item, then people wont bother wanting to get more of it. At least if its useful on land, then people will return to the ocean to get ingredients to make more. You create a reason for people to want to return to the ocean and interact with some of its content, in order to continue using a cool ocean item.

Thats kinda why like, if they dont make big changes to it, it would at least be cool to cast geyser on land, to maybe make enemies wet. Would be fun on warley.

That “some reason” is that the strident is near-useless as an ocean item. It currently being an ocean item is not a good enough reason to force it to always be an ocean item and condemn it to worthlessness.

besides, buffing the strident wouldn’t make it “staff 2.0” there’s a lot of cool useful abilities you could give to the strident that wouldn’t just make it another staff.

That sounds like the ultimate griefer tool. One that is a pain to get, sure, but imagine a world that one determined troll decided to turn into only ocean.

Well i presume you would not be able to turn tiles that have unmovables pois on it into ocean

You cant place docks on objects, so the same would apply for turning land to ocean and vice versa, meaning the cheater would have to either demolish everything on land or grief the sea, meaning they'd already be caught beforehand.

Besides, it's a fitting reward, conquering both land and ocean. More useful than bumpers atleast, since crab king is one of the last bosses people typically fight on the ocean

Its totally fine being a niche item for the ocean. Trident's whole identity is ocean utility.

More of an issue of the ocean itself (which seems like won't be addressed in this 'ocean update'), I'll keep waiting for an actual good ocean update that isn't focused on a boss on things that truly don't fix anything.

No, it’s not. People complain about the strident being such a nothing reward all the time. It’s not totally fine being near-useless, especially considering it’s a late game boss drop. It needs a buff.
